Your marine botanist parents have brought you along on one of their scientific investigations in the South Pacific. While they are busy studying the plants, you are free to explore the tropical paradise of Nali. Akura, the islander who looks after your parents' things when they are absent, has left to do some shopping, leaving you to your own devices.
You enjoy the warm sea, occasionally calling out to nearby fishermen. You swim out to a rocky point known as Rangda's Point, and swim beyond it, to a secluded cove you've been to before. Though you believed you would be able to enjoy some alone time in this hiding place, you are surprised to see a robot come out of a nearby cave, a fishing rod slung over one of its shoulders. page 8
The robot is just as surprised as you are to find someone else in this secluded spot. He asks you how you've discovered this location, and you inform him that you swam. Much to your amusement, the robot takes a moment to express his envy of humans and their ability to float, as he dreams one day to go surfing. page 12
The robot introduces himself as Beachcomber, and explains to you that he is a Transformer from Cybertron. Then, your hear the screech of a jet engine tearing through the sky. Beachcomber seems unusually shaken by the sound, and asks you if you are yourself frightened by it.
Tell Beachcomber you are also frightened by the sound?page 13
Tell Beachcomber you are unaffected by the sound?page 14
You tell Beachcomber you are also frightened by the sound of the jet engine.
You aren’t really scared, but you want to sympathize with your new robot friend. Beachcomber points out that you didn’t look very scared, and you insist that it’s a human trait to not show your fear. Beachcomber then explains what the sound was… page 15
Beachcomber explains that the sound was coming from Dirge, the evil Decepticon. Dirge has the ability to instil fear into the fuel pumps of his opponents with the sound of his jet engines. If Dirge is nearby, there is undoubtedly a Decepticon plot being carried out, and so Beachcomber must interfere before anyone is harmed.
Beachcomber’s first order of business is to locate Dirge’s base of operations. The two of you head inland, and reach a beach, spotting an islander some distance away. He appears to be frightened.
When the islander looks up and sees the pair of you, he cries in alarm and runs into the sea, dives in a swims away with determined strokes. You reason that seeing Beachcomber frightened him off. Which direction should you head towards now?
As you walk, you once more hear the rumbling of jet engines, and see Dirge flying overhead. Beachcomber flinches at the sound of the Decepticon’s fear-inducing engines, but manages to hold his composure. Nearby trees hide you from Dirge, and once he has flown off away from the island, Beachcomber addresses you. He believes that Dirge has his supplies and equipments on another island, and is flying them onto Bali as part of his plan. The both of you wonder at what Dirge might be up to, but Beachcomber is as dumbfounded as you are. page 26
As you continue exploring the beach, Beachcomber shares with you some of his hobbies, and bemoans that he is constantly drawn into battles with the Decepticons. The both of you come to a high cliff, marking the end of the beach. Beachcomber suggests going inland from this point on, as Dirge is unlikely to have made his hideout on the shoreline. As you walk away, Beachcomber accidentally springs a robot-trap. The tangle of cables ensnaring his ankle begin sending painful electric shocks throughout his body. Too weak to free himself, he yells at you to get back.
Grab the cables in an effort to free Beachcomber?page 45
Try to pull Beachcomber out of the snare of cables?page 46
Unfortunately, all this accomplishes is also making you a conduit for the thousands of volts of electricity coursing through the trap. You are not as tough as Beachcomber, and for you, this signifies…
Unfortunately, Beachcomber is made out of metal, and excellent conductor. The electricity sears through your body, and you pass out, never to awaken again.
Grabbing a sturdy piece of driftwood there, you rush back to Beachcomber’s side. You then use the piece of wood to push away the cables around Beachcomber’s ankle. While Beachcomber recovers, you locate the trap’s main mechanism, and smash it with a rock. page 48
Beachcomer thanks you for saving his life. Dirge must have planted the robot-trap, and it would certainly have gotten the better of Beachcomber if not for your intervention. Continuing inland, you approach the dusty slopes of the island’s volcano by mid-afternoon. You get the feeling that Dirge’s hideout is nearby. page 49
Beachcomber transforms into his beach buggy mode so that the both of you can quickly reach the volcano’s crater. Once at the crater’s lip, Beachcomber says that his sensors have detected Dirge’s equipment within the volcano. The Decepticon is drilling into the Earth’s crust, and could unleash a torrent of molten rock that could destroy the entire island. Does Beachcomber know you are immune to Dirge’s fear-inducing engines?
