Autobots, Decepticons, and ponies unite to save Cybertron—but can the power of friendship overcome King Sombra's ultimate weapon?
Synopsis
[edit]In a desolate, long-abandoned region of Cybertron, King Sombra's brainwashed minions have begun a large-scale excavation effort to reach something buried deep within the planet's metal strata. Spying on the group from a nearby ridge, Optimus Prime contacts the main Autobot force that they'll need reinforcements as soon as possible. Unfortunately, they won't get those reinforcements until Ratchet and Wheeljack are finished with their secret weapon; Optimus insists that they need to stop Sombra now, however, and so Prime orders the Autobots under his command to charge into battle!
As Trailbreaker shields their advance, Optimus orders Mirage to keep Sombra off-balance so that he can't use his magic against them. But as Bumblebee contends with Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie, Elita-1 realizes where they are and why Optimus rushed them into combat; as Sombra evades Mirage and races down into the depths of Cybertron to claim his prize, Elita explains that a Titan sleeps under the plain, deliberately sealed away to keep him from ever reawakening. At that moment, however, Sombra bursts free from the ground, having transferred his essence into this new vessel—Scorponok! Once he's harnessed the Titan's power to amplify his own magic power, "King Sombranok" will put Optimus and the others under his control with a powerful magic spell, then raise an army powerful enough to conquer two worlds. At that moment, however, Starscream cuts Sombra off as he arrives with the calvary: Autobots, Decepticons, and ponies ride into battle alongside Rarity, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash, clad in mechanical exo-suits!
Sombra orders his second wave of soldiers into action to buy the time while he charges up his next spell; however, the need to focus his magic means that his concentration's divided, and the heroes outmaneuver his clumsy attempts to capture them and put their own plan into play. As Rarity and Shockwave work together to free Pinkie and Fluttershy, Rarity explains that while Sombra mindlessly plundered Cybertron without ever trying to understand its inhabitants, she and her friends have learned to work with the Transformers, and have found new ways to combine their strengths, including the power of transformation! Using their modified exo-suits, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and Spike all become weapons for their Transformer allies, capable of magically channeling the emotions of their wielders into their targets to break Sombra's spell. In this way do the Cybertronians turn the tide; Spike saves Bumblebee from Huffer and Warpath just by encouraging the yellow Autobot to remember who his attackers truly are, Arcee and Applejack take out Doublecross, and Rarity and Shockwave rescue Twilight. As Optimus takes on Megatron, however, Starscream cuts in with Rainbow Dash, shouting that if anyone gets to fire on Megatron, it'll be him, and promptly swings Rainbow hard enough to instantly break Sombra's hold on Megatron!
As Ratchet and Wheeljack help Twilight, Fluttershy, and Pinkie into three extra suits of armor, Sombra finalizes his control over Scorponok, but still doesn't know how to trigger the Titan's onboard weapons. Outside, Megatron questions if something as abstract as "friendship" can truly defeat such a monster, but Optimus reminds the Decepticon leader that they were once allies. If the pair can fight side-by-side against a common foe after so many battles, perhaps there still is a path to reconciliation... and if friendship can over come eons of hatred, why couldn't it also stop a Titan? Ratchet, Shockwave, Arcee, and Starscream lay down cover fire with their pony partners as Optimus and Megatron—wielding Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie—charge down the middle, straight towards Scorponok's head. Twilight's own magic is able to overload Scorponok's systems, and with one broad slash from Optimus, the pair magically overload the Titan, who explodes in a burst of magical energy! With Sombra unconscious and the spell broken, Optimus turns his attention to the newly freed Decepticons and asks Megatron if they've just exchanged one threat for another. Megatron points out that a friend once told him that freedom is the right of all sentient beings; today, the Autobots fought for his freedom, and what kind of person would he be if he didn't return the favor? That clemency doesn't apply to Starscream, however; thanks to the empathetic pony magic, Megatron knows that Starscream tried to sneakly offline his leader under the pretense of "freeing" him. Megatron chases the Air Commander off, who howls that he'll get his revenge on Megatron and the ponies as he flees.
Some time later, the ponies have gathered at the space bridge portal to Equestria to take King Sombra back to their own world. Optimus points out that Twilight and her friends have foiled Megatron's mischief twice now, and the pony princess asks the Decepticon leader if he's learned his lesson. Megatron admits that he and his warriors seek order, and a force as unpredictable as magic cannot coexist with the Decepticon vision for Cybertron. Twilight suggests that the next time they cross paths, they should do so on purpose, as friends. Rainbow Dash suggests a competition, Frenzy enthuses at the idea of a swap meet, and Rarity ponders a potential cultural exchange; Megatron grudgingly concedes that if his fellow Cybertronians seek an alliance with Equestria, he will not stand in their way. It seems like a happy ending as the ponies dogpile Megatron with hugs, but neither of them are aware that a third party has been watching the goodbyes from afar. Somewhere, far away, a Quintesson considers the power and potential of the ponies, and eventually finds them "innocent"...

