The Cybertronian Omnifunctional Modular Battlefield Assault Tech System<ref>Toy Hype USA, 4 Oct 2018: "Hasbro NYCC 2018 – Transformers War For Cybertron: Seige Official Press Release & Event Coverage"</ref>—or the C.O.M.B.A.T. System for short—is a type of modular weapons technology purported to be the most advanced in the universe. Employed by the Transformers in the final days of their conflict on Cybertron, C.O.M.B.A.T. weapons can convert into alternate forms suited for different types of combat or combine to become bigger and stronger.
The system is perhaps most visible in the Weaponizers—sentient Cybertronians who can split apart into weapons for their comrades.

Toys
[edit]The Siege C.O.M.B.A.T. System is an expansion of the 5 mm post accessory system that has long been a feature of Transformers toys. And we mean a hefty expansion, rivaling even the rather expansive "Arms Micron" system. Every toy in the line has multiple ways of interacting and combining with others to create some very heavily-armed robots.
This system persisted throughout the War For Cybertron Trilogy lines with various permutations and numerous renames. It has also proven incredibly versatile and popular, and persisted well past the Trilogy series and into the following Generations lines functionally unchanged to this day (see "Legacy" below), having become a standard that is rarely even called out anymore, though one or two smaller features have been scaled back.
The names of the weapons and their official combinations were located in the instructions as well as promotional material prior to their release.

War for Cybertron: Siege
[edit]Battle Master
[edit]The Battle Masters, small Targetmaster-type figures, all have weapon alternate modes for larger figures to wield. Each one includes at least one "Fire Blast effect" piece, which can be placed onto other weapons included with other size classes, as well as hardpoints on the figures themselves to simulate muzzle flash, getting shot, rocket flames, etc, depending on the effect part. Each effect part has a 3 mm hole to attach to hardpoints, and many have 5 mm bases to fit into larger holes.

Micromaster
[edit]The Micromasters were primarily bundled in two-packs. Each one, aside from their normal vehicle mode, has a third "weapon" form for other toys to use; these modes are officially meant to form two-bot combination weapons, but many (particularly any "blaster"-form Micromasters) are just as viable a weapon on their own, as every one has a 5 mm attachment post somewhere. Like the Battle Masters, the Micromasters can also use Blast Effects on their gunbarrels.
This size class is also used for Soundwave's minions, who can turn into "Drone Armor" shields (cough) thanks to fold-out pegs, and can also be stored one at a time within compatible toys.

Deluxe Class
[edit]Standard toys in the Deluxe-and-above classes feature numerous 5 mm accessory-mounting points across their bodies, with the shoulders, forearms and soles of their feet being basically across-the-board locations, as well as on the top and sides of their vehicle modes. They also feature numerous shallow 3 mm posts at random points on their bodies for use with the Fire Blast effects, to simulate being shot, as well as posts at the ends of their gunbarrels for muzzle flash.
Some Deluxe Class figures are classified as "Deluxe Weaponizers," which can be disassembled into multiple mechanical chunks. Aside from this being how they transform between modes (the ultimate partsformer experience), it allows them to become weapons and armor for other toys (thus the foot-holes, so you can give them platform shoes, treads, wheeled bits, etc). While there are many official configurations and combinations, the versatility of the system allows you to build some truly grand monstrosities.
Most Weaponizers were released in the Siege toyline, with the prominent exception of Slammer who was released two whole modular systems later in Kingdom.

Legacy
[edit]The Generations toylines following Siege all feature some sort of successor to the modular-figure system:
- Earthrise 's A.I.R. Lock System: New-mold Battle Masters now transform into ramps and platforms to connect Deluxe Weaponizers (now named Modulators) to form Micromaster bases, much like the original Micromasters own bases-some of which have become sentient Modulators in this toyline. The Battle Masters also double as shields and the Modulators are also backwards compatible with this System's Weaponizers - one of the modulators was even retooled heavily to make the aforementioned Slammer!
- Kingdom 's F.O.S.S.I.L. Technology: The original character Fossilizers introduced here are basically the same as the Weaponizers. The big difference being they are 1) new characters and 2) skeletal beasts. However, there is also one mold at the Core class that only has a detachable tail, and transforms normally from beast to robot and back as opposed to partforming with no real combination potential.
- Legacy: Evolution 's Evo-Fusion: While the first year of Legacy didn't have anything similar to the system, its second-year subline imprint brought the concept back via a quartet of Junkions who can also be taken apart to gear up Transformers as their Evo-Fusion gimmick... but wait, there's more! Unlike the previous groups, they don't rely on partsforming to convert between modes. This line even has the first Voyager-sized toy to use the play pattern, Trashmaster.
- Legacy: United 's Armorizers: Succeeding the Junkions, these rocky creatures once again use the slight deviation on the Weaponizer play pattern the Junkions established, normal-transforming figures who can be disassembled to form armor and weapons for figures.
- Age of the Primes: While there is no new overarching play pattern to this line, it includes some Evolution Junkion redecos/retools, along with a few new figures not formally classed as Weaponizers but sharing the play pattern, such as Micronus Prime and Amalgamous Prime.
And as noted above, many of the features introduced in C.O.M.B.A.T. would continue on, though some only for a little while or in a reduced capacity:
- The Micromaster two-packs continued on into Earthrise, but no further. There have been scattered redecoes of the various molds, and the occasional new-mold pack-in, but the two-pack vehicle/weapon setup is largely done for.
- The "Drone Armor" toys quickly turned into the Earthen "cassette" forms they were blatantly meant to be come Earthrise, and continue to this day, albeit with pretty staggered releases, lacking the "shield" mode attachment posts on new-mold tapes... and questionable tape-reel placements. Several were sold by themselves in the Studio Series Core Class price-point (now defunct) with extra accessories to justify the pricing, while others came as pack-ins with larger figures.
- The Fire Blast effect gimmick has seen a considerably reduced presence following the end of the War for Cybertron Trilogy. The random-location "got shot" 3 mm posts are pretty much gone from larger toys, but most still have attachment posts at the end of their blaster accessories, plus the continued use of strategically-placed effect attachment points in, say, "fire"-breathing beast-mode mouths. Very few toys come with effect parts anymore, but there are still a few in special circumstances.
