CVO attempts to end the threat of the Elder Gods.

Synopsis

[edit]

At the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, a lady thief attempts to recover a microdot from an "obscure painting" that promised to shake the very foundations of the world, but as she cuts into the painting, tentacles emerge! The thief tries to run away, but runs out of bullets as the tentacles draw closer...

In Cross Plains, Texas, the Elder Gods are still using Cross's Artillica-infused heart. Overmars and Nikodemus observe the situation from CVO Headquarters; Nikodemus explains that the Elder Gods need three things to break into their reality—the Artillica, the monstrous slug in Texas to act as a "wedge", and an anchor... but Nikodemus doesn't know where it is. In Coit Tower in San Francisco, Bools is introduced by Amanda Houellebecq to the anchor in the form of the Relic, an ugly little thing cut out of H. P. Lovecraft's large intestine. Bools asks why Oblivion hasn't destroyed the Relic, to which Amanda answers that it's also necessary to shut the Elder Gods' passageway for good. Bools breaks open the Relic's glass cage, only for it to quickly enter his mouth—Amanda forgot to mention earlier that it needs a host.

Britt is still at the convention in Providence, Rhode Island, where she gets an alert from Benny that Overmars has sent a drone to take out Cross—which Britt notes will only make things worse by dispersing the Artillica. Both Cross and Bools discover that the Elder Gods don't dare see both of them come under harm, as the slug protects Cross from the drone's missile and their forces in San Francisco don't touch Bools. Both Britt and Bools are brought to Texas, where they explain that, to close the rip in reality, they'll need to tear out the Artillica—Cross's heart—attach it to the Relic, and toss it into the tear. Cross consents to this plan and Britt tearfully rips out his heart. Despite some temptation from the Gods, Britt turns over the heart to Amanda, who attaches the recently-puked-out Relic and tosses both into the tear. However, the tentacles entrap her and pull her through the portal before it closes, to Bools's despair. With the Elder Gods banished from this reality, their servants and presence dissolve, allowing the thief and other CVO operatives to recover.

At CVO headquarters, the team are shocked that Cross survives, speculating that the Artillica has left a "phantom heart" keeping him alive. However, this so-called heart looks similar to the Elder Gods' handiwork...
