While not the most common Transformers merchandise, roleplay toys have a history dating back to the beginning of the franchise. They're known for a different play pattern compared to most Transformers toys, intending to allow kids (or adults) to pretend to be someone else. This can be with alt modes that realistically scale as every day items, allowing for play as though they were the real items. Others are more focused on allow them to imagine them being specific characters Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, "roleplaying" adventures as them.

Due to the large volume of roleplay toys that have been made the following list is of unique first-use items only. Additionally for Halloween costumes see Halloween.

Blasters and guns

A semi-common type of roleplay item are toy replicas of blasters or guns. These break down into two main types; those that shoot projectiles and those with electronics that produce light and sound. Given current safety standards, designs on these clearly appear as toys, sporting things such as bright orange tips on the barrels.

Projectile firing

These items fire a foam dart or other projectile. Many of these are co-branded and use Nerf darts, as it is a Hasbro brand.

With alt modes

Due to modern safety standards, it's less common to see newer figures with gun alt modes. This includes both realistic ones as well as Cybertronian ones. Typically these characters will have their alt mode changed, such as with Megatron commonly being a tank with modern releases. Others are...creatively reinterpreted, such as Titans Return Sixshot's gun mode being flipped upside down and being called a submarine.
