Cryotek was once one of the Spectral Knights of Prysmos, where magic ruled over science, and a servant of the enigmatic wizard Merklynn. Following the destruction of Prysmos, Merklynn would recreate a fragment of their lost homeworld beneath the surface of Cybertron. Cryotek was one of the Prysmosians that took up residence in this New Prysmos; however, he refused to attend the Visionaries' debate over what to do about the Cybertronians controlling the planet, calling it "shameful". Schismatic
Following the breakdown of negotiations between the Prysmosians and Cybertronians that Virulina's murder of Kup provoked, Leoric and a small group of Spectral Knight loyalists fled the city to warn the Transformers of Virulina's plot to destroy their mechanical homeworld. Taking advantage of this "betrayal," Virulina pressured the remaining Knights into joining the Darkling Lords. Mortdred's whining caused him to realize that swearing fealty to Virulina was the only way forward.
When Leoric's loyalist Arzon returned to the city, Cryotek, now clad in Darkling Lord armor, confronted him; announcing that his new allegiance was a matter of survival, the two battled until Virulina arrived aboard the magically transformed Waspinator to take Arzon captive.Desperate Measures
Cryotek was assigned to guard Witterquick and Mortdred, Virulina's other two captives, taking over from the sadistic Reekon. Virulina then invited Cryotek to walk with her as she probed the depth of his new allegiances; her claims that he needed to show the killer instinct required to save his species goaded him into fighting with her. As they fought, Virulina revealed that she had learned a new spell from Merklynn which drained the life-forces of her victims, channeling it into the Talisman as the artifact burrowed its way towards the core of Cybertron. Virulina coldly informed her new ally that, as a test of his resolve, he would be responsible for using it on her prisoners.

Unable to bring himself to do so, Cryotek instead contacted Leoric to inform him of Virulina's new spell and the Talisman's acceleration. Good Men When Leoric arrived outside of New Prysmos, a repentant Cryotek helped smuggle him in. Gathering the knights who had defected, Cryotek and the others—with Leoric's blessings—rejoined the Spectral Knights. The Curtain
Notes
[edit]- Cryotek, of course, hails from the original 1980s Visionaries franchise from Hasbro. Prior to showing up in Transformers fiction himself, Cryotek lent his name to a Predacon from the 2001 Robots in Disguise franchise, as well as several alternate-continuity counterparts to that character.
