An energo weapon is a melee weapon that uses energon to power a shaped energy field that significantly enhances the cutting and blunt-impact properties of the weapon. When the fuel cell is consumed, the weapon can still be used at its "normal" potency.<ref name="mtmte8_ebw">"Energon-based weaponry" from More Than Meets The Eye #8.</ref>
Blitzwing's electron scimitar operates on the same principle and is also energon-powered, but the mechanism differs.<ref name="mtmte8_ebw" />
Let's just face it: the Dinobots like to kill things. They like it a lot. And they like to get up close and personal when doing it. But there are times when teeth and tail just won't cut it. When that time comes, the Dinobots will typically use their energo-swords.
Except for Swoop, who uses a thermal sword. He likes to be different.

Ratbat led an ambush on both Fortress Maximus and Grimlock's respective Autobot contingents while Grimlock and Blaster dueled for leadership on Earth's moon. While the Decepticon forces overwhelmed the Autobots on the surface of the moon, the island base attacked the Autobots from above, protected by a force shield. However, Grimlock's energo-sword was able to cut through the force shield, allowing Blaster to shoot the island base with his electro-scrambler, forcing a Decepticon retreat. Totaled!

Later, Grimlock fought off some Demons with his energo-sword after becoming an Action Master. Much fun was had. Except for the Demons. Still Life!

[edit]Apparently, Snarl's energo-sword can fire energy blasts. He did this when the Constructicons attacked the Autobots' base in an attempt to destroy Teletraan I. Heavy Metal War Later, after going to Dinobot Island, Snarl used the energo-sword for shooting at rocks during target practice. He needs to work on his aim. [edit]Energon-based weapons, or "energo-weapons", were powered by an Energon fuel cell that allowed the weapon to project an energy field around itself, increasing its combat effectiveness. Examples included Grimlock's energo-sword and Blitzwing's electron scimitar. More than Meets the Eye Energon-based weaponry profile

Grimlock shoved his energo-sword into Optimus Prime's hands, telling Prime to prove himself by killing Megatron, or Grimlock would kill him. The War Within #5 Optimus Prime used the weapon to beat Megatron senseless, but spared his life and left the energo-sword behind. Since Prime wasn't immediately slagged, it appears that Grimlock didn't really care. The War Within #6

The Dinobots gifted Grimlock with an energo-sword at one point, which they all signed their names on. Grimlock misplaced it on Earth and upon a return trip to the planet with the Scavengers, wandered away in his addled state of mind to recover it. His buddy Misfire chased after him and was thrilled to see Grimlock recognize and reclaim a piece of his former life. Nothing Will Ever Be the Same Again!
Beast Wars: Uprising
[edit]Energo-swords were a Builder weapon, and official contraband in the age of the Pax Cybertronia, though this was usually a moot point since most proto-formers were incapable of lifting them at all. During a MCSF raid, the cops were surprised to find their target, Sledgehammer had sampled some of his own Nucleon supply when he grabbed an energo-sword he'd been smuggling, the power boost enabling him to wield it with no difficulty. During the fight, he sliced off officer Wolfang's leg before fleeing into the night. Burning Bridges

Notes
[edit]- The Dreamwave More than Meets the Eye profile series was very liberal in its inclusion of energo-weapons, giving them to many characters who had not previously been associated with them with perhaps the most egregious example being Predaking's profile, which states that he is armed with an energo-sword despite Razorclaw's profile describing the same weapon as a sonic sword just two pages earlier. Generic energo-swords (or "energo-blades", as the series appears to use the two terms interchangeably) also replaced Barrage's electro-sword and Menasor's ionizer sword, while Blaze Master's helicopter blades, Bomb-Burst's battle axe, and Pounce's bayonets were all described as being energo-weapons for the first time.
