Movie continuity family
« Age of Extinction »

The Transformers: Age of Extinction toyline coincides with the fourth film in Michael Bay's live-action film series.

Unlike the toy lines of the previous three films, this line is divided into two distinct series:

  • "Robots in Disguise", a series of simpler, more gimmicky toys aimed towards younger children. Included in this series are the non-transforming Titan Heroes figures. In Japan, these were sold under the main "Lost Age Series" label.
  • An Age of Extinction-specific version of Generations, featuring more complex and movie-accurate toys aimed towards older children and adult collectors. In Japan, toys from this line were sold under the "Movie Advanced Series" subtitle.

Robots in Disguise

[edit]

The "Robots in Disguise" line is primarily focused on simpler toys for the younger set.

One-Step Changers

[edit]

One-Step Changers are smaller figures which, as the name suggests, can be transformed either direction in one step, more or less. Exactly how the transformation is accomplished varies from figure, ranging from Activator-style spring loading to Automorph-type gearing/levering.

Wave 4 Wave 5 Mega One-Step Electronic Stomp & Chomp
Wave 3's Decepticon Stinger toy was redefined as a Walmart exclusive (see below) seemingly at the last minute. Judging by web retail listings,[1] the intent was for Stinger to be replaced in the wave 3 case by Lockdown, but multiple retail sightings indicate that some quantity of cases was mistakenly packed per the original plan, leading to Stinger toys with "Walmart Exclusive" stickers being found at Target stores.

Power Battlers

[edit]

Spiritual successors to the Fast Action Battlers, Power Battlers are Deluxe-sized figures with basic transformations and a 'battling' action feature in robot mode. They are also commonly referred to as "Power Attackers", presumably an older working name that got changed very late in the game so it appears just as frequently as the final name.

Dino Sparkers

[edit]

Dino Sparkers each include non-transforming static figures of a Dinobot and a rider. The Dinobot is cast in translucent plastic, and features a pull-back-and-go motor with a sparking gimmick, a gimmick not seen in any Transformers line since the original G1 line in 1988.

Bumblebee with Strafe
Reports from Toy Fair 2014 suggested the existence of a fourth Dino Sparkers toy featuring Lockdown, corroborated by a previously leaked[2] listing for a 'Lockdown & Wolf' toy. Ultimately, this product was never officially revealed or solicited.

Flip & Change/Smash & Change

[edit]

This assortment of larger figures focuses, like One-Step Changers, on simple transformations. All but the first wave's Optimus Prime use a form of autotransformation that has one flip the figure over itself.

Wave 1 Wave 2 Wave 3

Titan Heroes & Guardians

[edit]

Like previous toys under the 'Titan' branding, Titan Heroes are 12-inch tall, non-transforming action figures with a basic five points of articulation. The Titan Guardian assortment is basically the same thing, but with a larger 16-inch height.

Generations (Series M4)

[edit]

With Hasbro's renewed focus on simpler toys for children, the "traditional" Deluxe, Voyager and Leader Class assortments were explicitly split off under the Generations banner, receiving a much reduced focus in marketing and even being entirely store exclusive in the United Kingdom and Germany (Deluxe and Voyager at Toys"R"Us, and Leader at Argos and Rossmann drug stores, respectively).

Exclusives

[edit]

All the usual suspects received exclusive product for the Age of Extinction toyline, with the "big three" of brick-and-mortar toy retail each receiving a set of themed releases: Target's capsule centred on "Silver Knight Optimus Prime", an upgrade ultimately deleted from the finished film, Toys"R"Us carried a range of "then & now"-type packs, and Walmart's offerings largely focused on the Legion size class, while also featuring the line's only toys of new character Stinger.

Movie Advanced Series

[edit]

TakaraTomy's Movie Advanced Series (ムービーアドバンスドシリーズ) is something of an equivalent to Hasbro's Age of Extinction Generations line, being made up of the mainline, older-kid/fan-aimed size classes. It does not limit itself to just toys and characters from Age of Extinction however, using older molds to bring back past characters (including a few surprises).

Numerous online retailers listed "AD18 Decepticon A" and "AD19 Autobot A" for preorder, but ultimately, nothing ever became of those listings. It can be assumed that whatever toys were planned ended up being canceled, leaving those ID numbers unused.

[edit]

The Lost Age Series is Takaratomy's version of the Hasbro Robots in Disguise subline, featuring the simpler, more kid-aimed toys, primarily the One-Step Changers and Power Battlers.

Notes

[edit]
  • The Power Battlers toys themselves are not identified by that name on their packaging; however, the name "Power Battlers" is referenced (with a ™ trademark claim) on the back of Stomp & Chomp Grimlock's packaging. It also appeared on the placards at BotCon 2014 and San Diego Comic-Con 2014. Hasbro's public website, on the other hand, used the name "Power Attacker" for the individual toys' listings, as did the Hasbro Toy Shop website, which shares its database with Hasbro's main website. The name "Power Battlers" only appeared on the Hasbro website once, as part of a press release, and on the Hasbro Toy Shop website as the name of the category for the toys in question. Other online retailers, including international ones, were a mixed bag, with some picking one name and running with it and others using both names in different instances. Furthermore, German retailers identified them as "Deluxe Attackers" across the board, while the gimmick name "Power Punch" was also used as an assortment identifier by some retailers around the world. So basically, it's the same problem that previously affected the "Legends of Cybertron" aka "Cybertron All Stars" aka "Cybertron Micro Series" figures and the "Construct-Bots" aka "Construct-A-Bots".
  • All of the Age of Extinction Generations Deluxe, Voyager, and Leader class figures feature at least one small hexagonal port on the back of their torso or pelvis. While its function is not explicitly mentioned in either the instructions or packaging materials for the toy, it has been deduced that the purpose of these ports is to make the figure compatible with display stands such as the Bandai "Tamashii Stage" stands.[3]
  • Various toys released concurrently with the Age of Extinction figures were available in packaging based on the general Age of Extinction design template, but lacking the Age of Extinction logo. See Transformers (2014 toyline) for more details.