If you have informed Beachcomber of this fact, go topage 50
If you have not informed Beachcomber of this fact, go topage 51
Beachcomber recalls your immunity to Dirge’s fear-inducing engines.
He says that although he would not normally put a human in harm’s way, the situation is dire, and your immunity could be a valuable asset. He asks whether or not you are willing to enter the volcano’s crater with him. Though you are afraid, you believe it is too late to back out of this adventure, and agree to follow Beachcomber into the Decepticon’s hide-out. You soon find yourself before an open steel door amidst the volcano’s black ash, and step through the threshold. page 55
As you are walking down the winding corridor inside the dormant volcano, Beachcomber suddenly stops you. He points to an electronic jammer overhead. Beachcomber cannot venture any closer while the device is active, or else it will scramble his circuits. page 56
Though Dirge obviously expected interference from other robots, he didn’t expect a human to venture into his base. You step over to the jammer, and remove it from the corridor’s wall. Once the device is safely in your pocket, you give the OK to Beachcomber, and the two of you continue down the corridor. page 57
Beachcomber tells you his sensors are detecting activity nearby. But Beachcomber is unable to pinpoint the source of the activity, as though something invisible were following him. Then Beachcomber falls silent as you reach the nerve centre of Dirge’s underground lair. page 58
You and Beachcomber are up on a high walkway above Dirge’s control room. Dirge himself is too busy tending to various interments to have noticed you walking in. Beachcomber notices a large hangar door on the far side of the room, undoubtedly the alternate route through which Dirge has entered his base. Beachcomber’s attention then shifts to a large laser device attached to the walkway, the means through which Dirge is drilling into the Earth. Beachcomber explains that Dirge must be tapping into the Earth's core in order to power the Decepticons’ weapons.
Suggest to use the laser to fire upon Dirge from above?page 65
Wait for Dirge to leave before doing anything?page 59
You suggest to Beachcomber that he should use the laser to fire upon Dirge.
But Beachcomber refuses, explaining that using the laser might accidentally trigger a volcanic eruption. Beachcomber suggests instead to wait and figure out a peaceful solution to the situation. You disagree with the likelihood of such an event occurring, however, and slip past Beachcomber towards the laser. With the lives of thousands of islanders at stake, you decide now is the time for action, and fire the weapon at Dirge yourself before Beachcomber can stop you. Though you hit your target, you also accidentally strike some of Dirge’s nearby instruments. A chain reaction is triggered, causing the entire base, and all its occupant to be reduced to ash in a single titanic explosion.
You wait for Dirge to leave his post before you move into action.
Soon enough, Dirge steps away from his computers to collect more equipment. He presses a button to open the nearby hangar doors, transforms into jet mode and flies off. The doors close behind him automatically. You turn towards Beachcomber to suggest taking the opportunity to wreck some of the equipment, only to find your friend pointing the laser device directly towards you! Is he going to shoot you?
You stand perfectly still, knowing your friend would never do you any harm.
And you are right, as Beachcomber is in actuality aiming at a hideous gooey monster sneaking up behind you. One of the creature’s tentacles begin slithering onto your leg, making your skin crawl. Beachcomber then reduces the monster to a sticky yellow puddle with a blast from the laser. page 61
Beachcomber apologies for scaring you, explaining that he had spotted the monster while Dirge while still on the premises. Beachcomber couldn’t call out a warning to you without tipping off Dirge that you and Beachcomber were spying on him. He then explains that the monster was a Denebian Stalker, an alien creature Dirge must’ve brought to Earth as a pet. You realize that this creature was what Beachcomber’s sensors must’ve picked up earlier.
Suggest to Beachcomber that he now smashes the computer controls?page 66
Suggest to Beachcomber that you should hide the electronic jammer inside of Dirge’s laser and leave?page 64
You suggest to Beachcomber that he smash Dirge’s computer controls.
