The origins of the Laser Beasts and Beastformers.
Synopsis
[edit]Ten thousand years ago, a starship crewed by the Three Wise Ones crashes on the planet Beast, then devoid of life. It's habitable since there is air and water, but the heat on the surface is too much for them and they take up residence in the cool underground, an event that marks year 001 in the Beast calendar. They go on to create many things, including the three Hunter machines which they hide away after realizing their destructive power is too great. One of the Wise Ones begins an initiative to populate the planet by engineering the Laser Beasts, a new species whose people can absorb artificial solar energy through lenses in their chests, intending for this race to keep protecting Beast after the Three Wise Ones are long gone.
The Laser Beasts develop a machine-driven underground civilization and grow increasingly mechanical themselves, their hearts becoming cold and unemphatic like machines. A small group of them is opposed to the direction their society is heading and travel to the surface, where they become the first Beastformers. A long time later in the year 20014, extreme weather patterns strike the planet, wreaking havoc on the Beastformers and opening a crack in the earth leading to the Laser Beasts' underground city. The city is flooded by water from the surface, forcing the Laser Beasts to abandon it and find a new home.

Notes
[edit]- The Three Wise Ones are depicted as customized Beastformers toys clad in robes, looking very different from the art of them seen elsewhere in the publication. A text blurb helpfully points out that their toys are not available for purchase.
