Slag (aka Slug[[#Slug|[Note]]]) is the Dinobot most likely to live up to the team's bad reputation. Slag is surly, mean-spirited, nasty, and disturbingly violent, to the point where it really is a wonder he's not a Decepticon. Slag will fight anyone, over anything, at the drop of a microchip, and fight dirty. Slag enjoys nothing more than reducing his enemies to pools of molten metal with his fire-breath (and he's more than willing to include annoying Autobots on that list). He'd swim in the pools to celebrate if he could.

None of the Dinobots really like Optimus Prime, but he and Sludge share an especially intense dislike of him. But it's not just Prime's orders he questions. He'll even mouth off at Grimlock every now and then, but somehow does not end up as scrap or lunch. Slag's bad attitude means the rest of the Autobot forces are unlikely to come to his aid when he bites off more than he can chew.

Slag was developed, along with his fellow Dinobots Sludge and Grimlock, after the Autobots discovered dinosaur bones in their volcanic headquarters. Inspired by the power of the prehistoric beasts, Wheeljack and Ratchet built a trio of Dinobots to add firepower to the Autobot forces. The Dinobots proved too dangerous at first, and Optimus Prime ordered Wheeljack to abandon the Dinobot project. Wheeljack continued improving the trio of titans in secret, crafting memory components that made them smarter and easier to control. When the rest of the Autobots were captured by the Decepticons at the Great Falls hydroelectric power plant, Wheeljack dispatched the Dinobots to free their comrades and destroy the Decepticons. The Dinobots succeeded in forcing a Decepticon retreat and were welcomed as members of the Autobot team. S.O.S. Dinobots

One of Slag's greatest weaknesses was his hostility, and Megatron was able to use this to his advantage, turning the Dinobots against Optimus Prime. A new pair of Dinobots, Snarl and Swoop, stalled the old trio until the unstable meteor nearby exploded. While Wheeljack attempted to show off Grimlock's newfound finesse, Slag bumped into Grimlock and caused him to run amok. Then Sludge stepped on Slag's tail, and Slag instinctively breathed fire, scorching the Ark's computers. Afterwards, the Dinobots were sent to a new island that Bumblebee and Powerglide had discovered so they could master their abilities. Slag liked it, and thought that it'd offer room to move and stumble around. Slag was sent with the four other Dinobots to an airport with Decepticons in the vicinity, despite his dislike of everything. Breaking into their secret hideout with Snarl, Slag then melted Starscream's null-ray, to the Seeker's horror, and when he was dogpiled by Thrust and Thundercracker, threw them into a plane. During the Battle of Autobot City, the Dinobots battled Devastator. Slag was the only one that managed to get a hit on Devastator, ramming into him at full speed. The Dinobots searched for the two Autobots, with Grimlock believing they were close by, but Slag disagreed. He and Sludge broke down a door as Sharkticons prepared to execute the Autobots, giving a belated "Excuse me!" to a Quintesson prosecutor—who was being crushed under the combined weight of Slag, Sludge, and the door. Slag was one of the Primitives who were called by Primacron's assistant to battle Primacron's newest creation, Tornedron. ====Ask Vector Prime====
When Gong and Sideways mashed two universes together, they created a world where the Transformers and GoBots co-existed during the Unicron War. Slag evacuated Guardian City aboard a Command Center after Galvatron and his Renegade-Decepticon alliance attacked, and Kup entertained the Dinobots with a few tall tales as they headed to Cybertron. Galvatron attacked their ship, stranding them on Antares III.
The four Dinobots tried to search for the missing Kup and Hot Rod, but not even Swoop could locate their whereabouts. Slag and Grimlock briefly got into a fight, but encountered the RoGuns, who led them to the twisted court of the Master Renegade, where Kup and Hot Rod were on trial. The Dinobots barged their way into the courtroom, with Slag pausing to apologize to the squashed Klaws. After stealing the Master Renegade's ship and dubbing it "Grungy", the group headed to Quartex. Kup met up with Boulder, and together the alliance rescued Major Mo's group of Autobots and Guardians from Magmar's evil Rock Lords.
The Autobots, Guardians, Rock Lords, and RoGuns returned to Cybertron aboard the Grungy and a Rock Lord vessel, where they battled Unicron. Before they were finished their fight, Vector Prime managed to disentangle the two universes, setting history back on its proper course. Echoes and Fragments
Deviations
In a timeline where Optimus Prime killed Megatron during their Autobot City duel, Slag was on Optimus Prime's shuttle when the Autobots set off to reclaim Cybertron from the leaderless Decepticons. They were attacked en route by "Megascream": a reformatted Starscream now in the thrall of Unicron. They managed to escape after Megascream and his troops retreated, touching down on Quintessa to repair the damage.
On the watery surface of the planet, the Autobots encountered a group of Sharkticons. Kup's universal greeting ended poorly, so Optimus dispatched the Dinobots to take care of the threat. Optimus, Kup, and the Dinobots stormed into a Quintesson courtroom, where they rescued Kranix and learned more about the threat of Unicron. When repairs on the ship had completed, the team picked up Hot Rod from Junkion and returned to Cybertron, where Optimus announced his intent to confront Unicron head-on. Transformers: Deviations

Told that Shockwave lived again, Slag readily agreed on behalf of the Dinobots to hunt him down once more. However, the Dinobots had to deal with Megatron first; they did not fare well. After Ratchet managed to defeat the Decepticon leader, the Dinobots accompanied him back to the Ark. Repeat Performance!

On the way, Ratchet tried to explain to the Dinobots that scarring the piss out of humans wasn't a good idea, but the lesson didn't really take. Over the following weeks, each Dinobot began suffering from a breakdown of their cybo-dendrons, an anomaly in their neuro-circuitry caused by their extended time spent immersed in the tar pits. This corrosion caused them to revert to a near mindless, animal state. Slag had retreated to the Old River Valley in the Idaho badlands and, once they learned about the Dinobots' problem, it was there that the Autobots sought him out. A search team consisting of Jazz, Ironhide, and Jetfire arrived in one of the shuttles and found Slag in a one-sided struggle with two human cowboys. After getting the humans to safety, the Autobots tried to wrangle themselves a turbo-steer. They tried some amusing tactics like taking the triceratops by the horns or using Ironhide like a red flag to distract the fighting mad Dinobot, but ultimately they couldn't have won without the help of the Decepticons. Ironhide found Laserbeak spying on them and, after stunning the tin-plated turkey, he grabbed the Decepticon and thrust him inside Slag's mouth just before the Dinobot let loose with his flame breath. The resulting backwash took Slag off-line and allowed the Autobots to take him into protective custody. Dinobot Hunt!