.Beachcomber starts by destroying the instrument panels, and works his way towards the drilling laser, which he reduces to wreckage last. The two of you then hurry out of the underground base, only to be intercepted by Dirge himself on your way out. Dirge threatens to terminate the both of you for your meddling, only for you to pull out the electronic jammer from your pocket. Pointing the device towards Dirge causes the Decepticon to immediately shudder and retreat a few feet into the air. You then tell Dirge to leave the island immediately, and that you’ll give the device to the island’s residents, so they will always have protection against the Decepticons should they attempt to return. Dirge concedes defeat and flies away. Proud of having thwarted Dirge, you invite Beachcomber to spend the rest of your holiday at your place while your parents are away. Beachcomber happily accepts.
You suggest to Beachcomber that you hide the electronic jammer inside of Dirge’s laser before leaving.
.You set the device to give Dirge a nasty shock the next time he attempts to use the device to drill into the Earth’s crust. You and Beachcomber leave the base just as the hangar doors begin to open once again, signalling Dirge’s return. As the two of you are heading down the volcano’s slopes, you hear a deafening explosion echo from underground, and the volcano begins to erupt. Beachcomber is able to drive you away to safety, but your sabotage has set off a chain reaction. Though Dirge plan has been stopped, the islanders will lose their crops to a cloud of volcanic ash. Still, better they lose their crops than their lives.
You dodge away from the laser Beachcomber is aiming towards you.
Unfortunately stepping right into the path of the carefully aimed laser; Beachcomber was not aiming at you, but something right behind where you once were standing. The last thing you hear is Beachcomber calling out your name, horrified that he has just accidentally shot his friend.
Pointing the device towards the laser disables it, and causes it to backfire onto Beachcomber. Beachcomber topples off of the walkway, only for you to realize too late that he was actually aiming the laser at a hideous alien monster behind you. As the monster begins to devour you, the best you can hope for is to give it indigestion.
Beachcomber is unaware of your immunity to Dirge’s fear-inducing engines.
He tells you to wait outside while he takes a look around and then come back for you. Before you can protest, Beachcomber goes over the crater’s lip, and disappears through the entrance to Dirge’s base. You wait anxiously for a few moments, and then hear the droning of Dirge’s engines coming this way. You spot Dirge heading back towards his hideout.
The imposing Decepticon takes on his robot form before stepping beyond the same entrance Beachcomber disappeared into. Large metal doors then close behind him, barring you from following. You wait for hours next to the doors to Dirge’s base, hoping that Beachcomber will emerge victorious over his opponent. You finally return home after sundown, without having seen your Autobot friend. Some dreadful fate must have befallen Beachcomber, and now no one will be able to stop Dirge and his evil plan.
You see no other way to warn Beachcomber of Dirge’s approach. You manage to remain unseen, and hurl yourself through the doorway before Dirge passes overhead. You hurry down the corridor within, and soon catch up to Beachcomber. page 55
You and Beachcomber make your way throw the thick undergrowth, far away from the inhabited areas of the island. Above the treetops, you can see the looming silhouette of Mount Dorong, the island’s "sacred" volcano. A catlike shape emerges from the trees, one that Beachcomber mistakes for someone called "Ravage" at first. It turns out to be a tawny leopard instead, one with a hungry gleam in its eyes.
The Leopard leaps forwards, but is met with Beachcomber’s metal chest. Beachcomber then pinches a nerve in the leopard’s chest, causing it to lose consciousness. While the leopard slumbers peacefully, Beachcomber explains that Dirge must have brought the creature to the island in order to terrify any islanders who might wander too closely to his base. You worry that you and Beachcomber might not stand a fighting chance against the bigger, much more powerful Decepticon. page 44
You continue towards the volcano, and reach its lower slopes by mid-afternoon. Suddenly, Dirge emerges from the cone of the volcano, and flies off towards the sea. Controlling the fear caused by the sound of his enemy's jets, Beachcomber pulls you behind a nearby rock. Dirge fails to notice the both of you page 49
Unfortunately, your quick movements draw the leopard’s attention, and it follows you up the tree. Beachcomber tries to catch it, but the leopard slips past him. You are about to meet an awful fate at the mercy of the leopard. For you, this is…
You tell Beachcomber to wait behind while you go talk to the islander.