[edit]- Spike piloted a standard-model exo-suit in the final story of the first crossover. While that model was based on the bipedal, bubble-helmet version that appeared in the animated movie, these modified suits take pony physiology into account and resemble formfitting power armor instead.
- In "The Beauty of Cybertron", Rarity, Ratchet, and Knock Out discovered that they could break Sombra's spell by combining Equestrian magic with Cybertronian technology to transmit and amplify positive emotions and memories. That story ended with Ratchet and Rarity agreeing to tell Wheeljack of their discovery, and as a result the exo-suits in this story all possess a refined version of the technology that can free victims of Sombra's magic just by hitting or blasting them.
- Breakdown has rejoined the Decepticons after Rarity and Knock Out broke Sombra's hold over him in "The Beauty of Cybertron".
- The one-page epilogue is set at some point after "a few alt-mode joyrides and magic shows", just as the final scene of Friendship in Disguise! took place after a "delightful tea & energon party".
- While discussing their chaotic encounters with the Cybertronians, Twilight admits that "[their] villain started it" in reference to how Queen Chrysalis kicked off the plot of Friendship in Disguise! after her spell interfered with a Cybertronian spacebridge.
- Frenzy is the first Cybertronian to suggest a peaceful alliance with the ponies. As demonstrated in "The Magic of Cybertron", he's been a closet pony aficionado since his adventure with Fluttershy in "Pet Sounds".
Transformers references
[edit]- Like many modern depictions of the character, Scorponok is depicted as an ancient Titan. In this story, however, he's noted to have been deliberately buried and sealed underground after "the one who controlled him" went away; given the reveal on the final page, it's a sure bet that this "one" is a Quintesson—the War for Cybertron cartoon had previously implied a connection between Scorponok and the five-faced aliens.
- As Scorponok bursts from the ground, he's shown yanking himself free from multiple mechanical tendrils and cords; apparently, Titans in this universe can go "immersant" like in IDW's ongoing Transformers reboot.
- You'd be forgiven for thinking that the black-headed Transformer on four next to Afterburner is Red Alert—it's actually obscure Japanese character Clampdown! You can tell the two apart by the colour of their hood badges: Clampdown's is blue with red trim.
- As he faces off against the Sombra-controlled Megatron, Optimus gets as far as "this must be stopped, no matter the-" before Starscream cuts in, referencing their famous throwdown in the movie.
My Little Pony references
[edit]- Pinkie Pie's exosuit grants her the power to transform into a confetti, cupcake, and rubber chicken-blasting "party cannon", her go-to "weapon" of choice in the Friendship Is Magic cartoon.
Real-world references
[edit]- As the Cybertronians ride into battle, Octavia is shown riding atop Soundwave's alternate mode while playing a double-headed, flame-throwing cello, homaging the iconic guitar-playing guy from [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Mad Max: Fury Road|{{#if:||Mad Max: Fury Road}}]].
- As Megatron chases Starscream away, the Seeker swears that he'll get the ponies "and their little dragon too", paraphrasing the Wicked Witch's famous line from [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}The Wizard of Oz (1939 film)|{{#if:The Wizard of Oz|The Wizard of Oz|The Wizard of Oz (1939 film)}}]].
Errors
[edit]- On page three, "Equestria" is misspelled "Equstria".
- On page six, Refraktor's eyes are blue instead of red.
- On page seven, Shockwave states that "[he] attuned [the exo-suits] to ancient Titan's natural frequencies". There should have been a 'the' between 'to' and 'ancient'.
- We'll let it slide 'cause it's a funny joke, but it seems unlikely that the entire miniseries can take place in just twenty minutes—events like Applejack getting lost in the wasteland or Ratchet and Rarity going on a trip across Cybertron seem like they'd at least take a few hours.
Other trivia
[edit]- Although the final Quintesson cameo suggests that the creators left the door open for a potential third volume, this ultimately never came to pass. At the time of release, the My Little Pony franchise was in a state of flux as the decade-long Friendship is Magic era wound down in anticipation of a [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}My Little Pony: A New Generation|{{#if:new animated film|new animated film|My Little Pony: A New Generation}}]] that kickstarted "Generation 5" of the franchise in September 2021—around the same time, IDW ended their long-running My Little Pony ongoing in favour of new comics based on the New Generation movie. In 2022, IDW lost the Transformers license to Skybound Entertainment; in 2025, Hasbro and IDW permanently parted ways when BOOM! Studios acquired the My Little Pony license. Any future My Little Pony/Transformers comics would have to be jointly published by these two separate companies, so it's highly unlikely we'll ever see a continuation of the story.