Slag and the other Dinobots live in an underground jungle environment, hidden beneath the Antarctic ice cap. He can fly. The Dinobots left together from their home to head to Autobot headquarters. Slag complained that they shouldn't stick to a large formation, as he felt that this would make them an easy target for the Decepticons. His advice was ignored. Later, when they were attacked by Starscream and the Decepticon superjets, as Slag had predicted, Slag decided to break off from the group and continue on his way by himself. As he moved away from the other Dinobots, he was caught off-guard by Ramjet, who smashed a hole in Slag's side. Slag was ordered to return to the Dinobots’ recovery base to get his wounds treated by Ratchet. There, Ratchet finished his repairs just as the Crusher forced its way into the Dinobots base. Though Slag was initially frightened by the machine, the vibrations it made caused hundred of Dinobots to be freed from their tar cocoons. Slag joined his brethren and beat back the Decepticons. Jaws of Terror

Although Ratchet managed to repair the cybo-dendron damage, the Dinobots remained trapped in comatose states, experiencing the occasional dreams as their minds attempt to wake up. Slag's dreams revolve around the epic battle he had with Shockwave four million years ago, and the haunting feeling of going off-line beneath the tar pits. Victory! Slag and the other Dinobots eventually recovered fully from their ordeal, although they were still none too happy to see Ratchet upon awakening. Second Generation!

The Dinobots were largely uncomfortable under Optimus Prime's command. When Prime organized a battle unit to assault the Decepticon base, not to demolish their enemy but to record some vital data, the Dinobots balked at the idea. The idea of going into battle without intending to win was an anathema to them. Slag and the other Dinobots stood by while Swoop mercilessly butchered Devastator and killed the Constructicons one by one. The rest of the Dinobots then joined in ripping the Constructicons' carcasses into scrap metal for good measure. Battle for Earth

After their big speech, the Dinobots apparently hung around the Ark for a little while anyways, but soon became bored with their inactivity (as they were now soldiers without a general). Finally, on a whim, they decided to help Sludge go after the "beautiful golden human" he had met while his cybo-dendrons were malfunctioning. Joy Meadows, the aforementioned "human", was a reporter who drew some serious heat after she started questioning the Robot-Master cover story being pumped over the air waves. Both the Decepticons and the US government had a stake in making sure the public believed all the Transformers were under the control of a so-called "terrorist", and so they wanted her silenced. After the Dinobots agreed to do an interview with Meadows to set the story straight, Swoop flew off to pick up her camera crew, but found his transformation controls malfunctioning when he returned. Demonstrating his rarely acknowledged tech-smarts, Slag located and identified a homing beacon on Swoop, crushing it. Despite that, they were still found by the Decepticons. The 'Cons ultimately won the skirmish — Soundwave wiped Meadows' tapes and the Constructicons personally laid the beatdown on Slag and the others. Grimlock advised him to take Sludge and Slag with him, as their muscle would come in handy against Devastator. The three Autobots made their way to Decepticon headquarters, avoiding best they could the many traps that lay before it. The trio then encountered a couple of Decepticon guards, but made short work of them. Once within Decepticon headquarters, they encountered Devastator. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to defeat the Decepticon gestalt, and were themselves taken prisoner. Some time later, Megatron took Slag and the others out of their cell to show them that the Autobots had agreed to surrender; on the Decepticons' doorstep was left a statue of Devastator, with a note attached explaining that it was a peace offering. The statue turned out to be a ruse however, and Autobot reinforcements burst forth from within it. Kickback and Ravage nearly managed to sneak up on Slag and Sludge, but Grapple and Gears intercepted the two Decepticons before they could harm the Dinobots. After some time on their own, the Dinobots wound up living in the Cascade Forest range in Oregon, some distance away from Mount St. Hilary. On the way, however, they found that the Decepticon had unleashed the living battle station known as Trypticon on the Autobots. When Grimlock joined the battle to protect an endangered human, Slag and the other Dinobots joined in the fight as well. Grimlock and the Dinobots started to let their new power go to their heads pretty soon. Grimlock started wearing a tin crown of all things, while Slag and the others began acting more like mob enforcers than Heroic Autobots. After the Autobot named Blaster went AWOL, Grimlock swore out a vendetta against him and even went so far as to cast some of Blaster's human acquaintances into space (albeit with space suits). When another Autobot named Sky Lynx intervened on the humans' behalf, the Dinobots chased him into an asteroid belt. The super-Decepticon known as Galvatron had become more and more of a threat to the Transformers, not only due to his raw power but also because of the time-warping effect his prolonged presence in the past was having. Slag was so bored while on look-out duty that he and Sludge began to fight. Distracted, he didn't notice Bombshell sneaking up on the Dinobots, which led to the Insecticon injecting a Cerebro-shell into each of them save Swoop. Slag and the Dinobots are ordered to go on a rampage, attacking Autobots and humans alike. If Swoop reports directly back to Autobot base about what transpired, the Autobots weigh multiple options on how to best stop the Dinobots' rampage.

As temperamental as he was, Slag at least had the sense to point out during the Underbase fiasco that the people of Tokyo were not well aware of Transformers as a whole, and possibly mistook the Dinobots for movie props. Unfortunately, this was right before the Dinobots had to deal with Starscream, and like his teammates, Slag got, well, slagged. Dark Star
If the Autobots choose to use Mirage's abilities against the Dinobots, Slag and the rest of the sub-group are tricked into believing Optimus is standing at the edge of Bandit Bluff's precipice, and charge for the Autobot leader. Their target turns out to be an illusion fabricated by Mirage, and the Dinobots are knocked unconscious by their fall, and subsequently freed of Bombshell's control.

Many months later, Grimlock managed to bring Slag and the other Dinobots back on-line using the Nucleon reservoirs of Hydrus Four. He filled the containment units in his shuttlecraft, hoping to bring back enoug Nucleon to revive the Ark's entire crew. ...All This and Civil War 2 Surprisingly enough, the returning Dinobots found the Ark empty, as Primus had teleported all Transformers from Earth to Cybertron to engage in final battle with Unicron. If the Autobots choose to use Windcharger's abilities against the Dinobots, the outcome of the Dinobots' and the rest of the Autobots' confrontation has two possible outcomes. If Windcharger uses his magnetic powers too close to the Dinobots, the powerful magnetic field sends Slag and the other Dinobots into convulsions before killing them. If Windcharger decides to use his magnetic powers from a greater distance, the Cerebro-shells are harmlessly extracted from the Dinobots. Later, Slag is celebrating with the Autobots when Grimlock recalls Bombshell announcing that controlling the Dinobots was only a part of the Insecticon's plan.

