- Seaspray is an Autobot from the Generation 1 continuity family.
Earth's ocean: an immense and drastically variable desert made of water, which hides a menagerie of the largest, the smallest, and the strangest creatures on the planet. Sunk in its dark and trackless depths lie ancient and forgotten relics, mingled with the spoils and remains of Man. This ocean, this vast mystery, is Seaspray's element, and he loves it dearly.
The oceans of Earth are not alone in his affections. On any planet, at any time, Seaspray is a consummate sailor. Because he is not very comfortable on land, Seaspray does not do well in ground fighting. On the water, however, he has few equals.

Seaspray was first seen on Earth fighting pirates with Tracks and Cliffjumper when a time warp unleashed a ship full of them on the 20th century. After locating the vessel with his radar, Seaspray helped the other Autobots push the galleon back through the timewarp before it sealed up. Dinobot Island, Part 2
He was next seen helping Perceptor and Beachcomber on a geological survey near the coast. When Blitzwing and the Seekers staged a surprise attack, Seaspray engaged Ramjet in battle over open waters. Remarkably, the dim-witted Decepticon tried to ram the Autobot hovercraft and ended up splashing into the briny drink for his troubles. Seaspray got thrown for a loop when Ramjet eventually came back up for air, but still managed to shoot down the Conehead in the end. Thrust's discovery of a nearby electrum pool took away any chance of a fair fight, however, and so Seaspray and Perceptor were captured and taken back to the Decepticon undersea base.
After the entire Decepticon army coated themselves with electrum, Starscream forced the two Autobots to fight to the death for the amusement of his troops. They attempted to escape by blowing a hole in the outer hull, but were caught on the way out by Megatron, who was returning with a third prisoner, Beachcomber. The Autobot geologist later managed to disable their guards, and they shot their way to freedom through a porthole. Using Seaspray's back-mounted propellers, they sped their way to safety and joined up with the rest of the Autobots at the electrum pool. The Golden Lagoon
Working with the New York City police on their Crimebuster program, Seaspray had the unenviable task of patrolling the Hudson River and other waterways. He found nothing useful but sludge and grime. Make Tracks
Out waterskiing with Bumblebee one afternoon, the two Autobots stopped at dusk and Seaspray engaged in an old Earth superstition, wishing on the first star of the evening. He didn't tell Bumblebee what his wish was for, but moments later, they received a garbled distress signal from a distant planet. After conferring with Optimus Prime, they took Perceptor and Cosmos to investigate the signal, only to discover it had been sent by a Decepticon creation known as Deceptitran, requesting aid because his slaves were revolting. The Autobots quickly got involved with the local revolution, and "bubble-head" just as quickly fell head over heels for Alana, one of the human leaders of the rebellion. Thanks to the miraculous Well of Transformation used by her people, the Tlalakans, both Seaspray and Alana were able to experience life in the other's shoes, with him temporarily becoming (mostly) human and her changing into a robot. Deceptitran and his allies were defeated, and Seaspray proved that even a chunky robot with a throat full of mouthwash can find true love. Sea Change
In 2006, Seaspray joined Broadside on a search for Trypticon's remains, only to find the giant Decepticon city had not been permanently destroyed by Metroplex as they had believed. Seaspray picked up a trail, but must have lost it, because it ultimately took Perceptor's separate analysis to locate Trypticon in the Federated Democratic Republic...whatever of Carbombya. Seaspray was one of the Autobots stationed at Autobot City who rolled out to aid in the liberation of the Large Hadron Collider. Like everyone else he was likely exposed to forestonite gas during the battle with Clench's Decepticons. Generation 2: Redux
Marvel Comics continuity
Seaspray was a member of Perceptor's resistance cell on Cybertron. When their untrustworthy scout, Scrounge went missing, Seaspray and his peers fell in line with Blaster's plan to find him, overruling Perceptor. After learning Scrounge had been captured by Shrapnel, Blaster went alone to the smelting pool to save him, prompting Powerglide to follow and haul him out while Seaspray and three other distracted the Dectpticon guards. Although they were too late to save Scrounge, the cassette he handed Blaster gave Seaspray and the others the first good news they had heard in eons: evidence that Optimus Prime lived. The Smelting Pool! Later, he participated in the raid which destroyed Darkmount, and was transported to Earth via the Space Bridge with his six comrades. Here, they were greeted immediately by a group of humans. The Bridge to Nowhere!
