A force field, sometimes called an energy shield, is a device used for purposes of defending an object or location, or serving as a means of imprisonment.

The Transformers cartoon

Trailbreaker never really had a consistent look for his force fields.

The Autobot Trailbreaker was equipped with a force field generator. He often used it to move things away, such as floods. Triple Takeover After being attacked by the Rainmakers, Trailbreaker projected a force field to allow the Autobots time to repair themselves from the damages suffered from acid rain. Trailbreaker was equipped with a force-field projector that could create an invisible barrier with up to a 30-foot radius, capable of withstanding penetration by all forms of projectiles, all wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation except those of extremely high intensity, and temperatures as high as 800,000 degrees Centigrade. However, the force-field can be weakened and destroyed by a sustained assault. During a confrontation at a rail yard in northern California, Bruticus shot Defensor with his sonic stun-gun but the blast harmlessly bounced off the Autobot's force field. Child's Play

When the Decepticons attacked the Autobots during a showdown for leadership between Blaster and Grimlock on Earth's moon, their starcruiser was protected by a force shield that made it invulnerable to Blaster's electro-scrambler. However, Grimlock's energo-sword was able to cut through it, allowing Blaster to disrupt the ship, forcing the Decepticons to retreat. Totaled!

The Big Broadcast of 2006

In the UK version of the story, the events of "The Big Broadcast of 2006" are a fabrication invented by Wreck-Gar.

After receiving reports from Sky Lynx that the Quintessons were up to no good on the planet of Junk, Rodimus Prime sent the Aerialbots to investigate. Encountering a Quintesson Cruiser above the planet, they formed Superion but the Quintessons raised a force field around the ship. Superion fired all of his jets into the field, causing it to overload, rendering the Autobot combiner semi-conscious and destroying the cruiser's weapons systems. The Big Broadcast of 2006

Rhythms of Darkness!

In an alternate future of 2009 where Galvatron had taken control of North America, his Decepticon Powerbase was protected by an energy field. When the Autobot/human resistance attacked, their primary target was the field's generator but almost immediately Crossblades was shot out of the sky and crashed into the shield, bringing it down at the cost of his own life. Regeneration One

When Scorponok ordered Grimlock to execute the Autobot Punch at the Civil Defense Hub, the Dinobot rebelled, attacking Scorponok instead. Unfortunately Scorponok had planned for this eventuality and Grimlock's blasts were repelled by a force field. Natural Selection, Part Three

Transformers '84

When Megatron's antimatter abilities threatened to go out of control, AUNTIE raised her force fields to maximum to protect herself. Having breached the Ark before the force field could be raised, Grimlock violently stuck his fist into AUNTIE's central processor to shut her down, dissipating the antimatter and lowering the force field. The Axalon had a force field that was damaged in its initial fight with the Darksyde. Beast Wars (Part 1) Following its crash, the force field became prone to failure, like the instance when the shield circuitry was hit. Chain of Command After being on Earth for some time, Rhinox developed the Sentinel security systems which included a force field. A Better Mousetrap The shield could stand up to a heavy amount of punishment, though sufficient firepower would cause it to fail. Coming of the Fuzors (Part 2)

When the Maximals and Predacons found the Ark, they found that Teletraan I was still online and projecting its force field around the ship, requiring the access codes inscribed in the Golden Disk to deactivate. Under Megatron's orders, Blackarachnia reactivated the force field and turned the point defences against the Maximals. A perfect shot by Rattrap disabled the fusion cannon that was harassing them, the resulting power surge deactivating the force field. The Agenda (Part III)

After the Axalon sank into the river near it, Optimal Situation the Maximals moved into the Ark. Rhinox attempted to reboot Teletraan I's force field only to discover that Maximal technology he was using to interface with the ancient AI had developed too far from its Autobot counterpart to be compatible.

