The origins of Base Modes for Transformers date back to before it's birth with Takara's (now Takara Tomy) toy lines of Microman and Diaclone. Both of these toylines were centered about small roys (3.75-inch or about 10cm tall for the former)interacting with vehicles and bases that Microman rode in. Each product had a common joint with a diameter of 5mm, which allowed for rearrangement play, for example by attaching the vehicle's weapons to the base. This was a tradition that was passed down to subsequent Takara toys. After that, in 1980, "Diaclone" started with figures of Dianauts pilots (measuring about 1-inch or 3cm). It became possible to play with much larger-scale dioramas and robot transforming into vehicles and/or bases. From this, the subline of "Car Robots" were born as real-life transforming robots that Dianauts could ride in, which eventually developed into "Transformers."
"Scramble City" was introduced in 1986. Still pursuing ideas from "Diaclone", where the main focus was on giant robots that transforms into large bases/cities, Metroplex for the Autobots and Trypticon for the Decepticons. Furthermore, combined teams were introduced as toys to play with in conjunction with the city. They consisted of a team leader that transformed into a medium-sized vehicle and base, and small TFs that combined with the leader to become his limbs. The large cities can be connected to each medium base, allowing playability such as launching pads or repairing other small TFs.
Vehicle-type TFs were born in 1989 as Micromasters. The next year in Japan with "Transformers Zone" featuring them is a further development of the base toy concept. Its greatest feature is the common joint ladder that allows each base to be linked together, which gives it infinite expandability. Another feature is the inclusion of a cockpit where the TFs can get into robot mode, and the bases have been designed to better suit the TFs' perspective. The concept of Micro TF has developed differently in Japan and overseas, with large items such as Dia Atlas and Star Convoy that transform into bases and have electric gimmicks. Overseas, the Micromaster Combiner, which combines two figures to form one vehicle mode, released bases and vehicles that were not available in Japan. The concept of base toys was also inherited by the Action Master series, which reproduced G1 characters as non-transforming figures.
Over the next decade, playset featuring base modes would be a stample of Transformers toylines (such as Mini-cons & Cyberverse), but reserved for individuals sold at a higher price point
