A large marketing push preceded the release of The Transformers: The Movie in UK cinemas on December 12, 1986. Much of it came via Marvel UK and its Transformers comic: the epic tie-in storyline "Target: 2006", posters and profiles of Ultra Magnus and Galvatron, full page adverts, a Winter Special, a poster competition, a review by Grimlock, an ad and a compo for the soundtrack album—and The Transformers Poster Magazine!
Contents
The Transformers Poster Magazine presented itself as a short booklet recounting the story of The Transformers: The Movie over seven pages. It is illustrated using screenshots from the film, and includes such plot spoilery details as the death of Optimus Prime, Megatron turning into Galvatron, and Hot Rod becoming the new Autobot leader. An editorial note tells readers to check out the comic adaptation for the full story.
The main selling point is that the magazine is printed on one side of a whopping piece of paper, allowing it to unfold–transform, if you will–into a replica of the movie's UK theatrical poster at approximately A1 size (841 x 594 mm)!
Notes
- This was editor Sheila Cranna's final work on the Transformers franchise, published shortly after the Transformers Annual 1986 and well after she'd left the Marvel UK Transformers comic to head up Doctor Who Magazine. Steve Cook had also been her designer at DWM.
- This is probably Marvel UK's only Transformers publication to date the events of The Transformers: The Movie to 2005—all other materials used the 2006 date given in earlier revisions of the movie script.