But before you can ask the islander any questions, he begins to ramble off about a demon come down from the skies. He tells you the demon must be Adurga, the Winged Messenger of Sorrow. The islander laments that the gods are angry with them, and that there is nothing the mortals can do to avoid their fate.
After calming the islander down, you rejoin Beachcomber.
Beachcomber reasons that what the islander saw was no creature from myth, but rather the Decepticon Dirge. You pause for a moment to decide what to do next.
The islander tells you of how the demon "plunged through the skies like an arrow," and that he heard the monster’s evil laughter while it flew towards the volcano. He points you in the direction of the island’s volcano, several miles away. page 21
You explain to him that as much as you would like to help, you feel there is little a human child can do in a battle between two robots. Beachcomber agrees, and begins to climb up the cliffs. You wave and wish him luck as he clambers away, and return to your villa. You will never know what important part you might have had in this adventure…
You tell Beachcomber that you are unaffected by the sound.
You explain that there is nothing to be frightened of, as it is just the sound of a normal jet engine. But Beachcomber retorts that isn’t the case. He is amazed that you are unaffected by the sound, and concludes you are immune to it, just like some people are immune to chicken pox or metal fatigue. Beachcomber begins to elaborate on the jet’s subject… page 15
You make your way to the rice terraces, expecting to find the islanders hard at work there. Instead, they are all huddled together by one of irrigation ditches.
Though the islanders do not know much English, you are quick to understand that they are very frightened. Black, muddy water is pouring into the rice fields, polluting them. One of the islanders exclaims that the fire god is angry, and points towards the volcano. But your parents have told you that the volcano is inactive, and has not erupted for thousands of years. Then, there is a distant rumbling emanating from the volcano… page 9
The islanders are thrown into a panic over the rumblings. You still fail to understand why they are so scared; even if the volcano were to erupt, which you are certain it won’t, it is such a ways off that there is no immediate danger. But the islanders are adamant in their stance that all of these occurrences are bad omens. Knowing you cannot convince them otherwise, you return to the beach to take a swim. page 6
You ignore the islanders and head towards the beach.
As you slowly make your way towards the sea, you wonder to yourself what all the commotion was about. You look for a fisherman to give you a boat ride, but there are none in sight. Looks like you are going for a swim after all. page 6
You go to find an islander that will give you a boat ride.
Arriving on the beach, you are greeted by the friendly islanders. Many of them are either resting or hard at work, fixing their boats. It is not the time of day yet to go out fishing. You pay a young islander to take you out on his boat, and soon the both of you are sailing on the clear blue waters of the island’s bay. page 10
Your quiet boat ride is interrupted by the loud roar of a jet plane flying overhead. You find it strange that the jet is trailing thick black smoke as it passes, and watch as it circles the bay before heading towards the island. You do not recall Nali Island possessing an air strip, but when you turn to the islander to question him on the subject, he is quaking in fear… page 27
The islander explains the it was the noise that the jet plane made that shook him up so. You are confused, as you did not find the jet airplane’s roar to be any more frightening than any loud noise. Before you can push the subject, you spot a shiny blue and yellow hovercraft entering the bay from the open sea.
As it approaches, you notice that no one is steering the hovercraft. Nonetheless, it drifts in your direction and halts beside your little boat. The boatman with you is just as curious as you are with these strange goings-on. But are you sure you want to investigate further?
