An oil rig is a human-constructed device and structure used to extract the liquid energy source known as oil from the Earth, often to be transported by pipelines or oil tankers. These structures can be placed on ground, or offshore in bodies of water, the latter known as oil platforms.

Human culture stipulates that hard hats are compulsory headwear when on or near oil rigs. Oil rigs often attract the attention of Decepticons for a variety of reasons.

Blackrock Enterprises was in possession of a high-tech oil rig placed off the coast of Oregon, which was assaulted by Shockwave, and later with assistance of some of the operational Decepticons under his command, capturing it to become a temporary Decepticon base of operations. Rumble, Frenzy, and Skywarp where seen repairing the facility while Shockwave returned to the Decepticon-occupied Ark . The Worse of Two Evils! The Keeler Oil Terminal was invaded by the Decepticon Pretenders but they were thwarted by their Autobot counterparts, who forced the Decepticons to disassemble their energy-converting transmuter before being returned to Cybertron for trial. The Chain Gang!
