After Shockwave is critically injured protecting Sephie, she looks for a way to defend herself against the Autobots.

Synopsis

The Decepticons put the finishing touches on a stellar spanner built within the volcano their ship crashed in, and use it to contact Cybertron. They're overjoyed to get in touch with Heatwave, whom they thought may have perished in the Autobots' spanner experiments. They transmit the spanner schematics across.

A week later, a spanner has been constructed on Cybertron. The Decepticons, Cliffjumper, Professor Arkeville, Will, and Rick are there to greet the new ambassador Shockwave to Earth, along with his aide, Fistfight. Some of the Decepticons are picked for a troop exchange with Cybertron, however when they try to use the spanner again, an overload shuts it down, and they will need to recalibrate it to try again.

Rick goes to talk to Sephie, who missed Shockwave's arrival, but she has news for him of her own—she's been offered a job by oil tycoon R.J. Blackrock. Sephie is not at her new job for long when she's called to Blackrock's office. Blackrock is looking forward to unveiling the company's new Mega-Rig next week, and wants Sephie to invite her Decepticon friends along in case the Autobots put in an appearance.

The Decepticons agree, and attend the unveiling, but Blackrock's speech is cut off by the arrival of a group of Autobots. The humans seek shelter, only to run into Seaspray. Seaspray recognizes Sephie and fires at her, but Shockwave protects the girl, taking the missile's impact. Shockwave is badly damaged, but not critically, and the Decepticons take him back to base for repairs. Sephie is particularly upset at his sacrifice. She makes contact with her mysterious Internet contact, Stormbringer99, who turns out to be Jetstorm. She meets him near Tucson, and he gives her a gift with which to "save her species".

Tailgate and his pet human Butch Witwicky are terrorizing the students of Franklin Burns High School when Sephie, now outfitted with golden electrical wiring covering her body, confronts them. Though Tailgate scoffs at the upstart human, Sephie is more than a match for him, blasting him until he retreats with Butch. The effort fries Sephie's wiring, and her clothing, but the grateful students lend her clothing. Grabbing Arkeville's cybernetic research, Sephie returns to Jetstorm and asks him for more help. Some time later, Sephie reveals her new upgrades to Rick and Will, who are duly horrified at her having replaced half her body with Cybertronian tech.

Elsewhere, Blackrock meets with Rodimus Prime and some other Autobots, and presents them with a gift of refined oil. Blackrock seeks weapons, which Goldbug regards as a bad idea, but Rodimus's interest is raised.

Sephie shows her enhancements to Starscream and Soundwave, who are just as worried as the others at what she's done. Starscream confines her to quarters until he and Arkeville can find some way to reverse the enhancements. She doesn't take it well. In her quarters, she's contacted on her oPhone by Blackrock, who claims the Autobots are forcing him to supply them with oil, and wants the Decepticons to arrange a trap. Sephie decides to go stop the Autobots herself. The Decepticons find out and prepare to go after her. Rick wants to go to, and Cliffjumper's talk of Nebulans gives them the idea to modify Fistfight into an exosuit for Rick.

Currently Sephie isn't in need of any help. Having downed Groove, she duplicates the abilities of his power chip rectifier and, introducing herself to Elita-One as "Emulator", uses Groove's fuel draining power and Tailgate's magnetic power to disable her too. Rick finds Sephie at Arizona Bay, looking to attack the Autobot base, and tries to talk her out of it. They're confronted by Rodimus, who distracts them while Wheeljack uses a microwave emitter to disable Sephie. Rick is blasted, and wakes up to see Wheeljack and Ratchet preparing to vivisect Sephie. Beachcomber detects a jamming field, which means the Decepticons are on their way.