Tell the boatman to take you back to shore?page 37
You still wonder about the strange hovercraft when you return to the beach. The islanders, on the other hand, are talking excitedly about the jet plane you saw earlier. But you have difficulty with the islanders’ language, and can’t understand whatever stories they are trying to tell you. You figure the islanders must be excited because they have only seen airplanes up to this point. You decide to head inland and try to find the plane’s airstrip. page 2
You find the hovercraft completely deserted, prompting the boatman to question who was steering it. A clear mechanical voice answering that it was guiding the vessel. page 30
The voice introduces itself as "Seaspray." The image of a robot’s face appears on the computer console in front of you. Seaspray explains to you that he is the hovercraft you are standing upon. As a transformer, he can adopt the shape of Earth vehicles. But he can’t transform into his robot form now, or else he’d sink! Before you can say anything, the screech of jet engines roars overhead once more. Seaspray exclaims that the jet plane is "Dirge," and evil Decepticon that must be stopped. But Seaspray appears to be shaken with fear. A surface-to-air laser emerges out of Seaspray’s main hatch, but he seems unable to draw a bead on the approaching jet plane.
Go out on deck to position the laser yourself?page 32
Try to help by firing the laser from your current position?page 33
You go to the deck to position the laser yourself.
Though he is frightened, the boatman manages to get a hold of himself and follows you. You come to the realization that the jet’s engines emanate some sort of hypnotic sound that causes terror in everyone, save you, who are strangely immune to its effects. The jet begins to open fire open Seaspray. You aim the laser right at the incoming jet, and shout to Seaspray to fire. Seaspray complies, and a laser tears through the jet’s wing. The jet cries out in pain before spiralling back towards shore. Though it is trailing smoke, you failed to land a direct hit on the jet. page 38
Both the boatman and Seaspray recover from the jet engine’s hypnotic sound as it disappears from sight. Seaspray explains that the jet itself is another transformer, a Decepticon named Dirge. Seaspray had tracked the evil robot to this island, and believes he has set up base here. It is important that Seaspray locates on of his allies, the Autobot Beachcomber, who is vacationing nearby. When Seaspray explains that Beachcomber likes to be left alone, you can think of no better place on the island to find solitude other than a small secluded cove along the shore you know of.
Seaspray agrees that it sounds like a place where Beachcomber would go. You guide Seaspray towards to cove, and upon arrival Seaspray spots his friend. Beachcomber attempts to dismiss Seaspray at first, explaining that he is on holiday. But Seaspray explains that Dirge is on the island, necessitating Beachcomber to interrupt his holiday. Beachcomber grudgingly agrees to take on the mission to find Dirge. page 42
Seaspray introduces you to Beachcomber, explaining that you might be helpful in the fight against Dirge. Seaspray explains that his robot form isn’t mobile enough to go trudging through the island’s hills and islands, so it’s up to you and Beachcomber to weed out Dirge on your own. Beachcomber has some doubts about how useful you could be, but Seaspray explains you are immune to Dirge’s fear-inducing engines. Beachcomber is impressed. page 43
Seaspray wishes the two of you luck, and turns to return the boatman to the beach. You and Beachcomber set out on your adventure, and soon the two of you are walking through the trees that line the shore. You spot a frightened islander crouched on the beach.
Although you figure that Beachcomber is probably at the cove, you would rather not get involve with these strange alien robots. You suggest to Seaspray that he go look on Taulo Island, a few kilometres away. Seaspray returns you and the islander to the beach before setting out for Taulo Island. As he sets out to sea, you wonder if you made the right decision.
When you do, the hovercraft’s thrusters roar to life, and the hovercraft moves out of the way of two of the jet’s missiles moments before they crash into the water, where the hovercraft once was. You are shaken but unharmed. The plane turns away and returns to its base somewhere on the island. page 38
Unfortunately, all that happens is that you tune in on a radio signal being broadcast from the attacking jet. An evil voices cackles from the radio, and announces that "Fear is the element that unites all loser." before blowing Seaspray, you and the islander out of the water with its missiles.
When you move the joystick, the monitor in front of you changes its display from Seaspray’s terrified face to a computer display of the incoming jet. Crosshairs move across the screen as you operate the joystick. Realizing the controls are rather like an arcade game, you centre the jet into your sights and fire upon it. A laser shoots out from Seaspray’s cannon, and though it damages the jet, it remains airborne. The jet flies off towards the island. page 38
Ravage is mentioned but never appears in the story.
The portrayal of the islanders is somewhat less than politically correct—they are superstitious and believe Dirge to be Adurga, the Winged Messenger of Sorrow. Sample line of dialogue: "Fire god angry!"