Optimus in turn can send Bumblebee, Skids and Sludge to investigate nearby electromagnetic activity. If he does, and Skids returns to Autobot base after the Decepticons has captured Bumblebee, Prowl suggests to send Slag and his ilk as undercover agents into the Decepticons' local operation. Prowl explains that the Decepticons are likely unaware that the Dinobots are no longer under Bombshell's control. If Optimus goes with this plan, Slag and the Dinobots successfully carry out their infiltration. When the time comes to engage the Decepticons, Slag proves himself invulnerable to Starscream's lasers, one of which bounces off his armour and back into Starscream's weapon, The Autobots successfully defeat the Decepticons thanks to the Dinobot's strategic placement.
After Prime died in the war, Grimlock was named Autobot commander once more. His first mission was to look for the Ark, which had gone missing after the Dinobots used the ship to clock Unicron in the jaw and crashed it. They didn't find the Ark, but Slag and the Dinobots fought a group of metallic demons who had been unearthed during the cataclysmic fight with Unicron. Still Life! Although Prowl was attempting to maintain a truce with the Decepticons, Grimlock and the Dinobots recognized how improbable that was. Therefore, while the peace talks were going on, Grimlock sent Slag and the other Dinobots to the Rad Zone to recover some hidden starships they had hijacked millions of years prior. It was a good thing he did, because the Decepticons betrayed the Autobots, leaving them stranded on the dying planet without transport off it otherwise. A Savage Circle Using a homing beacon he had planted on one of the Decepticon ships, Grimlock tracked them down to the planet Klo. The Autobots had been expected, however, and the Decepticon welcoming party annihilated the Autobot army. Within a short period of time, only five Autobots were left alive: Grimlock, Slag, Prowl, Kup and Blaster. They continued to fight on, regardless of the hopelessness of the situation, and their stubborn refusal to just lay down and die was rewarded. Optimus Prime arrived on Klo to turn the tide, thanks to his new Action Master body and the help of the Last Autobot, a powerful Transformer who revived the entire Autobot army with his powers. The Decepticons were driven from Klo, and the Autobots celebrated a true victory. End of the Road! (US)

If the Autobots choose to simply attack the Dinobots immediately and brutally, Slag ends up attacking Powerglide with a jet of fire. Slag was seen barrelling through the Decepticon forces like a living juggernaut. Autobot High Command soon learned this assault was only a distraction, however, engineered by Unicron himself who was reconstructing himself on the planet of Junk. When Smokescreen returned from Junk with this news, Rodimus Prime gathered Scattershot, Grimlock, and the rest of the Dinobots with him to make an assault on Junk. Slag was constructed without the necessary emotional dampers that would allow him to regulate his moods and rage. This fact made him unpleasant company at the best of times, but also caused a regular glitch in his circuits, turning him into a raging homicidal berserker for a brief period every four million years. Slag was the only Dinobot still able to transform at this time. When Grimlock received information that the Hydrus Four facilities had reopened and discovered a means of reversing Nucleonic changes, the Dinobots jumped at the idea. Despite Prime's half-hearted warnings, Slag and his teammates followed Grimlock back to Hydrus Four in the hopes of becoming Transformers once again. They were followed by the "exiled" Decepticons, however, and a battle with a huge native creature delayed the Dinobots long enough for Bludgeon's crew to get ahead of them and take over the Nucleon facility. The Dinobots were laid low by a Holocaust Trigger, overloading their sensory circuits so that they were helpless before the Decepticons. Cruelly tortured, the Dinobots were still left alive so that they could witness the rebirth of Megatron, thanks to the Nucleon infusions Bludgeon was feeding him. Slag and the Dinobots were fighting alongside Grimlock and a small group of Autobot firestormers when they uncovered the Cybertronian Empire and their terraforming measures. After calling in Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots, they became part of a major offensive against not only Jhiaxus and his ilk, but everything they represented. War Without End! Despite Prime serving as overall commander, however, Slag and his buddies were still Dinobots first and foremost. So when Grimlock wanted to take first strike action against Prime's orders, there was no question whom they'd follow. Slag and the others were captured almost immediately, though, and only escaped thanks to the timely intervention of Optimus Prime and his more loyal group of soldiers. {{storylink|Devices and Desires! Slag continued to fight alongside the Autobots with his Dinobot comrades, on both Earth and Ethos. The Gathering Darkness Escalation! Later, after the Autobots forged an alliance with the first-generation Decepticons against the Cybertronians, the Dinobots got into the spirit of things—they teamed up with Headstrong and Weirdwolf in a metal-munching contest to see who could chow down on the most Cybertronians.
The Dinobots launched an attack on Iacon, heading for Shockwave's Tower. Grimlock ordered Slag and the others to keep pushing forward as he made a side-trip to the smelting pits to personally confront Shockwave. Before they could reach their destination, the Dinobots were halted by the newly reawakened Omega Sentinels. In the final battle with the Swarm, Slag was seen arranging the alliance's defenses against the voracious creature. Slag, later renamed Slug, has been fighting for a long, long time. He learned his earliest values and what the world was like in the gladiator pits: it was him against the world and the world had to die so he wouldn't. The brutalisation took a deep toll on his psyche. The Transformers: Redemption

By the year 2007, Slag had lost control, slipping into a murderous berserker rage due to the infusion of Nucleon into his system. He was kept contained in the "Nursery". Natural Selection, Part One Grimlock began to tirelessly search for a cure for nucleon as he blamed himself for Slag's state. Loose Ends, Part 1
Slag joined the Primal Vanguard and first met Grimlock in a brig, after he'd shot his commanding officer in the back to convince him they were outflanked and had to make a frontal assault. Grimlock thought this made him an awesome, clear-thinking guy, and the two of them discussed forming their own semi-autonomous strike team, one that Slag declared would follow no rules. Maximum Dinobots issue 2 Apparently their new Dynobot unit ended up more amiable than he had hoped, however, as they went on to receive numerous commendations. Their time in the Vanguard came to an end after a mission to Cybertron's underground, during which they ran into powerful cyber-morphic predators and were forced to take on alt modes based on the monsters in order to survive. Grieving the loss of their comrade Skar and locked up for study by their superiors, the Dynobots deserted from the Vanguard. Underworld (IDW)

When Grimlock next sees Slag, it is back in the Nursery, where the other Dinobots have gathered to confront their leader for bringing Scorponox and his Gene Key to Cybertron. As his actions had been for the purpose of saving the Dinobots, Grimlock resisted the urge to defend himself. When Scorponok's troops interrupted the fight, though, Grimlock defended the Dinobots, which restored a measure of their respect for him. Natural Selection, Part Four With the still-feral Slag left behind at the Nursery, Grimlock and the other Dinobots joined another group of Autobots in retaking the Civil Defense Hub, securing Scorponok's Nucleon research in the process. The Donobots then confronted Scorponok at the Sonic Canyons, where Grimlock sacrificed himself, plummeting into the depths of the canyons locked in battle with the Decepticon. Natural Selection, Part Five

On the run, Slag and the other Dynobots began fighting in illegal pit fights once more. Megatron Origin issue 3 The Transformers: Redemption They were in the Ring of Trials in Ironfall when they witnessed Optimus Prime's rallying call for additional support against the Decepticon tyranny. Broadcast They responded to the call and joined the Autobots in the following battle for control of Cybertron, during which they took out a lot of tanks. Endgame They subsequently joined the Autobots, but struck out on their own again as they began to lose control of their hastily acquired alt modes, which was affecting their minds and threatening to transform them into mindless beasts for good. Unwilling to risk the lives of others, the Dynobots resorted to robbing to earn their way off-world where they could isolate themselves. Derelicts