However, the humans, belonging to the anti-robot attack team, RAAT, captured Seaspray and the others with the help of Circuit Breaker, who mounted their faces on their headquarters' wall. Aerialbots over America! Heavy Traffic! Disassembled, the Autobots were only released after Circuit Breaker was forced to elicit their aid to defeat the Battlechargers. Decepticon Graffiti!
Following Skids back to the Ark, Seaspray and the others got lost after their guide spontaneously vanished into limbo. Even worse was the reason for the disappearance—Galvatron had returned to the present. The crazed future Decepticon casually revealed that he knew Seaspray's name before cleaning his clock, then was forced into retreat by the vagrant Dinobots and Shockwave's troops. Fallen Angel Perceptor's team finally managed to reach the Ark, where they learned of Optimus Prime's apparent demise at the hands of the Predacons. Seaspray attended Prime's funeral and assimilated into Earth's depleted Autobot forces, though it was soon revealed that Prime's death was a ruse. Resurrection!
After the catastrophic Underbase Saga, Seaspray was aboard the Ark, still functional and helping to move damaged Autobots about. The Man in the Machine! He was later offlined somehow. The Greatest Gift of All!
The Battle for Planet Earth

After a hard day working to repair the Ark, Seaspray and the other Autobots were relaxing watching television when a news story came on revealing that the Decepticons were kidnapping humans. If Optimus Prime chose Mirage's plan to capture the four cerebro-shell-controlled Dinobots, Seaspray was stationed in the ocean just offshore from Bandit's Bluff, crewed by Ratchet, Sunstreaker, Huffer, Sideswipe, and Bumblebee. Once Mirage's hologram of Optimus Prime tricked them into charging over the cliff and into the sea, his passengers hauled the unconscious quartet aboard for safe transport back to the Ark.
In a different path, Bumblebee and Skids used Wheeljack's new mini-sub to investigate suspicious activity in Dolphin's Bay, requiring Seaspray to later provide aquatic support in four possible subsequent paths. In one, Skids chose to radio him for help when Bumblebee was stuck beneath huge broken columns of coral on the seafloor, which Seaspray carefully cut with his laser from the surface. He then tried to sail his two comrades back to the Ark, only to encounter Starscream as he rounded Sea Lion point. He was only able to fire off a single laser blast before a cluster-bomb blew him to smithereens, sinking any chance of the other Autobots learning about Operation Black Coral in time to stop the Decepticons.
Seaspray fared better if he showed up along with Ratchet in response to losing radio contact with the damaged sub, thanks to Frenzy's sonic attack. Sludge lifted the sunken sub off the ocean floor and onto his deck, where Ratchet was able to repair Skids, who then told them about Operation Black Coral, ensuring an Autobot assault would stop it.
