An unorthodox combination of Cybertronian engineering and Starfleet technology proves key to the crew of the Enterprise and their Autobot allies as they fight to rescue the Klingon Empire from Decepticon conquest.
Synopsis
[edit]As the Enterprise and Fortress Tiberius hold position over Cygnus Seven, Captain Kirk debates some possible courses of action with Ratchet, Doctor McCoy, and acting-captain Spock over on the "real" Enterprise; though the Autobot medic worries that some of Fortress Maximus's old recklessness may be showing through when Kirk contemplates invading Kronos to rescue the Klingon Empire from Starscream, McCoy gruffly reminds the Autobot that Kirk is his patient.
In the Enterprise's main hangar bay, Optimus Prime, the other Autobots, and Scotty are having a similar debate, and when the ship's engineer worries that the beleaguered Enterprise might not be able to take much more—especially not to save the warlike Klingons—Prime points out that his species has no history with the aliens, and as leader of the Autobots it's his duty to protect them from Decepticons. From his position aboard Fortress Tiberius, Kirk points out that Optimus wouldn't stand a chance against the Decepticons in his wounded condition, though he sympathizes with the Autobot leader, and cites the Federation's Prime Directive as the Federation's own overruling law. Optimus announces that he and his Autobots follow "Prime's Directive..." whether by action or inaction, he will not allow Cybertronians to harm any civilization, even if this means going against his new allies.
On Kronos itself, Klingon Chancellor Gorkon and the Klingon High Council convene to discuss recent developments: namely, the baffling loss of contact with Kuri's Klingon detachment on Cygnus Seven, immediately followed by multiple unidentified vessels crossing the Neutral Zone that divides the Klingon Empire from the Federation. Believing the Federation to be at fault, the Klingon leader prepares for war... only for a massive explosion to rock the building and reveal the true culprit: a dilithium-powered Starscream! Believing victory to be at hand, the egotistical Air Commander quickly assembles a throne for himself out of rubble and declares himself "Emperor Starscream the First" as the shocked Klingons look on.
Even as Starscream runs amok, the two Enterprises streak towards Kronos as Kirk discusses their next course of action with Optimus. Kirk refuses to let Prime go it alone, but at the same time he can't risk the lives of his crew—especially not against foes as tough as the Decepticons. Prime sympathizes; making tough decisions, and having to live with the consequences of sticking with your principles, is part of the burden of leadership. Despite their differences, Prime's words strike a chord in Kirk... and when the Autobot commander wishes that he had "more than one" life to give, Kirk has a flash of inspiration and promptly orders Scotty to ready the ship's replicator.
Not far away, the would-be Emperor Starscream is having more than a little trouble getting the warlike Klingons to accept his terms of surrender; when one member of the Council refuses to stand down, the Seeker loses patience and blasts all but Gorkon aside. Before Starscream can convince the chancellor to give in, however, a hail of orbital fire rains down on the Klingon capitol. Starscream initially believes that the Autobots have followed him to Kronos, and makes ready to kill the defiant organics — only for the Klingons to regroup and pepper him with phaser fire. It's at that moment that Starscream realizes the truth of what's transpired: it's not the Autobots who have followed him here, but the Decepticons. Megatron easily swats Starscream aside and as the Decepticons touch down their leader claims Kronos as his own, announcing that the planet will form the seat of a new Decepticon Empire.
Megatron orders Soundwave and his cassettes to round up and enslave the Klingons in their own dilithium mines, but Megatron's dreams of conquest are cut short when Soundwave warns his leader that the Autobots and their allies have arrived to stop them. A repaired Optimus Prime and Fortress Tiberius leads the charge, with the other Autobots rolling out alongside their leader... but they're not the only robots on the battlefield: the crew of the Enterprise have joined the fight inside Autobot-sized battlesuits, fusions of Cybertronian and Starfleet technology!
Megatron gloats that Prime is too late; he believes that he has already won the allegiance of the aliens through his overwhelming power. Fortress Tiberius disagrees, however, and beams down Kuri and the other Klingons to explain Megatron's earlier betrayal at Cygnus Seven. Indeed, Kuri announces that the honorable Klingons will never join the treacherous Decepticons, and his words goad Megatron and the other Decepticons into attacking the three-way alliance. In the ensuing battle, Spock and Sulu deal with Acid Storm's corrosive powers before Windblade drives him off, Optimus and Megatron clash, Kuri battles Frenzy and Rumble, and M'Ress takes on Ravage and Laserbeak, all while Fortress Tiberius and Trypticon duke it out in another earthshaking battle.
