- Studio Nue explainer from Necronomitron on the wiki discord I'm gonna forget if I don't write it down:
| “ | Hang on, here’s the basic chronology of Nue with Diaclone.
In the early 70’s, before they were Nue, Miyatake (as part of Crystal Art) was working on a job for Sunrise. His boss, Kiyomi Numamoto, quit Sunrise to go work for Takara. Then Numamoto tells Miyatake, “Hey, I’ve got work for you at Takara”. So Miyatake got his start at Takara by working for Bandai. Miyatake’s first project for Takara was Henshin Cyborg’s “Cyborg Station CX-1”. He also did some early work on Microman. When Diaclone came along, he invited Kawamori to give it a shot. It seems like Kawamori was good at making the kind of robots toy companies like, with faces and stuff. From what I can tell, Miyatake’s preferences in robots weren’t usually so humanoid. Like, he designed the Macross, and that thing has a fin for a head, and battleships instead of hands. Miyatake’s real jam was spaceship interiors, like he designed the interiors of The Yamato, and Cyborg Station CX-1 is all interiors. Kawamori says he designed some kind of water gun shaped like a spaceship, as a test to see if he could hack it at designing toys. I don’t know if they actually made that thing into a toy or not. Diaclone was one of Kawamori’s first projects, and he was crazy stupid young. Miyatake was his supervisor on it. The majority of design work on Diaclone could be attributed to them, together, but the work isn’t split by character or anything. Kawamori might sketch the Robot Base, but then Miyatake might go in and design the interiors, and the pilots. After that, Takara’s engineers take what they drew, and change it completely to make a toy. Great example, look at Kawamori’s design for Inferno, which you posted from Diaclone World Guide. How much does it look like the toy? So who designed Inferno? But tracking Nue’s involvement, it wouldn’t just be design. Like Nue artists (including Miyatake) also did the paintings for the interiors of the Diaclone catalogs. |