The Autobots put Scorponok's research to use in short order, as Slag was in normal operation, alongside his remaining fellow Dinobots as they confronted Hot Rod following his disastrous address at Eugenesis Plaza. They expressed their desire to join Hot Rod on his mission to the Demon-infested underground, because they believed Grimlock was still alive and they would be able to find him. Slag emphasized that they would know if he were dead. The Dinobots' "blind, intuitive faith" stirred Hot Rod into action, and he accepted the Dinobots' aid. Destiny, Part One
During one of their heists, the Dynobots broke into the Toraxxis mega-refinery, intending to drain and sell the energon within. Wreckage (issue) When Grimlock began hurrying them along, Slag lost his temper, blamed him for their situation and walked out, but calmed down and returned to them in time to fight off some Decepticons also looking to steal from the refinery. Faces of Darkness As the Autobots arrived to fight off the Decepticons, the Dynobots retreated into the refinery, but were followed by Scorponok. As Grimlock dueled the 'con, he began to lose control and transform into his beast mode, forcing Slag and Swoop to intervene and calm him down. Rage (IDW) Following the destruction of the refinery, the Dynobots got sick of it all and convinced Grimlock to accept Optimus Prime's offer to help. Prey (issue)

The Dinobots soon tracked down Soundwave, but he proved too much for them to handle until Grimlock used his brain and brought the nearby cliff down, knocking them all offline. In the Transformers
Slag and the others were brought to Prime at Starsreach Spaceport, where a Decepticon attack caused Grimlock to transform and go berserk. Massacre His ensuing rampage caused the Dynobots to lose all faith in redemption, and they boarded a ship bound off-world then and there. Unleashed However, they changed their minds when Trypticon, the creator of the cyber-morphic predator, was unleashed upon Cybertron, and returned to help the Autobots fight it. Annihilation As they held off Trypticon's minions, Grimlock ended up devoured by the giant beast and the others began to lose hope, but Slag urged them to keep fighting in the belief that Grimlock could defeat it from the inside. And he was right! Once Trypticon was defeated, the Dynobots returned home with the Autobots with hope that their scientists could find a cure for their affliction. Belly of the Beast (issue) The efforts of Autobot science succeeded, and the Dynobots were purged of their beast mode rage in time to defend Iacon from a Decepticon invasion. Primacy issue 4

Slag was chosen by Grimlock to join his commando unit, and was with them in the Dark Ages when they split off to become the Lightning Strike Coalition. Upon learning that Jetfire was meeting with Shockwave in the Neutral Territories, Grimlock took the Dynobots to kill them for treason. The others, however, were more worried about the new Decepticon battlestation that was massacring the Prowl's Autobots (Slag didn't care about the bots, he wanted a piece of the action). Grimlock got pissed, poked Slag, and ordered him to follow his orders or get physical. Swoop finally convinced Grimlock to let them go while he went for Jetfire and Shockwave. After the battle, they discovered that someone had taken Grimlock and Jetfire, and there was no sign of Shockwave. When The Fallen was discovered, the LSC were forced into a temporary alliance with Shockwave's Decepticons to rescue Grimlock and the others.
As the war went on, Slag's contribution to the grand Autobot cause of freedom for all was to murder Decepticons who surrendered and play "kick the can" with severed heads. Maximum Dinobots issue 1 He constantly tried to deny the Dynobots were a team at all, saying they put the "un" into "unit" (and apparently he put the "lame" into "jokes"). Maximum Dinobots issue 2 Despite having been "cured" of the berserker rage their beast modes inflicted on them, Slag felt it never really left him and considered himself a monster. When Shockwave traveled to Earth, the Dynobots pursued him. Slag appeared to be the team's tech specialist, originating the idea of organic beast modes as a defense against energon overload. That's pretty innovative for a guy who spends most of his time thinking how better to kill everyone around him. Scorponok wanted Grimlock to join him, but Grimlock refused, fought Scorponok and escaped, vowing to find and rescue Slag and the other Dynobots. Making matters worse, Scorponok decided to reduce the programming remotely, at which point Slag shot Grimlock more and got enraged to find out Grimlock had set up a dead man's switch that nearly killed them without telling anyone. Slag even decided they had been a team after all and this was a betrayal. However, Grimlock silenced him by reminding Slag of what he wanted the Dynobots to be, and how what he did was following Slag's ethos exactly. Maximum Dinobots issue 2

Much later, after Shockwave's defeat, the Dinobots were ordered by Ultra Magnus to accompany Kup on a trip to establish a base on one of Cybertron's moons. The Route of All Evil
Grimlock took the opportunity to inform the others of the current situation and what they needed to do, but Slag and the others weren't going to fall in line so easily. In particular, Swoop expressed his anger and disappointment in Grimlock's actions and decided to leave on his own. Slag, Snarl, and Sludge departed as well, leaving Grimlock standing there and fuming. Scorponok had his Sunstreaker clone army attack Grimlock at this point and they did so with gusto, ignoring the other Dynobots. Seeing their leader besieged, Slag and the others decided, for better or worse, that they were still Dynobots and had to stick together. They set to the task of trashing Sunstreaker clones until they were surrounded and nearly overwhelmed. But the Monsterbots arrived on the scene, having been summoned by Grimlock earlier, and began to turn the tide. Slag was quite disbelieving that Grimlock would even think of calling upon Repugnus' crew for help, but that didn't stop him from continuing to wreck Sunstreaker clones. Maximum Dinobots issue 3

Realizing they didn't have the advantage anymore, the surviving Sunstreaker clones retreated. The Dynobots hitched a ride in the Monsterbots' ship and headed for Machination headquarters. Aboard the ship, Grimlock discussed the matter of payment with Repugnus as the other Dynobots discussed how distasteful they found the whole situation (And you know it had to be really distasteful if the Dynobots were grousing about it!). Slag kept quiet but appeared as annoyed as the others as Grimlock told them he had worked out a temporary alliance with the Monsterbots. But again, as annoyed as the other Dynobots were, it didn't stop them from leaping into battle after Grimlock when they arrived at Machination HQ. They were greeted by yet more Sunstreaker clones, and proceeded to go about demolishing them. Finally, the clones were switched-off when Hunter O'Nion disconnected the original Sunstreaker's head, thus robbing the Machination grunts of their ability to control the clone bodies. The badly-damaged Hot Rod arrived, having just escaped from Machination HQ and explained what had occurred to the Dynobots. Sludge began to celebrate their victory when he was suddenly blasted by Scorponok, who decided to take a personal hand in the battle. Maximum Dinobots issue 4

