Allegiances within New Prysmos shift, and the Spectral Knights find themselves with a new ally who can help them strike back at Virulina.
Synopsis
[edit]Now appointed chancellor of New Prysmos, Virulina addresses the city's remaining Spectral Knights, informing them of the impending rebirth of their planet as the Talisman continues its approach toward Cybertron's core. With Leoric's group having "betrayed" them to work with the Autobots, she calls upon the rest of the Knights to side with her and ensure her vision for the future comes to pass. Feryl is unsure, but Cryotek believes they have little choice; pusillanimous Darkling Lord Mortdred disagrees, never having trusted Virulina, but his sniveling only serves to convince Cryotek that he's making the right choice. In front of the awed crowd, he kneels before Virulina and pledges his loyalty to her, calling on all the other Knights to do the same.
Convinced that his days are numbered under Virulina's rule, Mortrdred flees New Prysmos and seeks out Leoric's group. Though neither Ironhide nor any of the Spectral Knights trust him, they believe he is telling the truth when he explains that Virulina's hold on the city is tenuous—a situation Leoric realizes they can use to their advantage.
After fitting Breakdown with a replacement arm, Wheeljack continues studying the remains of his severed limb, analyzing the magical residue as best he can. Though he can make little sense of it, he is able to break it down into components that he can equate with scientific concepts: "system code" running on a "carrier wave" of gamma radiation. This allows him to rig up a reverse-frequency that cancels out the gamma radiation, thereby removing the carrier on which the "magic" travels, negating its effects. A test of this counter-wave successfully restores Breakdown's arm, and even though it proves only temporary, and the arm begins disintegrating again, it may hold the key to victory. He presents this discovery to the Visionaries and explains his plan to detonate a counter-wave bomb at the planet's core before the Talisman can reach it, which will inoculate it again the Talisman's effects. Despite Galadria's attempts to convince him otherwise, Arzon has nothing but doubts, expecting the Darkling Lords to stand in their way. Leoric has already formulated a plan of his own to prevent this; Arzon and Witterquick are going to sneak back into New Prysmos tunnels to assassinate Virulina!
Mortdred is charged with accompanying Arzon and Witterquick as they venture through a system of subterranean tunnels, approach New Prysmos from below the surface in order to get inside without being seen. The turncoat Darkling Lord is charged with using his tiny beetle totem to scout ahead unseen and determine the best point of entry for them, but true to form, he complains the whole way, regretting his decision to switch sides, only to quickly fall in line when Arzon aims a few threats in his direction. Assuming his beetle form, Mortdred proceeds to scamper his way through the pipes into Virulina's throne room in the Darkling Lord's monastery, and watches as the shackled Waspinator—the last remaining Cybertronian in the city—attempts to bargain for his life by offering to serve the new chancellor. It doesn't look like it's going to work... until Virulina reveals that she does have a use for Waspinator. On Prysmos, the Visionaries were able to reanimate vehicles with magic, and now, Virulina floods Waspinator's body with that magic, intending to turn him into her chariot!
Mortdred returns to Arzon and Witterquick and informs them of the safest way to enter, but both men are far from trusting and promise Mortdred that if he is lying, he will regret it. As it turns out, he is not; the group are able to enter the monastery without opposition. Once inside, Witterquick spots a young Darkling Lord approaching down a nearby hallway, but he is able to apply a burst of super-speed and catch them unawares, knocking them out. Unfortunately, it turns out that he has just kayoed their former Spectral Knight comrade Feryl—a revelation that causes Arzon's doubts to resurface, as he starts to blame Leoric for forcing them to abandon their friends, leaving them to fall to Virulina's side. Mortdred urges him to save such thoughts for later and to focus on their mission; Arzon agrees, and instructs Witterquick and Mortdred to secure the ground level of the monastery while he heads upward.
Scaling the monastery stairs, Arzon finds himself confronted by Cryotek, now also wearing the armor of the Darkling Lords. Arzon attempts to reason with him, but Cryotek has chosen survival over principles, and the pair fall to battle. Their fight is soon interrupted, however, by Virulina—with Mortdred at her side, and Witterquick held in the mandibles of the grotesque bio-mechanical beast into which Virulina has magically transformed Waspinator!

[edit]- Visible in the crowd of Visionaries that Virulina addresses at the start of the story is Craggor, an unproduced toy from the cancelled second year of the original Visionaries line. Perhaps the other members of the crowd are supposed to represent other cancelled characters, but it's largely impossible to tell; we can only identify Craggor because, unlike every other character in this series, armor colors notwithstanding, he actually looks like his classic self, with a thick auburn beard and hair and horned "tiara," and the design of his totem matches. - The golden statue beside Virulina as she gives her speech on page 2 is sculpted in the image of the departed Darkstorm's mollusk totem.
- Upon joining the Darkling Lords, Cryotek's armor adds red to its blue, making it resemble the character's classic armor color scheme.
- The ability to magically reanimate technology is a power from classic Visionaries media, but there, it was possessed only by the Visionaries who did not have Power Staffs (Ectar, Feryl, Reekon, and Mortrdredd); that is to say, the figure who came packaged with the toys of the vehicles in question.
Errors
[edit]- On page 1, it says: "Cybertron: the beating heart of a galaxy-spanning robotic civilization, million of years old..." It should be millions of years old.
- On both pages 2 and 3, Cravex is drawn as part of the crowd, his Phylot totem visible, but he's colored with blue Spectral Knight armor and white skin. That's an error on the face of it, but if this crowd is supposed to be all Spectral Knights, then he shouldn't be there at all!
- The caption naming Feryl is placed over Craggor, which is misleading at best.
Other trivia
[edit]- Backmatter for this issue includes two pages of character design artwork for Witterquick, Virulina, and Leroic. Witterquick appears with colors based on his original appearance in classic media, instead of the universal "Spectral Knights blue" they were changed to for the finished series.