If Skids returned to the Ark without getting the sub trashed, two possible outcomes saw Seaspray participate in a successful attack on the Decepticons' Mount Lomas base, alongside fellow seafarer Topspin. While he didn't do much beyond rendezvousing with Swoop if Prowl's plan was followed, Windcharger's plan saw Topspin take a missile from Skywarp, prompting a barrage of lasers and missiles from an enraged Seaspray. Dreamwave Generation One continuity
Seaspray was among the Autobots working for Smokescreen and Tracks in an insurgency group on Cybertron and helped with rising up and overthrowing Shockwave alongside Optimus Prime and the Ark's crew. Later, he was chosen to travel to Earth aboard the starship Orion under Bumblebee's command, only to run into the super-freak named Sunstorm. Night of the Combaticons The Autobots found themselves forced into a devil's deal with Starscream in order to protect the Decepticon leader from his crazed clone brother. He did lead them to the Earthbound Autobots he had already disposed of, but then Starscream turned on his Autobot handlers, disabling Seaspray and his fellow soldiers before making his getaway. The Omega Effect Ratchet quickly got them back online, though, and Seaspray began working on the construction of Autobot City. The Route of All Evil
IDW Generation 1 continuity
Seaspray was present during the battle for Sherma Bridge on Cybertron, during which both the Autobot and Decepticon troops stopped fighting to watch the first duel between Optimus Prime and Megatron. Chaos Theory Part 1
Seaspray joined the Autobot forces on Earth at some point after the Decepticon invasion was averted. He arrived alongside Jetfire and Windcharger. Seaspray was one of a number of Autobots commanded by Hound who arrived on a battlefield as reinforcements. By Land, Sea, or Air
Seaspray and Waverider were aiding in the evacuation of workers from an off-shore oil platform during a storm. When the Seacons attacked the station in order to steal its oil, the two Autobots were left to face them alone, the storm preventing them from calling for reinforcements. The two Autobot were able to defend the platform until the storm subsided and called for back-up, forcing the Seacons to flee. Deadly Depths

- Seaspray (Mini Vehicle, 1985)
- Japanese ID number: C-64
- Seaspray's Generation 1 figure stands three inches tall and is one of the smaller figures of the line. The figure has a simple color scheme consisting of blue arms and feet, a white chest, and yellow legs as well as head and propeller system. The figure's only real articulation is at the shoulders. Like all the Mini Vehicles, Seaspray is available in a variety of pack-in variations. He was available with or without a Mini-spy figure. The mold has the Takara and/or Hasbro copyright stamp on the bottom of the feet portion. Seaspray converts into a hovercraft with two propellers.
Generation 2
- Seaspray (Mini Vehicle, 1993)
- Seaspray's Generation 2 release used the same mold as the Generation 1 release, but with the dark blue replaced with a dark blue chrome. It is otherwise identical in mold and color.
- A rare variant exists that may have been a test shot run. These figures were apparently given out internally by Hasbro as Christmas ornaments, as they have been found bagged with a string attached and a card reading "Transformers Christmas ornament" on one side and "Merry Christmas from the Boys' Toys Marketing" on the other. The same treatment has been seen with a variant Generation 2 Beachcomber.
Notes
- Seaspray made an appearance in one of five original Generation 1 public service announcements, urging nautical children to wear life-preservers. After rescuing a boy from nearly drowning, Seaspray performs partial CPR to pump water out of his lungs, which somehow doesn't pulverize the tyke's rib cage. In this PSA, he was voiced by Wally Burr rather than Alan Oppenheimer, his usual voice actor. Amazingly, though, Burr managed to nail Oppenheimer's distinctive Seaspray voice.
- Speaking of Alan Oppenheimer, the voice he used for Seaspray was virtually the same as what he used for Mer-Man on the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon. According to Dan Gilvezan in his autobiography "Bumblebee and Me", Oppenheimer would achieve the Seaspray/Mer-Man voice by puffing out his lips and bouncing them up and down with his fingers while speaking. Gilvezan likened it to when an old Looney Tunes character would go insane and start boinging their lips. Needless to say, it constantly cracked up everyone in the recording studio.
- A reference to Seaspray is made in the video game based on the Michael Bay film. Various billboards advertise "Seaspray's Fish 'n' Chips". On the DS Versions, a boat in Tranquility is named U.S.S. Seaspray.
- Transformers 2010 Sea Spray is a bit of a continuity conundrum. He was apparently intended to be this Seaspray according to Hasbro Q&A at the time, but his bio and later fictional appearances suggest otherwise, portraying him alongside live-action film-style characters. As of November 2010 however, Hasbro confusingly maintains that he is NOT a movie-verse character, so... well you can decide for yourself if he really belongs here instead.
- Transformers Vault mistakenly calls him Sea Spray.