To top it off, Shockwave arrived on the scene, and quickly engaged Scorponok for the right to destroy the remaining Dynobots. With Sludge apparently dead, Grimlock told the others to retreat without him, as he was finally seeing the cost of his uncompromising attitude. Slag asked Hot Rod if he wanted to bolt with them, but Hot Rod declined. Slag, Snarl, and Swoop decided to cut out while the getting was good and headed due east to an extraction point where the Monsterbots were waiting. Upon arrival, Repugnus mentioned that they'd be good fits for the team, due to their apparent concern with self-preservation. This remark did not seem to sit well with Slag and the others and they decided to go back and help Grimlock. When they returned to the battlefield, they found that Scorponok had retreated and Grimlock was fighting Shockwave. What's more, Sludge had come back online, thanks to a spark-jump from Grimlock. They leaped into battle with Shockwave, even as Grimlock implored them to go find Scorponok. Grimlock managed to drag himself and Shockwave away from the others, giving the other Dynobots an opportunity to infiltrate the main Machination complex. They managed to find their way to the chamber where Scorponok had stored his original head, and engaged the Decepticon Headmaster in battle there. Hot Rod directed Swoop to sever the connections keeping Scorponok's original head functional. Swoop did so, and Scorponok was painfully disabled and left at the Dynobots' mercy. But before they could kill him, Ultra Magnus arrived and told them that Scorponok would instead be jailed and made to pay for his crimes. He also suggested that they quickly remove all Cybertronian technology from the facility and leave as soon as possible. Everyone was totally cool with this.

Six months after Shockwave's defeat, Slug was drinking at Maccadam's Old Oil House when Windblade stopped by to get info on Starscream. After the Firecons were proven innocent, Optimus Prime confronted Slug and accused him of the murders, claiming his war experiences and life on Starscream's Cybertron had made him snap. Slug took poorly to the accusation and attacked Prime, but their battle was interrupted by reports of yet another killing—this time of Autobots. Grimlock tried to break Slag's programming by reminding him of their shared past, which not only didn't work but got him set on fire.
Prime's remarks would linger with Slug for weeks afterwards. He began to drink more and more to blot out his pain, getting violent a lot of the time,The Transformers: Redemption and being pacified by the drink at other times, such as during a party to celebrate Cybertron's reunion with Caminus. Windblade vol. 2 issue 4 He took Chosen One Day to thank Blurr for the alcohol. Choose Me In his mind, that time they'd been 'turned into' beasts had just been showing the world what they really were. Barricade, who'd keep busting him, was disgusted at the waste of potential and how this person the Decepticons had feared so much could be so pathetic.

In a drunken rage, Slug tried to start a fight with two evangelists for Prime before being coaxed away by Swoop. (His antics almost crashed Sterling's faith) The Transformers: Redemption Conquerors Part 1: Aphelion He went back to the bar, started a massive fight, and was arrested by Barricade. That would just be a normal weekend except Barricade had a job for him: help him deliver some goods into the wilderness for the Camien politician Strafe and the Dinobots would get a nice briefcase of untraceable money Barricade had been "collecting" in his police duties. Slug was desperate enough to take this job, to the disgust of the others until he said he'd dob the crew into the Badgeless and take the money after they'd been killed! It was a good plan until Slug discovered that the secret cargo were twelve sparks for delivery to a former 'hot spot'.

Slug changed the plan and had his crew slaughtered the waiting coppers before they could see Barricade, Swift, and Strafe: now Barricade and his friends could return to the city, but the Dinobots would always be wanted cop killers. Slug considered that usual Dinobot work, doing the dirty stuff so the 'heroes' could stay clean. For the rest of the journey, Slug (thinking about the innocent sparks he'd once murdered) and the Dinobots fought off warped Sweeps and Badgeless, while he was left bitter when he discovered Swift was actually dating Barricade and Strafe couldn't grasp his disgust. After all, he'd done bad things in the war too. Slug said it wasn't the same (he knew it was).

Things came to a head when Bludgeon, who'd been making the Sweeps, attacked them at a contaminated energon site. Barricade and all the sparks were killed and Strafe transformed into a monstrous new form, just as Slug had once been. In a ferocious battle, the Dinobots defeated Bludgeon, Slug saved Swift in Barricade's name, and they learned the Alyon 'hot spot' had reactivated and Bludgeon had been 'experimenting' on it: without intending to, Slug had helped save the future of Cybertron. He did Barricade and Swift a solid by telling her to lie that the Dinobots had abducted them, Barricade had died doing heroic deeds, and she'd discovered the sparks. That done, he departed into the wilderness with the Dinobots (Strafe now in tow), feeling on an upswing. The Transformers: Redemption

In the end, Ultra Magnus canceled outstanding warrants he had on the other Dynobots when Grimlock (who had managed to disable Shockwave) took the fall and admitted that going rogue was completely his idea. Grimlock was satisfied that he managed to save Sludge and his team was online and together again. Slag and the others were seen repairing the Skyfire and preparing to leave Earth. Maximum Dinobots issue 5

Months later, Slug and the rest of the Dinobots were still tracking Bludgeon but kept coming up empty. Checking a cave on a hillside, they encountered the remains of numerous Sweeps where Bludgeon had been experimenting when an unseen sniper suddenly shot Slug twice in the back, narrowly missing his spark. Realizing that his combustion chamber had been damaged, Slug ordered the other Dinobots to retreat before he fatally exploded. Sometime prior to the Iron Ring's invasion of Cybertron, the experiments had succeeded in bringing Slug back to life, though he himself was unaware of the truth of his situation, simply believing he'd been healed from near-death. After Centurion had found the missing protoforms, Starscream lent Slug to Optimus Prime so they could track them down and turn the newborns over to him. The Dead Come Home, Part 1 (of 2) The Dead Come Home, Part 2 (of 2)

After traveling space for a few years, Slag and the newly dubbed "Dinobots" returned to a reborn Cybertron and joined Ironhide for a mission to find the Aerialbots who had gone missing in the wilderness. After a run-in with a ferocious turbofox, which the Dinobots dealt with in their usual fashion, they discovered signs of Transformer weaponry which made Ironhide suspicious that Megatron was still around. His behavior bothered Slag, who had respected his toughness but now saw him as just another regular Autobot. Ironhide explained that he had changed because of a vision of the future, which Slag could relate to, having himself become a Dynobot because of a vision. The night they set up camp, a battle suddenly broke out and ended with Slag and Swoop impaling Ironhide for reasons unknown. Dinobot Hunt
Though Slug managed to track down his former teammates, he fell under the influence of Bludgeon's Void Scepter and subsequently attacked them. The Dead Come Home, Part 1 (of 2) Though his friends managed to hold him back, Slug only regained his faculties once Starscream shattered the scepter. However, this didn't kill Ironhide and the Dinobots continued to fight each other. Eventually, they somehow stopped clashing among themselves and began to pursue Ironhide, who was saved thanks to the timely arrival of the combined form of the Aerialbots, Superion. Night and the City

[[Flint (G.I. Shortly thereafter, the destroyed Cybertron's survivors arrived on Earth and a war council was convened inside Trypticon to assess Unicron's threat. Slug was present at the council and was chastised by Trypticon after he expressed his reluctance at working with so many former adversaries. *Slag had the preliminary name of Tricerabot.
*Slag's original toy was originally a Diaclone Dinosaur Robo Triceratops. In the Diaclone lore, this dinomech was a pilotable vehicle that could travel at speeds up of to 250 kilometers per hour and was designed for grasslands operation and melee combat. It also had a slightly different color scheme for its robot-mode bits.
*The stock photos on Slag's box show him with colors closer to the cartoon: His head, hands, and back hinge are cast in red plastic and the legs are cast in white plastic. The Canadian release of Slag actually came in these colors. His horns are also chromed rather than bare red due to the mockup/prototype not needing to change them to soft plastic for safety reasons.

