Continuity Energon Universe

As Major Bludd's machinations push Baroness and Cover Girl to their breaking point, secrets are uncovered by G.I. Joe and Cobra that could change things forever.

Synopsis

[edit]

After Cover Girl stabs Baroness, Major Bludd goads her on to rip out her eye, but Cover Girl refuses, telling Bludd to do it himself in an attempt to draw Bludd into the pit. However, he simply reminds her of his rules and that Raptor is currently lying in wait to take out the Cisarovnas. This is enough to motivate Baroness to comply and she attacks Cover Girl, yelling at her to fight back.

Back at the Pit, Clutch and Hound examine the weapons that Clutch recovered from Cobra, but find that the Energon powering them has been depleted. While they have other weapons recovered from M.A.R.S., Clutch worries that looking at those might draw too much attention, not yet wanting to reveal Hound's existence to Duke. He instead suggests that they return to “the scene of the crime” to look for more weapons. As they depart with Hound in Jeep mode, they are watched by Risk, who follows after them on a motorcycle.

While dining together, Astoria Carlton-Ritz asks Destro what troubles him. Destro reveals that he is growing increasingly concerned with the secrets Cobra Commander has kept from him. He decides now is the time to take action, venturing down into the Commander's restricted laboratory. There, he finds a series of tanks housing the vivisected remains of Cobra Troopers hooked up to some kind of machinery. Cobra Commander asks what he's doing there, but Destro fires back, demanding an explanation. The Commander offers to show him first hand…

As Baroness and Cover Girl continue to fight, Bludd monologues at them about how his injury has reawakened his true nature as a “renaissance man,” reciting a poem he wrote specifically for the Baroness. However, before he can finish it, Baroness yells at him to shut up as she appears to snap Cover Girl's neck. Bludd enters the pit to inspect her body himself, allowing Cover Girl to grab ahold of his leg and snap it. Flustered that he's been taken for a fool, Bludd warns them that if he doesn't check in, Raptor will still kill Baroness' parents. The girls decide to split up, with Cover Girl jumping out of the pit to stop Raptor while Baroness stays behind and begins a knife fight with Bludd.

Clutch and Hound arrive at the abandoned M.A.R.S. headquarters, hoping to find any remaining Energon weapons that might've been left behind. Clutch tells Hound to wait outside while he does some recon inside. As he makes his way into the facility, he is confronted by Risk, who believes that Cobra must have used the Brainwave Scanner to brainwash Clutch. However, before he can explain further, the Joes are found by Mercer and a band of Cobra Vipers. Mercer gloats about getting to kill the pair, not realizing that Hound is standing right behind the Vipers!

Quotes

[edit]

"Destro. You're not here with me. Where are you? What worries plague your thoughts?"
"What makes you think I worry, Astoria?"
"Call it woman's intuition."

Astoria Carlton-Ritz and Destro

"Y'know, when you tragically stole my eye, I thought my life was over. I was ruined. But then... in the darkness of my grieving... I uncovered something about myself. I'm more than a hired gun. I'm a renaissance man. A poet, if you will. And since I have an audience... allow me to read a passage I wrote especially for you."

Notes

[edit]

Continuity notes

[edit]
  • Clutch brought Cobra's Energon weapons back with him in issue #6.
  • Destro and Astoria's relationship began in the final pages of Destro #5.
  • Having already known about Duke's encounter with Starscream, Destro learned a bit about Cobra Commander's own experience with the Transformers at the end of issue #6.
  • The three-headed snake seen in Cobra Commander's lab comes from Cobra-La, and was first seen being used as part of his healing in Cobra Commander #1.
  • Baroness telling Bludd not to stop to pose calls back to Risk telling her the same thing in issue #8.
  • Clutch confirms that the events of issue #6 only happened “a few days ago.”

G.I. Joe references

[edit]
  • Astoria's dinner with Destro calls to mind many of Destro's dinners with the Baroness in previous Joe continuities, including IDW Publishing's Hasbro Universe and G.I. Joe: Renegades, further cementing Astoria's role as a Baroness stand-in.
  • Bludd's poem for the Baroness is quite terrible. The Major's poor wordsmithing has long been a recurring gag, dating back to his original file card.

Errors

[edit]
  • How are Clutch, Hound, and Risk able to so easily travel from the Pit to M.A.R.S. HQ? M.A.R.S. was established as being in (or at least near) Washington, D.C., while the Pit has consistently been drawn as being located somewhere in the deserts of the American southwest.

Other notes

[edit]
  • Energon Experience: Presented by Skybound Executive Editor Ben Abernathy
    • Character Spotlight: A brief overview of Clutch and his recent collusions with Hound.
    • Flashback Fun: Abernathy discusses how Mercer was first introduced in the original G.I. Joe: The Movie animated film as part of Sgt. Slaughter’s Renegades.
    • Creator Q&A: Ben asks colorist Lee Loughridge which member of G.I. Joe he'd like to be stuck on a desert island with. Loughridge answers Baroness. He thinks he could win her over.
