Optimus Primal and his friends star in a movie about Convobat.

Synopsis

[edit]

After a day of being annoyed at his friends calling him "Yvonco", Optimus Primal awakens in the form of a gorilla robot, having contracted Transformers sickness again. His new appearance attracts the attention of Nightscream, who works a side job as a movie director and is looking for people to star in his newest work, Transformers: Convobat Amazon Showdown. He accepts and arrives at the set where he's greeted by Megatron, who will be playing the role of Megalligator. To Nightscream's annoyance, however, Megatron is quick to start ad-libbing lines and the other actors follow suit. Optimus Primal's big scene where he combines with Megatron goes awry when Megatron gets his head stuck, and then the living bat transtector borrowed from Mindwipe to serve as Convobat's body starts protesting. As Nightscream himself dons the Convobat costume and wrangles the transtector, Megatron convinces Primal to use his new body's firepower to help, combining with him again and blasting the bat into submission. Nightscream is able to transform the transtector and act as its head, completing Convobat, and eventually the movie is completed.

When Convobat is released, Hardhead and Highbrow watch it and ponder that if they exist as fictional characters in the Legends World, does that mean the story of Convobat and Megalligator portrays actual events happening in some other universe? Highbrow believes so, having realized that knowledge of their war somehow enters the minds of the Legends World's media creators, who make entertainment that in turn causes its consumers to produce the spirit energy that keeps the universe going. Hardhead wonders if this means Convobat might visit the Legends World someday, as meanwhile a portal opens in the sky and "Mindwipe's transtector" departs...

Transformers references

[edit]
  • "Yvonco" (イボンコ, "Convoy" read backwards in Japanese) is a joke name for Optimus Primal originally from the Japanese dub of the Beast Machines episode "Fallout". Several characters call out "Yvonco is flat!" (イボンコぺったんこ!) because of Primal's flattened body in that episode.
  • Nightscream saying "I'll kill you if you don’t appear in the movie" is a reference to his catchphrase "I'll kill you!" (コロス korosu) in the Japanese dub of Beast Machines.
  • The film covers the events of the Cybertron Convobat prequel comic. The scene watched by Hardhead and Highbrow shows that it's not fully accurate, however, as Megatron delivers the "My name is Megalligator!" line in a more playful manner than the comic.
  • Megatron and the rest are obsessed with ad libbing funny lines instead of following the script, a reference to the extremely jokey, ad libby nature of the Japanese Beast Wars cartoon (and many other Japanese Transformers dubs directed by Yoshikazu Iwanami).
  • Megalligator, played by Megatron, shouts "Shrimp fried rice!" (エビチャーハン) when announcing his name. This is a reference to the Beast Wars Metals final episode opening, where, during the voice cast chorus, Shigeru Chiba (Megatron's voice actor) doesn’t join in and instead wanders off on his own, muttering to himself while looking for shrimp fried rice.
  • Cheetor shouting "Home Reform!" (住宅リフォーム jūtaku rifōmu) during his transformation is a reference to the Japanese dub of Beast Machines, where he would often yell that phrase when transforming.
  • On the bottom left of the first page, Dinobot shouts "Misae!" (みさえ!). This is a reference to the Japanese-original Beast Wars Metals episode "Where Is the Banana?" In one scene, Megatron asks "What's Shin-chan’s mother’s name?" (しんちゃんのお母さんは?) and Dinobot replies "I know that! It's Misae!" (それは知ってるぞ!みさえだ~!)
  • In the same panel, Megatron shouting "G●co!" (グ●コ!) is a reference to a behind-the-scenes anecdote from the recording of Beast Wars; Shigeru Chiba once tried to ad lib a line where he shouted "Glico!" during recording. However, since Glico was not a sponsor of the show, the ad lib was not approved and ultimately wasn't used.
  • In the same panel, Silverbolt shouts "Erimomisaki" (襟裳岬) as he transforms. This is a reference to the Japanese dub of Beast Machines, where, in the final episode, he follows Cheetor and echoes the "Home Reform" transformation call.
  • In the same panel, Blackarachnia’s line "I like being on top" (上が好き) is a reference to a line with strong sexual innuendo from the the opening few minutes of Episode 20 in the Japanese dub of Beast Machines, where she is riding on a Cycle Drone.