*The overall design and transformation sequence of the original Slag toy served as the basis for Horn Geist, one of four recurring villainous henchmen on the Takara/Sunrise co-production Brave Exkaiser. In what might be called a vision of things to come, the four "Geisters" were once briefly fused into a single robot called "Mad Geister" (マッドガイスター Maddogaisutā). However, because each Geister controlled a portion of the combined body—and, aside from Ptera Geist, they had the accumulated brain power of a Froot Loop—this ended rather badly. It is also the reason why Slag is referred to now as Slug in Fall of Cybertron. The original Snarl has yet to comment on the matter.
*In the G1 cartoon, Neil Ross's portrayal of Slag was rarely consistent, frequently fluctuating in pitch between episodes, until it began steadily raising in pitch at a consistent rate. By the time of his final appearance in Call of the Primitives, Slag's voice had hit a comically high register.

This subject of this article goes by multiple names that apply to other articles as well. See Slag (disambiguation), Slug (disambiguation), Snarl (disambiguation).
Slag is an Autobot Dinobot from the Generation 1 continuity family.
His name is a swear word. Just the way he likes it.

Slag (aka Slug[Note]) is the Dinobot most likely to live up to the team's bad reputation.

Me Slag no like anything.

One angry mother slagger!

S.O.S. Dinobots

I know he's a raging sociopath... but he's so cute!

One of Slag's greatest weaknesses was his hostility, and Megatron was able to use this to his advantage, turning the Dinobots against Optimus Prime. After the Dinobots took down the Autobot leader, Slag was eager to finish off a defeated Prime, but was stopped by Grimlock. A new pair of Dinobots, Snarl and Swoop, stalled the old trio until the unstable meteor nearby exploded. Witnessing Optimus Prime valiantly save Grimlock from the explosion, the Dinobots decided that he was a good, passionate leader, and turned against Megatron as his squad escaped. War of the Dinobots

When Cybertron was being pulled into Earth's orbit, Slag pitched in to help stop the destruction. He and his fellow Dinobots created a moat that successfully captured an incoming tidal wave. The Ultimate Doom, Part 2 After that, the Dinobots were called upon to fight against Devastator. Heavy Metal War

Hound and Bumblebee had trouble teaching Slag and the other Dinobots how to play football. However, when the Autobots needed help to stop the Decepticons and King Nergill's attack on Washington, D.C., the Dinobots responded quickly. After the battle, Slag pitched in by using his fire breath to repair the Washington Monument. He came to Sub-Atlantica with the other Autobots, where he raised hell with his fellow Dinobots.Atlantis, Arise!

The Dinobots' powers proved invaluable when they needed to save Optimus Prime from rogue vehicles. Slag transformed into Triceratops mode and melted them down. Day of the Machines

After practicing his "fire stuff", Megatron arrived and using fear, led a pack of dinosaurs to push the Dinobots into a tar pit. Dinobot Island, Part 1 However, they managed to get out, and Slag used his fire breath to get the tar off his comrades. Dinobot Island, Part 2

H-hey! That's my funny circuit!

When the Dinobots carelessly reverted to robot mode, an explosion knocked them down. Back at the base, Ratchet, Hoist and Wheeljack were able to repair them after countless hours of work. But after the Dinobots heard Optimus send them out for another mission, they had enough. Slag was sick of taking orders and decided to take orders from Grimlock only, and the Dinobots left the Ark. However, when Carly informed the Dinobots that the Autobots were low on cybertonium, Slag refused to help out, but Grimlock dragged him to Cybertron anyway, since they would be away from the Autobots. Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1 When they reached Cybertron, Slag rammed Shockwave and then tried to turn him into a chew-toy. For this, the logic-driven Decepticon altered the Dinobots' memory circuits and put them to work in the Cybertonium Pit. Two squishies ended up saving them. Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 2

He may be in favour of grisly murder, but no one could ever accuse Slag of not having manners.

During the Battle of Autobot City, the Dinobots battled Devastator. Slag was the only one that managed to get a hit on Devastator, ramming into him at full speed. After evacuating Autobot City in the wake of Galvatron's attack, the Dinobots refused to leave, and Kup was forced to push Slag into the ship. Possibly to avoid being killed, Kup told the Dinobots about one of his encounters with an Ick-Yak. The Dinobots, along with Kup and Hot Rod, were shot down and crashed on Quintessa. The Dinobots searched for the two Autobots, with Grimlock believing they were close by, but Slag disagreed. They started hurling insults, and things might have turned violent, had Wheelie not appeared and pointed them in the right direction. He and Sludge broke down a door as Sharkticons prepared to execute the Autobots, giving a belated "Excuse me!" to a Quintesson prosecutor—who was being crushed under the combined weight of Slag, Sludge, and the door. Later, Slag literally burned the butt of a god. In the aftermath of Unicron's defeat, Slag watched as Rodimus Prime gave a triumphant speech to the assembled Autobots. The Transformers: The Movie Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1

Slag’s involvement in these events, or events mostly similar, were also chronicled in the comic mini-series "Transformers: The Animated Movie" and the storybook "Transformers the Movie."

An erroneous account placed Slag on planet Goo during a Decepticon attack. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4 After dinosaur transform static was left in the wake of several thefts, Slag and the other Dinobots were lined up as possible suspects. The culprit was actually Trypticon and Slag traveled to Carbombya with his fellow Autobots to bring the Decepticons to justice. Thief in the Night

The Dinobots were bathing in Cybertron and offered to let Grimlock join their fishing game. Grimlock politely declined, and later Slag declared that "Grimlock no fun" when Grimlock had his miraculous intelligence boost. Grimlock's New Brain

Slag was one of the Primitives who were called by Primacron's assistant to battle Primacron's newest creation, Tornedron. When Grimlock was believed destroyed when Trypticon crashed on him, Slag took command of the Dinobots. He came up with an incredibly innovative strategy—lead the Dinobots away until he got a better idea. Hun-Gurrr thought it was the best idea yet. After Tornedron dispatched the other Primitives, Slag and the Dinobots attacked him, only to have their energy sucked from them. Fortunately, Grimlock survived Trypticon's weight and destroyed Tornedron, fixing everything. Call of the Primitives

Rodimus vs. Cyclonus

[edit]

After blasting off of Quintessa aboard one of its ships, Slag and the other Dinobots huddled around Kup near the vessel's control panel. Slag stood about, muted, as the spacecraft came under assault from Cyclonus. Thanks to Kup and Hot Rod, they managed to escape their attacker, and the group later made their way to the planet Junk. Wings Universe

[edit]
Wings Universe is based on the Generation 1 cartoon, but deviates from it in cosmetic ways and continuity points.

