« 1985 »

The year 1985 (MCMLXXXV) is the second year of the Transformers brand.

"Looks like someone's still preoccupied with 1985."

Events

Non Fiction

  • 20 years before the merger with Takara, Tomy's US branch registers the name "Scrapper" as a trademark in the "toys" field. This same year, Hasbro releases a Constructicon of the same name. This presumably does not result in any repercussions for Hasbro.
  • GiG abandons the Trasformer line and instead re-releases the toys in actual Transformers packaging.
  • The rap group, A Tribe Called Quest was formed.

Transformers vs. G.I. Joe

  • After its defeat in World War II, Cobra resurfaces as a terrorist organisation. The remains of the Transformers, having been nearly wiped out during the war, are used in a massive arms race.
  • A G.I. Joe team led by Flint attacks a Cobra shipping facility in New York City. While the facility is largely destroyed, Destro and Scrap-Iron manage to escape via Trouble Bubble. Soon afterwards, the Joes detect the crash of an Autobot shuttlecraft near Portland. Flint and several other Joes were sent to retrieve it, and after meeting with a rookie team led by Spirit, they repel a Cobra strike team and recover the unconscious Blaster and Perceptor. Along with Duke and Stalker, a retired Scarlett decides it is time to tell the new recruits about their adventure with the Transformers. Targets of Opportunity

Transformers/Back to the Future

In the year 1985, the human Doc Brown had discovered time travel, converting a DMC-12 Delorean into his time machine, his young friend Marty McFly using the machine to travel back in time only to return a few moments after he left. This technology quickly became a target for the Decepticons. When Marty McFly awoke the next morning, he found that 1985 to have been conquered by the Decepticons. Transformers/Back to the Future #1

Notes

  1. There were four types of "Motorized Transformers" (called "Mini-spies" in the television commercial for the figures and "Koma cars" on Hasbro's shipping cases): "4WD Type" (or "Jeep Type"), "Buggy Type", "FX-1 Type" and "Porsche Type". Each was available alternatively in white, yellow or blue, with the color supposedly depending on which figure they were packaged with.
  2. The 1985 "Autobot Cars" price point was given a somewhat odd treatment with two separate assortments, each of which contained re-releases of six of the 1984 figures (packaged one per case in a case of 12) and three of the new 1985 figures (each packaged two per case). The only exception to this was Skids, who was actually released at least as early as December 1984, in 1984 packaging along with the other '84 Autobot Cars, in which he took the place of an extra Mirage that had previously been used to bring the number of figures contained in those cases up to twelve. Due to this, he was packed in the 1985 assortments like the '84 toys, at only one Skids per case.