Starscream's team arrives, but the Autobots have two hostages, not to mention a bunch of hidden Autobots who surprise and overwhelm the Decepticons. The prisoners are dutifully bound and a firing squad prepared, however Soundwave reveals he's not the one doing the jamming. As everyone looks up, a transport plane overhead drops off a massive robotic form—Blackrock in his huge Centurion mech. While Blackrock fights the Autobots, Soundwave uses high-frequency vibrations to free himself, however he's immediately incapacitated by Blackrock, who views both Autobot and Decepticon as potential technology goldmines. Rick, meanwhile, leaves Fistfight so he can help Sephie. Though Rick intends them to flee, Sephie wants to help stop the Autobots and Blackrock. She first frees Cliffjumper, knowing he's pragmatic enough to free the other Decepticons before going after her, and then attacks the Centurion. With casualties mounting in the Autobot ranks, Rodimus sounds a retreat and they flee. Sephie uses Groove's fuel evaporating powers on the Centurion, and Blackrock ejects as it begins to go critical. Sephie is forced to take the giant high into the air before it explodes. Sephie survives the explosion using Elita-One's time-bubble power, returning to earth where she's hugged by a relieved Rick. Starscream wants to turn Blackrock over to the authorities, but he points out that they've trespassed on his land and destroyed his machinery, so they're the ones in the wrong. Also, he fires Sephie.

The Decepticons return to base, where Shockwave is repaired enough to be up and about, thanks to some hints from scans Starscream took of Sephie's cybernetic systems. Starscream offers Sephie a place in the Decepticon team, but she turns him down, deciding to strike out on her own.

In the Autobot base, Rodimus gives a speech to his discouraged troops, announcing double energon rations, and promising pay bonuses for anyone who snuffs a Decepticon or obtains technology or oil. Morale rises.

Jetstorm helps Sephie replace her blood with mech fluid. Sephie is unsure what she'll do next, but Jetstorm says she'll be a great hero and end the Great War. Also, he asks if she got Soundwave's talent, as there's something he needs her to find...

In a darkened room, Jetstorm and Demolishor communicate by hologram with a third party. They discuss the success of the Transhuman project, and their manipulation of the two Cybertronian factions. The meeting is interrupted by Star Saber, who is shocked to find Side Burn talking to a Decepticon and whatever Jetstorm is. He blasts Side Burn... but only reveals the fact that Side Burn isn't Cybertronian. Side Burn grabs Star Saber by the neck and knocks the Autobot offline with a surge of electricity, before proclaiming that the Underbase will be whole once again.

Quotes

"Inverted vortex capacitor?"
"Inverted vortex capacitor operational!"
"Barium shield capacitors?"
"Barium shield capacitors operational!"
"Pipefor?"
"Pipefor... wait. What's a pipefor?"
"For blowin' exhaust, dude!"

Starscream and Soundwave perform last-minute checks on the Stellar Spanner.

"Huh. You talk exactly like you type."
"I do not type."

Sephie meets Jetstorm

"Butch, your temperature's going up. You want a new friend? I don't see its car... it's a stray! We can take it home and you can play together."

Tailgate

"Humanity plus, humanity squared, transhuman... They’re all accurate. I'm what humanity needs to be… the next step; a self-determined, self-defined, self-designed being. You can call me Emulator."

Sephie introduces herself to Elita-One.

"Whoah, whoah... Somebody's got manufacturer issues. Scrappin' me ain't gonna make daddy Starscream love you, little girl, or whatever it is you're after. Oh for the luvva... now the fat kid's got power armor? This is gettin' outta hand."

Rodimus prefers fleshies without add-on parts.

