Roleplay toy

Ever want to pretend to be an actual Transformer? Roleplay toys are for you! Grab a sword or blaster, put on a voice-changing helmet, and you're ready to roll as your favorite Autobot or Decepticon!
What are roleplay toys?
[edit]Roleplay toys are all about allowing kids (or adults) to use their imagination as part of play. Unlike action figure play patterns, which allows you to imagine scenarios as you play with the figures, roleplay toys allow them to pretend to be a specific role, such as a doctor, astronaut, or superhero. With Transformer, this includes pretending to be characters such as Optimus Prime or Bumblebee by using dress up items and toy weapons. Another aspect of the Transformers brand is some figure releases have alt modes that replicate realistic items, such as music devices, cameras, or even guns. This allows the child to play pretend with the item, using it as an adult would with a real version it. Finally there are figures that have fantastical alt modes such as laser guns that straddle the line between these two, allowing a child to use the item as though it were real while playing pretend with their role with using it.
Roleplay Toy Releases
[edit]Dress-up
[edit]Given most Transformers don't wear clothing, most Transformers dress up items tend to be full body costumes, helmets and masks instead. These allow the wearer to disguise themselves as their favorite robot.
Dress-up costumes and accessories
[edit]
Unlike Halloween costumes, dress up items are intended to be used year round. Some can also use supplemental items for enhancing dress up, such as voice changers, or other accessories.

Electronics items
[edit]One of the largest category of roleplay toy are electronic related. Funny enough, many electronic items don't actually contain electronic components.
Cameras
[edit]
Say cheese! Though less common with modern releases due to cell phones effectively replacing them for the casual consumer, there still are a fair number of film, digital, and video camera roleplay items.

Cell phones and tablets
[edit]
Given the widespread usage of cellphones and tablets, it's not surprising that roleplay items using them have started to become common.

Video game and computer accessories
[edit]
More of a modern roleplay style of item, these cover controllers and other computer devices. It's worth noting that those released in the "Transformers Device Label" line are actual working computer accessories.

Optical items
[edit]
The bulk of optical related roleplay alt modes are thanks to Perceptor. While all of them do contain transparent viewers to look through, most don't actually work to magnify what's seen very well.

Weapons
[edit]With the war between the Autobots and Decepticons being so ingrained into the Transformers brand, it's makes sense that many roleplay toys are weapons.
Guns and blasters
[edit]One of the most common type of roleplay toys are guns. While some early earlier releases may have replicated more realistic gun appearances and shapes, due to modern safety standards, most now are clearly designed to appear as toys. Additionally modern releases tend to be called blasters instead to further separate them from real world firearms.
Electronic
[edit]
Electronic guns and blasters are intended to make noises or light up when their trigger is pulled. Basically they're the ideal toy to give to the kids of a parents you really want to drive crazy.

Projectile firing
[edit]
Some guns and blasters fire darts, pellets or other projectile. Many of these are co-branded with Nerf, as it's a Hasbro brand, and include darts that are compatible with Nerf blasters. Some may also include electronic lights and sounds to enhance the firing effects.

Gun alt modes
[edit]
Due to modern safety standards, it's less common to see newer figures with gun alt modes. This includes both realistic ones as well as Cybertronian ones. Typically these characters will have their alt mode changed, such as with Megatron commonly being a tank with modern releases. Others are...creatively reinterpreted, such as Titans Return Sixshot's gun mode being flipped upside down and being called a submarine. Some of these do also overlap with electronics or projectile firing capabilities.

Swords and melee weapons
[edit]
While there are less melee weapon roleplay toy releases compared guns, these do still pop up semi-regularly. Most tend to feature sound effects such as clanging noises or other effects.

Miniature or oversized roleplay toys
[edit]
A number of Transformers toys have everyday object alt modes that are smaller or larger than the object they represent. As such it's a bit harder to use them as roleplay items as they do stick out somewhat. Of note almost every BotBots figure falls into this category. Due to the large volume of BotBots, we're not going to list them all below.

Unreleased roleplay items
[edit]
A few roleplay items sadly never saw release. At least we can roleplay what it'd be like if they actually were.