Together with Hot Rod and Kup, the Dinobots were on board a shuttle fleeing from Cyclonus, Scourge and the Sweeps, though they were more concerned about hearing one of Kup's war stories than being under attack. When they found temporary safety inside a nebula, Kup relented and told them about the time he was in the Elite Guard and fought on Beta-Nine. Eventually the Decepticons found them, but Slag and the other Dinobots were so angry about the interruption that they made short work of the attackers. Wings of Honor

Ask Vector Prime

[edit]

Deviations

[edit]

Deviations

When Sideswipe learned that his "twin Autobot" had been captured by Devastator, he swore to rescue Sunstreaker himself. Slag participated in the battle that ensued, which eventually ended in a victory for the Autobots. Slag takes on the only guy as kill-happy as him.

When Optimus learned from Cosmos that the Decepticons were razing a human village to build a fuel plant in its place, he had the Dinobots hide within the other Autobots' vehicle modes to sneak up on the enemy. Once they were in close enough proximity to Shockwave and his minions, the Dinobots were released and the battle against the evil robots commenced. Kickback and Ravage nearly managed to sneak up on Slag and Sludge, but Grapple and Gears intercepted the two Decepticons before they could harm the Dinobots. After Shockwave had been tied up and loaded into Long Haul's open-box bed, Slag shoved them both down a pit so Grimlock could cover them with quick-drying cement, trapping the Decepticons. The Autobot Spy in the Sky

Slag and the rest of the Dinobots gathered around Grimlock as Hot Rod explained to them that he was being chased by a squad of Decepticons. Hot Rod then took off towards Autobot City to warn Ultra Magnus while the Dinobots headed to confront the Decepticons. In the battle that ensued, Slag spewed his firebreath at Buzzsaw. Then Starscream snuck up on him and injured the Dinobot with a couple of well-placed shots. Luckily, at this stage of the battle, Autobot reinforcements were arriving. Ratchet headed straight for Slag and tended to his wounds. Battle at Oil Valley

Slag and the rest of the Dinobots accompanied Hot Rod, Kup and Arcee on a space-faring mission. Though Kup warned Slag not to overload the ship, Grimlock ignored him, reasoning that he didn't want to make a second trip. The ship wound up malfunctioning, and they crash-landed on the planet Quintesson. There, they encountered Wheelie, who warned them about the planet's evil inhabitants. They soon encountered a few Quintessons leading their Sharkticon soldiers to apprehend them. Slag melted a bunch of them into puddles of molten metal with his fiery breath. After the Quintessons had been defeated, the Autobots left the planet in the ship that had once been piloted by Wheelie's parents. The Story of Wheelie, the Wild Boy of Quintesson

Dinobots Strike Back

[edit]
The following summarizes one or more multipath adventures. Details vary depending on the paths taken in-story. See the book's page for information on alternate paths.

If the Autobots choose to simply attack the Dinobots immediately and brutally, Slag ends up attacking Powerglide with a jet of fire. He is brought down when Swoop fires a missile near him, causing Slag to tumble over and his Cerebro-shell to come loose. This leads to the Autobots realizing they can knock the Cerebro-shells out of the Dinobots, and the whole team is freed from mind-control.

If Swoop chooses to stay and fight Bombshell instead of reporting back to base after the Dinobots have become Bombshell's slaves, and successfully defeats the Insecticon, Slag is freed along with the other Dinobots. Whatever other choices are made in this path, Slag stays unaware of what has transpired, his memory a blank during the mind-control. Dinobots Strike Back

Slag was chosen by Grimlock to join his commando unit, and was with them in the Dark Ages when they split off to become the Lightning Strike Coalition. On one of the group's missions, they managed to steal a plenty of energon from Starscream and his Predacons. Fragmentation Upon learning that Jetfire was meeting with Shockwave in the Neutral Territories, Grimlock took the Dynobots to kill them for treason. The others, however, were more worried about the new Decepticon battlestation that was massacring Prowl's Autobots (Slag didn't care about the bots, he wanted a piece of the action). Grimlock grew angry, poked Slag, and ordered him to follow his orders or get physical. Swoop finally convinced Grimlock to let them go while the latter went for Jetfire and Shockwave himself. Revelation

After the battle, Slag's group discovered that someone had taken Grimlock and Jetfire, and there was no sign of Shockwave. Confrontation When it was discovered that The Fallen was behind Grimlock's disappearance, the LSC were forced into a temporary alliance with Shockwave's Decepticons to put an end to the ancient Transformer's diabolical scheme. Despite the truce, Slag still decked Shrapnel. Nobody cared. Ultimately, The Fallen's plan to bring a greater, more malevolent force to Cybertron was foiled by the power of Primus himself. Conflagration

Afterwards, Ultra Magnus managed to unite the Autobots once more, and under his leadership gained a significant hold over Cybertron's resources and territories. This eventually forced the Ultracons and Shockwave's Decepticons to sign a peace treaty with the Autobots. Slag and the other Dynobots were posted as perimeter guards during the peace talks, in anticipation for any attacks that might come their way. Sure enough, Starscream and his Predacons struck by sending in a pair of shuttles filled with neutronium plasma to crash into Tyger Pax, where the treaty was being signed. Slag and his teammates were unable to halt the shuttles, ending any hope of an easy truce. The dramatic return of Megatron with his cloned Aerospace Extermination Squadron ended any ideas of truce at all. The Age of Wrath

After the Ark and the Nemesis crash-landed on Earth, the Dynobots followed the Insecticons there. They trounced the Insecticons, who subsequently played dead until Grimlock and Slag got bored and wandered off. Extermination However, the Dinobots became trapped in stasis lock. After awakening, Megatron captured the Dinobots, using their imprisonment to force Grimlock to side with the Decepticons. Prime Directive issue 3 Grimlock freed them after Shockwave captured Megatron and Optimus Prime. Brothers' Burden Using a stolen Decepticon shuttle, the DInobots traveled back to Cybertron, finding it under the totalitarian rule of Shockwave. Octane was the first to come upon the group once they had made planet-fall, and poked Slag in the head calling him a "primitive" as he prepared to take him in. This only served to make Slag angry, and Octane was afterwards left without a body. Slag was keen on keeping Octane's head as a trophy, but Grimlock had him get rid of it before they started their rampage proper to disrupt Shockwave's rule. Cold War