Notes

Continuity notes

  • The Decepticons obtained the stellar spanner plans from the Autobots in the previous prose story, "Blitzwing Bop", after Blitzwing downloaded the plans in an attempt to prevent Heatwave from being transported to Cybertron, which is where he is located in this story.
  • Shockwave was previously mentioned in the original "Shattered Glass" comic.
  • The idea that Shattered Glass Cybertronians are unfamiliar with Primus was introduced in the original "Shattered Glass" comic.
  • The prose notes that Primus manifested in front of the combined Autobot/Decepticon forces, including Cliffjumper, preparing them for battle with Unicron; this was seen in Marvel The Transformers issue #74. However, see “Errors”, below.
  • Blackrock’s company, Blackrock Petroleum and Energy Concern, was mentioned in "Blitzwing Bop", among the various transmissions Thunderwing picked up from Earth. There, it was called Blackrock Oil, which is presumably a short version of the full company name above.
  • Senator Shore was originally mentioned in "Blitzwing Bop". He mentions a war; "Eye in the Sky" established that in the 1980's, World War III occurred, with one of the combatants being the Inhumanoids. Later in the story, Sephie notes that despite the U.S. government claims, there is no radiation in the quarantine zone, and remembers her father's conspiracy theories about the government keeping people out, worried that their subterranean foes might return.
  • The Constructicons plan to bring, among other things, a fresh case of Diagnostic Drones; the original "Shattered Glass" story indicated they served as nurses to the Constructicons.
  • Sephie was shown to be in contact with Jetstorm/"Stombringer99" in "Blitzwing Bop".
  • Cliffjumper brings up the Nebulan and the various "Master" enhancements they went through when suggesting a suit of armor for Rick. He also notes that those Nebulans who joined the Autobots are unwelcome on their own home planet, as seen with Lug in "Cheap Shots".
  • Crasher brings up her Mayhem Suppression Squad training; she was seen as the leader of that group in "Dungeons & Dinobots".
  • Bonecrusher is mentioned, finally rounding out the Shattered Glass Constructicons, with Scrapper, Hook, and Long Haul having appeared in the original "Shattered Glass" comic, and Scavenger and Mixmaster in "Reunification: Part 6".
  • Blaster was trapped on the moon in "Bltizwing Bop" when attempting to use the stellar spanner to escape to Cybertron.
  • Alpha Trion has returned to his Cybertron from the TransTech version, as seen in "Reunification: Part 1". He and Rodimus were shown to be allied in "Reunification: Part 3".
  • Side Burn has always seemed off; Blurr noted that he didn’t "belong" with the Autobots in "Dungeons & Dinobots", and he showed a keen interest in humans in "Eye in the Sky". His self-repair abilities have been hinted at before; he was blown in half by Blitzwing in "Blitzwing Bop", only to appear fine later, writing off his supposed demise as a trick of the light.
  • The Underbase was previously mentioned in "Do Over". Like its positive counterpart, it is missing, having been launched from Cybertron some time ago.