Subsequently, the Maximals attempted to salvage Sentinel from the remains of the Axalon, but the Predacons managed to steal the control system and installed it in the Darksyde, simultaneously managing to bolster their own defenses and putting the Maximals on a defensive footing for the remainder of the Beast Wars. When the Darksyde came under attack from Tigerhawk, Megatron ordered the shields raised but they did nothing to impede the emissary's meteoric arrival. Other Victories

Megatron installed powerful shields aboard the Grand Mal, which were the only defense the Maximals could activate when the Vehicons attempted to take the vessel back. The shields, however, cut Botanica off from Cybertron's organic core. To save her, Rattrap launched an escape pod containing a shield emitter which mimicked the Grand Mal's own shield harmonics. Megatron found the emitter and transmitted the harmonics to Obsidian, whose forces shot the Grand Mal out from the sky. During a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, the Autobots set up a "force dome" to keep the infection from spreading. The Transformers: Infestation #1 When Britt added Kup to the collective intelligence of the Undermind, she learned how to create a force dome to keep out the Autobots and Galvatron's forces. Trailbreaker was depressed about his power to create force fields being his defining feature. They turned out to be fortunate in that one protected him when one of Brainstorm's inventions sent the rest of the crew into stasis and a group of Decepticons invaded the Lost Light. When scared, Trailbreaker could produce an appropriately named "panic bubble" which trapped him within an impregnable forcefield for a hard thirty minutes. Words Hang in the Air Tragically, such a feature would ultimately seal his fate as, after setting one up to escape Vos, he found that the stasis locked Kaon was within the field. After the assassin had used its energy to revitalize himself, he proceeded to dismember his hapless saviour before both Decepticons teleported away. Births, Deaths, and Interventions

Trailbreaker's power had been controlled by a forcefield generator on his palm. Once he had been killed, Megatron retrieved the generator. The Custom-Made Now When on Necroworld, he fuelled it with antimatter, trapping the Decepticon Justice Division inside the shield before using the antimatter to kill them. In anticipation for Earth's official induction ceremony into the Council of Worlds, Metroplex erected a forcefield around his city mode and pumped oxygen into it for weeks. First Strike #1

When the Prysmosian wizard Merklynn created New Prysmos in Cybertron's underground, he erected a magical forcefield around it to keep he Cybertronians out. First Strike #6 The Cybertronians eventually managed to breach Merklynn's shield and erected one of their own. Schismatic When the Prysmosians discovered that the Cybertronians were vulnerable to their magic, the Darkling Lords destroyed the pylons generating the Cybertronian forcefield as the opening act of their genocidal campaign. Of Masters and Mayhem

Both Toxitron and his weapons had specialized force fields to prevent the Decepticon's corrosive sludge from consuming them and allow him to non-lethally touch objects. The Toxic Transformer When Wreckage formed, the force fields protected the other Wreckers from the sludge. Deadly Aim

Star Trek vs. Transformers

The USS Enterprise relied on a force field for defence agains hostile ships. When the ship fell into a trap by laid by a Decepticon/Klingon alliance, Arex ordered the shields raised but the command came too late to prevent Trypticon from crippling the Enterprise. Prime's Directive, Part Two

2019 IDW continuity

Voin Asserters could call upon a forcefield. When one faced off against Quake, it activated its shield when he got too close, but this did nothing to save its life. Prisoners

War for Cybertron Trilogy cartoon

When the Ark and Nemesis emerged from the Dead Universe, Earthrise episode 5 both were left without any power. When the intervening Fool's Fortune suffered a warp core breach and detonated, the lack of shields sent both the Ark and Nemesis hurtling down into the gravity well of a nearby planet. When the Autobots and Maximals claimed the Allspark, the Ark erected its force field to defend against the Nemesis' cannons. They lasted long enough for Teletraan I to convert the Ark into a body for itself. Kingdom episode 5

2021 IDW Beast Wars comic

The Axalon's force field was damaged in its fight with the Darksyde. After having spent their first night after the crash landing enhancing their ship's sensor array, the Maximals had no time to repair the force field before the Predacons attacked. Savage Landing Part 5 During the following battle, Rattrap managed to repair the force field, its activation forcing the Predacons away from the ship. When the field ejected the defected Dinobot as well, the Maximals fired the point defences from inside their shield to scare off the other Predacons before bringing Dinobot into the Axalon. With the force field fully online, the Maximals enjoyed some down time while getting to know Dinobot. This complacency left them unawares when the recently activated Blackarachnia, her spark still reading as a Maximal's, was able to walk directly into the Axalon whereupon her shell program activated. When the Maximals raided the Darksyde for the Golden Disk, the Predacons trapped Optimus Primal, Rattrap and Nyx behind a force field wall before Primal managed to manipulate Megatron into releasing them. Maximals Strike Back, Part 3

