« 1982 »

The year 1982 (MCMLXXXII) predates the launch of the Transformers brand by two years.

For further information, see: Transformers timeline

Events

[edit]

Non-Fiction

[edit]
  • The inking team of Ian Akin and Brian Garvey see their first co-operative work published, the Marvel Comics title ROM Spaceknight.
  • Hasbro decides to drastically reduce the size of the G.I. Joe figures, broaden the cast, and commission the advertising agency Griffin Bacal and Marvel Comics to develop a brand-new universe for them to occupy. The resulting comic book and toyline is dubbed "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero".

March

[edit]
  • Two years after its launch, the Diaclone toyline starts introducing toys with alt modes based on realistic vehicles (see below).
  • The first two toys from Takara's Diaclone Car Robo line, No.1 Countach LP-500S Super Tuning (red version) and No.2 Onebox Cherry Vanette (black version), are released to stores in Japan. These toys' molds would later be used in Transformers as Sunstreaker and Ironhide, respectively.

April

[edit]

October

[edit]
  • October 3Super Dimension Fortress Macross debuts on Japanese television, featuring the transforming VF-1 Valkyrie fighter jet. This vehicle will go on to be less known in the West as the Transformer Jetfire. As a Transformers figure, the 1/55 toy from the associated toyline is distributed by Hasbro in North America and Europe, but not in Japan, where Takara rival Takatoku Toys is active and not yet defunct.

[edit]
  • Disguised as an F-15 Eagle fighter jet, Starscream was active on Earth, with documented sightings of jets sporting his unique colors on several continents before he was caught on camera transforming to robot mode in California. This sighting (and its subsequent leak) was the direct impetus for Hungry Dragon 1.