The battle begins to turn in favor of the heroes, with Sulu putting his swordsmanship to work against Thrust and Dirge, but Megatron orders Soundwave to deploy his own secret weapon: a devastating sonic frequency that leaves the Autobots and their Starfleet allies utterly paralyzed. As Megatron taunts the defeated Kirk, announcing his plans to conquer Kronos and Earth, he's approached by Kuri. Megatron initially believes that the Klingon warrior seeks mercy, and grants him the chance to speak... but Kuri simply informs him that Soundwave's paralysis frequency has no effect on Klingon biology—and that Kirk had previously informed the Klingon commander how to calibrate their weapons so as to best damage Cybertronians. No sooner does Megatron realize he's been outplayed then does a fleet of warbirds uncloak, who promptly blast all of the Decepticons into submission. As the heroes stand triumphant, Kuri remarks that the Decepticons have underestimated them... for each of them—Starfleet, Autobot, or Klingon—is truly more than meets the eye.
Some time later, a tentative truce has been established between the Federation and the Klingons, one which leaves Megatron and the other Decepticons in Klingon custody. Not far away, Kirk and the other crew members of the Enterprise prepare to head back to Earth and say their goodbyes to Optimus and the other Autobots, who plan to continue travelling the universe aboard Fortress Tiberius, but pledge to assist the Federation if their services are ever needed. As the two starships part ways, Kirk puts a playful twist on Spock's old catchphrase as he bids their new friends farewell: "Live long... and roll out!"

[edit]- As with last issue, the state of Cybertron in this continuity is not immediately clear, though Megatron's suggestion of creating a new Decepticon Empire elsewhere in the galaxy certainly suggests that Cybertron is either no longer inhabitable or not reachable from within the Milky Way.
- Soundwave previously used a similar paralyzing blast in issue #1.
Transformers references
[edit]- Starscream sardonically notes that he's crushed multiple "High Councils;" this might be a reference to IDW's Megatron Origin comics, where that universe's version of Starscream was responsible for a terrorist attack on Cybertron's Senate.
- Megatron plans to rebuild Kronos into "New Kaon," capital of a new Decepticon Empire; this name was previously used in IDW's Transformers Animated comics as the capital planet of the Decepticon empire-in-exile, and the term was also reused in the Transformers: Prime cartoon as an alternate name for the Darkmount fortress.
- In his battle against our heroes, Acid Storm is seen deploying a green cloud of... well, acid, marking what is quite possibly the first time since 1984's "Divide and Conquer" that Acid Storm has actually been seen using the acid rain-creating powers that made his sole Generation 1 cartoon appearance so memorable.
- As is the case with basically every Transformers crossover ever, the "more than meets the eye" tagline is dropped. This is the second such occurrence in this series, with Kuri getting to deliver it this time.
Star Trek references
[edit]- The white-bearded Klingon seen on Kronos is not named in the issue itself, though Trek aficionados will recognize him as Chancellor Gorkon, who appeared in the sixth Star Trek film, The Undiscovered Country. In keeping with the aesthetic sensibilities of The Animated Series, however, he's been redesigned to resemble the Klingons from that show, dropping the ridged forehead that would become one of the hallmarks of the Klingons in The Next Generation and on.
- Soundwave sneakily namedrops the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Operation -- Annihilate!"
- Kuri takes on the Decepticons using one of the iconic bat'leth weapons.
- Sulu's incorporation of a built-in energy sword in his Cybertronian battlesuit references the character's history as an accomplished fencer.
- Several glommers, genetically-engineered Klingon creatures designed to prey on the infamous tribbles, can be seen in Megatron's cell.
Real-world references
[edit]- Prime's titular Directive: "by action or inaction, I shall allow Cybertronians to cause no harm to any civilization, no matter their relationship with my allies," is similar to [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Isaac Asimov|{{#if:||Isaac Asimov}}]]'s famous [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Three Laws of Robotics|{{#if:First Law of Robotics|First Law of Robotics|Three Laws of Robotics}}]]: "A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human to come to harm." Similarly, Prime's lament that he only has one life to lay down evokes Revolutionary War soldier [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Nathan Hale|{{#if:||Nathan Hale}}]]'s famous last words: "I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
Errors
[edit]- The two-page spread from pages 10–11 miscolours Sulu's yellow mech—recognizable by its swoop of hair—as Spock's blue mech.
- On page 19, Optimus Prime's dialogue reads "You offer is appreciated."
Other notes
[edit]- Originally solicited for the end of January, this issue arrives almost a month late after multiple delays, landing at the tail-end of February. Coincidentally, February 27 also marks the date of Leonard Nimoy's death in 2015.
- Star Trek vs. Transformers was originally slated to run for four issues; popular demand, however, allowed the creators to extend the miniseries by one issue. Keeping that in mind, it seems likely that the series would've originally ended with Trypticon's defeat on Cygnus Seven, with the Starscream and Kronos subplot coming in after writers John Barber and Mike Johnson received word of the comic's extension.
- The Cybertronian battlesuits that the Enterprise crew use transform into Class F Federation shuttles.The suits themselves don't seem based on any one particular Transformers character, though M'Ress's mech incorporates a version of Arcee's recognizable hairbun-like headgear.
- Kirk closes the series with a double reference, combining the traditional [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Vulcan salute|{{#if:||Vulcan salute}}]] with Optimus Prime's classic catchphrase.