The Children of the Vok trapped Optimus Primal and Megatron behind a force field. Observing that the Children had reverted to beast mode to exit the cave they were in, Primal correctly gambled that the force fields could be bypassed with their beast modes. Children of the Vok

The Steelhaven possessed a forcefield which the Elite Guard used a quarantine against those filthy organics that swarmed over Earth. Elite Guard second-in-command Sentinel Prime's personal weapon was a Skyboom Shield. The Elite Guard Lugnut and Blitzwing managed to get around the ship's forcefield by tunnelling under it. Sumdac Tower had a force field which activated whenever the tower was under siege. Total Meltdown SUV: Society of Ultimate Villainy When the Lugnut Supremes attacked Detroit, the tower's force field again protected it but it failed when the now Starscream Supremes began cycling up to self-destruct. Though two of the Omega Sentinels were destroyed, Prowl and Jazz used processor-over-matter to reconstitute the AllSpark, entrapping the last Starscream Supreme in a force field of AllSpark energy where it self-destructed harmlessly. The Ark had a force field. During the collapse of a crystal ice moon, the shield failed, forcing the Autobots to shoot the debris. Perfect Storm After the Ark had been found, Shockwave attempted to detonate Mount St. Hilary, Teletraan-X managed to raise the shields just in time. Eruption

When the Decepticons erected a Planet Smasher on the moon, the complex was protected by a forcefield, one that Starscream ordered activated in a failed attempt to be rid of Megatron. Unfortunately for the Decepticons, the forcefield had been designed by Wheeljack, allowing him to quickly jury-rig a device that turned it off. Sea of Tranquility

Wheeljack later created a force shield blaster, which allowed him to generate a small protective bubble around any target. Optimus Prime put it to good use by containing a black hole and a Hyper Fuel-energized Grimlock, preventing both from doing any more damage to the Ark. The Visitor

When the Ark fell victim to an EMP storm and was at risk of being destroyed by a supernova, Arcee and Grimlock scrambled to power and raise the ship's shields before Teletraan-X puttered back inside and pressed a big red button that brought the shields back online, saving the ship. Perfect Storm

During the Quintesson invasion of Cybertron following the Great War, the invading flagship erected a forcefield around itself once the Cybertronian race had been freed from captivity. The Scientist

Haunted by the visions of an obicular-class parasitic entity, Luna 3 was kept behind a forcefield to quarantine it. Needing access to the moon, Bumblebee recruited Meteorfire for his expertise in breaching forcefields. Alien Hunt! With Meteorfire And Cosmos

After running afoul of an alternate version of himself, Megatron developed a force field capable of preventing any incursions from other universes that surrounded the Decepticon hemisphere of Cybertron. At only 86% charge, however, the shield proved able to only delay the alternate Megatron and his Decepticon supersoldiers. Silent Strike The Other One

Following the alternate Megatron's demise, the supersoldiers began fighting for leadership. After hearing Astrotrain's warning, the Autobots reactivated the planetary shield but it did nothing to stop the supersoldiers from beaming in. The Perfect Decepticon

Sector Seven had a force field around the Hoover Dam. When the Decepticons tracked Megatron and the AllSpark to the structure, Starscream and Blackout disabled the force field so Barricade could enter. Transformers The Game (PSP)

Transformers: War for Cybertron (Xbox 360/PS3/PC)

All Cybertronians possessed a force field surrounding their structure though these shields would quickly collapse if subject to sustained firepower. Cybertronians could don overshields to enhance their own shielding systems.

Soundwave had a force field within Zeta Prime's holding cell in Kaon prison. He was able to launch his Mini-Cons through the force field but was forced to leave it to recover them when they were sufficiently damaged by the Autobot rescue party. War for Cybertron

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (PS3, X360, PC)

The Ark was protected by a forcefield prior to its launch. When the Decepticons stormed Iacon in the waning days of the Great War, three Warp Cannons fired on the forcefield, nearly collapsing it before Metroplex managed to destroy the weapons. Fall of Cybertron
