Baldigus joins the war of combiners!

Synopsis

Part 1

Following their capture by the Dimensional Patrol, the Combatrons have been brought to Cybertron of the distant future, their home era, to stand trial before the Autobots, who identify them as a crew sent into Earth's past to find and reactivate Brave Maximus, only to crash, fall into stasis and be corrupted into evil beings by the Destrongers. The sentence to cleanse the panicked Combatrons of their corruption by reformatting them into blank protoforms is interrupted by Unicron, who offers the team freedom and power in exchange for serving him. Dolrailer is uncertain, having been waiting on Black Convoy to save them, but accepts after Unicron adds coffee milk to the offer.

Unicron transports the Combatrons to the Cybertron of 2021, reformats them into new bodies and orders them to conquer the planet for him, prompting Optimus Maximus and Megatronia to cease fighting and angering Galvatron who wants Cybertron for himself. As the Autobots race into battle, Prowl recognizes the Combatrons as enemies that targeted Brave Maximus when the Earthbound Autobot and Decepticon forces were incapacitated following the star gate battle, while Dolrailer looks forward to taking on the Car Robots of this era. The Combatrons outclass the Autobots, who fail to fight their fliers, scratch Dangar's cybertitanium armor, or sneak up the martial artist Greejeeber, while Dolrailer himself faces off against Optimus Prime. Prime calls him mad for siding with Unicron, but Dolrailer simply tells him that the Combatrons always complete the missions they've been given and that he's disappointed in Prime's strength compared to that of Fire Convoy. He decides to finish the Autobot leader off, only for none other than Roller to protect him from blast, having sided with the Autobots until he can talk out his differences with Prime.

Meanwhile, Trickdiamond and Thrust locate the Autobot factory for joint cube energon, which can turn Transformers into combiners, and feed piles of the stuff to Unicron. This allows Unicron to form his own combiner joint and Head On with Cybertron itself, turning the planet into his new body! Their mission completed, Dolrailer demands that he and his men are released from Unicron's service when suddenly his body starts disappearing. Unicron explains that he has deceived them: now that he has a body again, he will go on to destroy all Transformers and the future events leading to the Combatrons' creation will never take place, erasing them from history. Galvatron/Cyclonus attack Unicron only to be easily swept aside, the dark god having seen through their plan and no longer having any use for them, but their interruption allows Dolrailer to fight back. Yelling that he promised Black Convoy they would conquer the universe together and that he refuses to disappear until he's completed that mission, he combines with his troops into Baldigus and socks Unicron in the face.

As Cyclonus lies defeated, the immobile Galvatron curses that there's no point in having deceived him if he just gets stuck like this. When a curious Megaempress wonders what he means by deception, he reveals that he's not the Galvatron they all think he is, but Galvatron the City Commander... also known as Galvatron II! Meanwhile, Unicron calls upon a different servant to silence Baldigus—Grand Scourge, who shocks the Combatrons by claiming to be Black Convoy.

Part 2

"Black Convoy" explains that he's become Unicron's loyal Matrix Hunter and strikes Baldigus with his sword, putting the combiner back under Unicron's control and causing him to start disappearing again. Baldigus questions why he's not disappearing as well, given that he shares an origin with the Combatrons, suspicions that are soon confirmed when the real Black Convoy and Gelshark show up and blast the impostor. Grand Scourge becomes "Scourge Grand Prime" by forcing Trickdiamond and Thrust to combine with him and attacks Black Convoy, targeting his Energon Matrix, but ends up blown off a cliff by Baldigus's firepower.

Cracks then start appearing in space itself, Galvatron explaining that the dimensional borders are being weakened by the gathering of so many beings from different universes, himself included. He explains that after arriving in this world, he got fed up with being called a "second" Galvatron and traveled back in time to before the native Galvatron existed, becoming the commander of Trypticon. He was destroyed in a battle with Metroplex, but persisted as a ghost thanks to his ownership of the Creation Matrix. Galvatron's spirit abandons Cyclonus's body and targets Megaempress for possession, only to be grabbed by Grand Scourge, whose status as Matrix Hunter lets him manhandle anyone with a Matrix, even ghosts. Megaempress seizes the chance to knock both of them through one of the dimensional rifts to places unknown.

While the Autobots realize they must send everyone back to their proper times and dimensions to prevent the whole multiverse from being destroyed, Baldigus sets out to stop Unicron by detaching his head from Cybertron. Optimus Maximus comes to his aid and Vector Sigma repairs the Disaster Relief Team's combiner joints, allowing them to join in with Sky Reign's beast mode. Cyclonus convinces his own team to form Grand Galvatron once more in defense of their planet, and with Megatronia offering her strength as well, the Unite Warriors all stand together against Unicron. With their help, Baldigus is able to rip the chaos-bringer's head off the planet and toss it into space, where Megatronia destroys his combiner joint, but Optimus Maximus and Sky Reign are blown out of the sky before they can deliver the final blow. Roller comes to Optimus Prime's aid and forms Maximus's arm, allowing him to deliver a mighty punch that together with a barrage from the other combiners sends Unicron back to the Triple Z Point.

In the aftermath, Baldigus and Black Convoy travel to their future to free their leader, and Breakdown returns to his own dimension and to Knock Out. Megaempress and the 4 Guards continue plotting world conquest while Starscream flees somewhere far away from Lunaclub, and Thrust disappears, with Roller speculating that he, too, went to another dimension. Cyclonus sets out into space, planning to revive the Decepticons by becoming the new Galvatron. Roller himself has remembered that he's from this world to begin with, having been Optimus Prime's partner until he was lost in another dimension following Prime's first death, but his hopes to stay with Prime forever are dashed when Prime reveals his week-long lifespan. His seven days are spent creating happy memories with his friends, and once he passes away again, Roller takes on the duty of defending his body until a new power source even stronger than Vector Sigma can be discovered.

  • Though never really touched on in the cartoon, the Dimensional Patrol being from the future was mentioned in an early Car Robots catalog.
  • The Combatrons were last seen being taken to prison/trial by Brave Maximus in the Car Robots finale "Final Battle! Fire Convoy".
  • Their evil reprogramming at the command of Gigatron from "Foe? Friend!? Black Convoy" is recreated in the expository flashbacks.
  • Black Convoy has already escaped custody, as previously revealed in his Legends pack-in comic, in which he was also reunited with Gelshark.
  • Unicron's offer of coffee milk seems random, but Baldigus's original Car Robots bio card mentions his fondness of the stuff.

  • Grand Scourge is revealed to be a servant of Unicron, not an illogical connection for a Matrix Hunter. Whether this means that he is indeed the same individual as Armada Nemesis Prime, also Unicron-aligned and known in Japanese as "Scourge", remains ambiguous.
  • Vector Sigma mentions Sky Lynx helping him in the battle with Tornedron in "Call of the Primitives"—in Japan, the Oracle from that episode was retconned into being the past form of Vector Sigma.
  • Unicron swears that Cybertron will be his someday, which will come to pass in Beast Wars Neo.
  • Optimus Prime will be revived by a new power source, the Zodiac, in The Battlestars. Unfortunately Roller won't do his job very well, as these stories also feature Prime's body being stolen by Dark Nova.