Transformers references

  • The logo on the cover is the Beast Machines Vehicon faction symbol.
  • As usual, new characters introduced in this story take their appearances from a variety of sources:
    • Shockwave is a virtual redeco of Energon Shockblast, with the inverted colors of his Generation 1 counterpart. His partner, Fistfight (based on Generation 1 Shockwave’s Action Master partner), is described as orange and black in color, the colors of fellow Action Master partner Tyrannitron.
    • R.J. Blackrock is the mirrorverse version of G.B. Blackrock, the Autobot industrialist ally from the Marvel The Transformers comic. Among his employees are Grady, a low-end programmer (his Marvel UK The Transformers counterpart was one of the head scientists of the Intelligence and Information Institute) and Professor Morris (his counterpart, Peter Anthony Morris, worked at Roxxon Oil and had a hatred for G.B. Blackrock, believing him to be the creators of the Transformers. He’s noted to be one of the scientists working on Centurion; in the positive universe, Triple-I forced his counterpart to pilot the positive-universe Centurion).
    • Jetstorm is a repurposing of his Beast Machines counterpart’s Deluxe class toy. In this story, he is emotionless and to the point, compared to his positive-universe counterpart’s more verbose and giddy personality.
    • Franklin Burns High School is the Shattered Glass equivalent of Benjamin Franklin Pierce High School from The Transformers episode "B.O.T." (see "Real-world references" for more on that below). Among the student body attending are Lisa Presser, the cheerleader counterpart to nerdy Elise Presser, also from "B.O.T.", and Jesse, the selfish counterpart of Marvel The Transformers character Jesse, who was Buster Witwicky’s girlfriend. Additionally, Lisa is reminded of "two loser computer nerds" after Sephie defeats Tailgate, obviously a reference to delinquents Martin and Roland from "B.O.T."
    • Tailgate is described as aquamarine and yellow, the colors of South American Malignus toy Camaro, who was redecoed from Windcharger, the toy that also served as the positive-universe Taligate's base mold. As opposed to his counterpart’s personality of hating the humans for enslaving the machines (well, his personality before More than Meets the Eye came along, anyway), Tailgate is depicted as a lover of humans, although he considers them non-sentient and tries to keep them as pets. His ability to steal energy from others using magnets reflects his positive counterpart’s ability to use magnets and latch on to other vehicles, conserving his own fuel.
    • Groove is repurposed from Cybertron Ransack, specifically from the green "GTS" redeco.
  • There are a fair few callbacks to the Marvel The Transformers comic:
    • Shockwave refers to the Decepticons on Earth as Earthforce, after a group of Autobots stationed on Earth in Marvel UK’s later, continuity-ignoring The Transformers issues.
    • The Autobots attacking the Mega-Rig and Shockwave saving Sephie are a reversal of Shockwave attacking G.B. Blackrock's oil-drilling platform and injuring Josie Beller in The Transformers issue #6.
    • Sephie’s transformation into Emulator mirrors Josie’s transformation into Circuit Breaker. Her initial “superhero outfit” is described as a ribbon of golden circuitry that barely covers her body, much like Circuit Breaker’s outfit.
    • Sephie wears a trench coat and hat to conceal her cybernetics before revealing them to Will and Rick, much as Josie Beller does before revealing her exoskeleton to Blackrock in The Transformers issue #9.
    • Blackrock, like his positive universe counterpart in issue #9, makes a deal with the Autobots to supply them oil in return for protection, although there the deal was initiated by the Autobots..
    • The positive-universe Centurion was a robot built by Triple-I to fight the Transformers, as seen in the Marvel UK The Transformers comics. The Shattered Glass version of Centurion resembles his counterpart’s appearance in The Transformers issue #125/Action Force issues 24-27.
    • The Underbase was the subject of a story arc culminating in Starscream absorbing it and going on a rampage.
  • Megatron is stationed in Helix at the beginning of the story, a polity introduced in the Marvel UK The Transformers comics.
  • The stellar spanner functions much in the same way that the space bridge did in the original The Transformers cartoon, with two interconnected bridges on Earth and Cybertron. Another scene that is payed homage to is Shockwave’s contact with Megatron, with story describing the screen on which Starscream attempts to contact Megatron as "white noise [...] broke into multi-colored bands" before resolving into Heatwave’s visage.
  • Tailgate swears by the "spires"; these are the Celestial Spires, towers that the Autobots often swore by in the Marvel The Transformers comics.
  • Power chip rectifiers originate from The Transformers episode "Heavy Metal War", where they were shown to be responsible for the various powers that the Transformers possessed.
  • Elita-One’s ability to freeze herself in time reflects her positive counterpart’s ability to freeze time, as seen in The Transformers episode "The Search for Alpha Trion".
  • Sephie claims she has the right combination of power plans to stop the Autobots; Power Plans were diagrams included on the packaging of Action Master toys.
  • Rodimus tells Starscream that "it’s finished. Over," reversing the usual Furmanism of "over, finished."
  • Bonecrusher believes the Decepticons could create an automated repair chamber using Sephie’s self-repair technology; obviously, this is a CR chamber, introduced in the Beast Wars series.
  • Rodimus calls Trion "A-3", the original name of his postive universe counterpart as seen in The Transformers episode "Forever Is a Long Time Coming".

Real-world References

  • Senator Shore is a mirrorverse version of industrialist Blackthorn Shore from Inhumanoids. Like his counterpart, he wears an eye-patch, though because this is Shattered Glass, his is white instead of black.
  • As usual, Beachcomber's dialog is entirely in song lyrics:
    • ":}}Shadowplay (song)|" by :}}Joy Division|

  • Sephie has an oPhone, the Shattered Glass version of the real-life :}}iPhone|. A related product, the oPod, was mentioned in "Eye in the Sky"..
  • The Centurion's Teleoperated Battlefield Ordnance Batteries are a reference to the friendly robot T-Bob from the :}}M.A.S.K.| series
  • One of Blackrock’s taunts ("But given how troublesome a goose you are, I think I’ll rip you apart, and let my science boys reverse-engineer all the golden eggs I need.") is a references to one of :}}The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs|.

Other trivia

  • Professor Arkeville’s first name is revealed to be Henri.
  • Sephie notes that Shattered Glass Earth has a population of only three billion humans; presumably, this is the result of WWIII.

Errors

  • Cliffjumper’s profile in the Club Magazine noted that he was offlined by Starscream during his Underbase-fueled rampage, and would not be resuscitated until years later, which contradicts the idea that Cliffjumper witnessed Primus and Unicron personally.
