Kingbuster is a Laser Beast from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Kingbuster (キングバスター Kingubasutā) is a simple Laser Beast with a simple philosophy: attack. It's about all he's capable of, really. No fancy or even fundamental strategy, no guile, not even getting out of the way of enemy attacks. He's just a force of nature barreling ahead, an unstoppable brute ready to bite, smash, crush, stomp, and just generally beat ten kinds of hell out of any foe that gets in his field of vision and within arm's reach. This would probably not be a very good plan for staying alive, except Kingbuster is just that strong. He's more than capable of fighting his way out of a crowd through sheer bloody-minded rage and seemingly inexhaustible wells of strength and endurance.

His MVP Weapon, the Skull Beam Laser (スカルビームレーザー Sukaru Bīmu Rēzā), can instantly crack open a target's skull with a properly-charged headshot. While this can be a gruesome fate, it might be a less horrible way to go than him getting his claws on you.

Beastformers comic

[edit]

Kingbuster—or someone who looked like him—was one of the Laser Beasts who were unhappy with how their society was growing increasingly callous and machine-like, so he and the rest of Brown Lion's unit left their underground empire and traveled to the surface of Beast where they founded a new civilization that would become the Beastformers. Beastformers

[edit]
  • Beast Planet's Greatest Confrontation Set (Box set, 1988)
  • ID number: 102
  • Accessories: "Skull Beam Laser" MVP Weapon
Available only in the "Laser Beasts" part of Takara's post-Transformers "RPG"-themed Beastformers series, Kingbuster is an anthropomorphic Tyrannosaurus rex in high-tech blue armor. He has a transparent orb in his torso, revealing the elemental power of Fire, Water, or Wood held up with his back to a light source.
He was primarily available in the "Beast Planet's Greatest Confrontation Set" (ビースト星最大の対決セット Bīsuto-sei Saidai no Taiketsu Setto). This set also came with the Beastformers Platinum Tiger, Golder and Yellow Giraffe plus the Tiger Hunter vehicle (unchanged from their prior releases), and the Laser Beasts Skullgrotes, Salmomancer, and a chromed-gold Battle Drill.
This set is particularly expensive on the secondary market, given the entire Laser Beast half of the set is not available anywhere else... at least, not at normal retail....

  • Battle Drill (Contest prize Battlecruiser, 1988)
  • Accessories: "Skull Beam Laser" MVP Weapon
Kingbuster was also available as part of the top prize in two Beastformers "punch-box" giveaways in various stores. Basically, kids would punch through a paper front on a multi-compartment box, each containing a random Beastformers toy prize:
  • The first promo had 24 spaces, with a grand-prize exclusive-colors red Battle Drill with Kingbuster in one of them, two spaces with the normal colorless-clear Crystal Killer Fish figure, and then 21 random standard Beastformers boxed toys, with a small baggie of assorted Beastformers weapons taped to the top of their boxes.
  • The second punch-box promo had a blue Battle Drill and Kingbuster as the grand prize, two exclusive Crystal Killer Fish with mottled-brownish stripes, and 21 baggies of random Beastformers weapons, kind of a downgrade from the first one's normal prizes.
Naturally, these Drill variants don't come cheap, and this extremely-limited release doesn't make Kingbuster any less expensive to acquire.

Notes

[edit]
  • It is unknown what Kingbuster's Hasbro Battle Beasts name would have been. He was slated to be released in one of twelve "motorized vehicle" (aka Battlecruiser) sets. The Pre-Toy Fair 1988 catalogue shows him on the yellow sawshark-type vehicle, but it's entirely possible he would have come with a different one; this assortment never made it to packaging sample stage.
