Synopsis

The Dreadnoks find Cobra Commander in a cave, now wielding Buzzer's chainsaw on his hand and holding its blade to his throat. Though the Dreadnoks are ready to finally kill the man they've been hunting, the Commander instead offers an alternative – join him. He knows the Dreadnoks only care about money and parties, and with the resources of Cobra, he can provide them with plenty of both. Zarana refuses to join Cobra, but the Commander isn't asking them to, suggesting instead that the Dreadnoks act as "independent contractors". And he already has their first assignment: kill G.I. Joe!

The Joes arrive to find this new alliance under way. Cobra Commander offers Duke a chance to leave now in return for saving his life, but Duke refuses, leading to an all-out brawl between the Joes and the Dreadnoks. However, they are clearly outnumbered and outmatched. Knowing there's only one thing that can turn the tide in their favor, Clutch apologizes to Duke before telling Hound to transform. The Dreadnoks, Joes, and Cobra Commander all stare in amazement as the Autobot stands up and easily swats aside numerous Dreadnoks. Cobra Commander orders the Dreadnoks to capture Hound, but Duke uses the distraction try and once more capture the Commander.

However, the opportunity is short-lived thanks to the arrival of Cobra helicopters, which open fire on Hound. Destro deploys the Cobra Valkyries to rescue the Commander, who brings Zarana, Zandar, Torch, Ripper, and Buzzer with him, leaving the rest of the Dreadnoks to deal with the Joes. As the helicopter begins to take off, Road Pig grabs onto the strut, not wanting to be left behind. Duke is forced to do little but watch as Cobra Commander gets away again. He then turns his attention to the Joes and the robot he didn't know they had. Clutch tries to explain, but Duke just decks him and grabs two rifles and aims them at Hound, demanding answers.

Back at the Pit, Colonel Hawk stumbles into his office, wounded in his side from one of Destro’s men. As he patches himself up, he gets a secure call on "z-channel" from his "baby sister." Said sister tells him to guess where she is; however, "Hawk" already knows that she's aboard a Cobra transport after her recent encounter with G.I. Joe. Zarana asks if he's going to end his charade and join them, but Zartan confirms he won't be. This has been his longest ruse yet, but the real war is just beginning. And it's a war that they will create.

  • So Duke finally discovers the truth about Hound! Needless to say, he’s still hung up on his less than positive experience with Starscream in Transformers #2, so he’s not taking it well.
  • The only Joe to not react with surprise at Hound’s transformation is Risk, who learned about Hound back in issue #10.
  • This is the first time we’ve seen the Cobra Valkyries since their debut in issue #2.
  • ZARTAN??? The evil master of disguise was first alluded to waaayy back in Cobra Commander #3 by Zandar and Zarana, who mentioned they had to be careful not to “blow his cover.” Just how long Zartan has been impersonating Colonel Hawk is unknown, but given that exchange and Zartan’s dialogue at the end of this issue, its likely that we’ve never actually seen the real Clayton Abernathy.

  • This isn’t the first time that Zartan has replaced Hawk. It was a plot point in the IDW continuity, as well as the basis of a “Zartan/Hawk Morphing Set” released at the 2004 G.I. Joe Convention.