Slag barely managed to send a distress call to Grimlock before being defeated. Passive Aggression

Much later, after Shockwave's defeat, the Dinobots were ordered by Ultra Magnus to accompany Kup on a trip to establish a base on one of Cybertron's moons. The Route of All Evil

2005 IDW continuity

[edit]
First appearance: Spotlight: Shockwave

Slag, later renamed Slug, has been fighting for a long, long time. He learned his earliest values and what the world was like in the gladiator pits: it was him against the world and the world had to die so he wouldn't. The brutalisation took a deep toll on his psyche. Redemption

Maximum Dinobots #2 Apparently their new Dynobot unit ended up more amiable than he had hoped, however, as they went on to receive numerous commendations. Underworld

On the run, Slag and the other Dynobots began fighting in illegal pit fights once more. Megatron Origin #3 The Transformers: Redemption They were in the Ring of Trials in Ironfall when they witnessed Optimus Prime's rallying call for additional support against the Decepticon tyranny. Derelicts

During one of their heists, the Dynobots broke into the Toraxxis mega-refinery, intending to drain and sell the energon within. Wreckage When Grimlock began hurrying them along, Slag lost his temper, blamed him for their situation and walked out, but calmed down and returned to them in time to fight off some Decepticons also looking to steal from the refinery. Rage Following the destruction of the refinery, the Dynobots got sick of it all and convinced Grimlock to accept Optimus Prime's offer to help. Prey

Belly of the Beast The efforts of Autobot science succeeded, and the Dynobots were purged of their beast mode rage in time to defend Iacon from a Decepticon invasion. Primacy #4

Chili night ends in tragedy.

As the war went on, Slag's contribution to the grand Autobot cause of freedom for all was to murder Decepticons who surrendered and play "kick the can" with severed heads. Maximum Dinobots #1 He constantly tried to deny the Dynobots were a team at all, saying they put the "un" into "unit" (and apparently he put the "lame" into "jokes"). Maximum Dinobots #2 Despite having been "cured" of the berserker rage their beast modes inflicted on them, Slag felt it never really left him and considered himself a monster. In a particularly horrific moment, he incinerated sparks so they could never be born as Decepticons. Redemption

The Dynobots were involved with the battle of Varas Centralus, where their actions were as brutal and horrific as any Decepticon's. The Killing Jar The Dynobots fought a campaign on another alien planet that claimed the lives of thousands of Autobots and ultimately left the world's native population nearly extinct. Slag verbally lashed out at Optimus Prime for his seeming detachment from the cost the war was exacting and Grimlock had to step in to prevent a physical altercation. As Slag stalked off, Grimlock bluntly told Optimus that he agreed with his fellow Dynobot and felt Prime only cared about results. Post

Slag knows that Grimlock is the harshest critic of his light sculpting.

Slag and the other Dynobots followed Grimlock to revenge themselves against Shockwave, who blew up a cache of energon they had stolen. When Shockwave traveled to Earth, the Dynobots pursued him. Slag appeared to be the team's tech specialist, originating the idea of organic beast modes as a defense against energon overload. That's pretty innovative for a guy who spends most of his time thinking how better to kill everyone around him. Sadly, it did not protect the Dynobots from Shockwave's energy blasts, which melted the artificial skin and caused the Dynobots to go into stasis lock due to excessive Energon radiation. Due to a dead man's switch, the Dynobots' ship blasted a volcano that buried everyone in molten lava. Spotlight: Shockwave

The Dynobots were eventually excavated by Skywatch, and though Grimlock was the first to be brought back online, he was freed from Skywatch's control through a virus implanted by a Machination spy (under orders from Scorponok). Scorponok wanted Grimlock to join him, but Grimlock refused, fought Scorponok and escaped, vowing to find and rescue Slag and the other Dynobots. Scorponok, however planned to take control of the Dynobots himself and use them to assassinate Grimlock. Spotlight: Grimlock

This is revenge for the Triceratops always losing the fights in the movies.

Skywatch activated Slag, and in a test run, had him melt a tank. When Grimlock showed up in Fallon, he and the other Dynobots were sent to intercept him. Maximum Dinobots #1 Grimlock tried to break Slag's programming by reminding him of their shared past, which not only didn't work but got him set on fire. Maximum Dinobots #2

Maximum Dinobots #3

The list that Slag keeps of people who tick HIM off simply reads "EVERYONE".

Maximum Dinobots #4

"You're jerks, but do you have what it takes to be SUPER-jerks?"

Maximum Dinobots #5

"You mean 'Frack you and everyone around you!' isn't a rational philosophy??"

With Grimlock gone, Slag took on the role of leader of the team. After traveling space for a few years, he and the newly dubbed "Dinobots" returned to a reborn Cybertron and joined Ironhide for a mission to find the Aerialbots who had gone missing in the wilderness. After a run-in with a ferocious turbofox, which the Dinobots dealt with in their usual fashion, they discovered signs of Transformer weaponry which made Ironhide suspicious that Megatron was still around. His worried behavior bothered Slag, who had respected his toughness but now saw him as just another regular Autobot. Ironhide explained that he had changed because of a vision of the future, which Slag felt had a degree of truth to it. The night they set up camp, the Dinobots were overcome by an alien influence and began fighting amongst themselves, causing Slag and Swoop to impale Ironhide. Dinobot Hunt

However, this didn't kill Ironhide and the Dinobots continued to fight each other. Eventually, they somehow stopped clashing among themselves and began to pursue Ironhide, who was saved thanks to the timely arrival of the combined form of the Aerialbots, Superion. Night and the City With everyone gathered in one place, the influence that had made the Dinobots aggressive and created Superion ceased to affect them. Second Exodus On returning to Iacon, the group found the city under attack by Megatron Before the Dawn Quick to join the fray, Slag took the streets and fought Needlenose and Turmoil. Plan for Everything Though the Autobots were victorious, Starscream was able to turn the neutral population against them and have both factions banished from the city. Heavy Is the Head

Slug bows to kid appeal.

Out in the wilderness, the Dinobots defended the Autobot convoy from the approaching Constructicons until the Decepticon team revealed their good intentions. After setting up camp, they actually got along quite well with the Constructicons, who shared their interest in wrecking things and chugging energon. Second Exodus During his time in camp, Slag was informed by Arcee that his name held an offensive meaning, prompting him to change it to "Slug". No Exit When a mysterious light appeared in the wilderness, Slug had the Dinobots go on the offensive, ignoring Bumblebee's orders to wait and observe. His attack plans were then shelved when the light turned out to be heralding the arrival of the giant Necrotitan. Dark Dawn Fed up with Slug's continued attitude, Bumblebee gave him an ultimatum: either follow orders or leave the battlefield. Surprised by the little 'bot's courage, Slug begrudgingly fell into line and had the Dinobots aid in trying to contain the Necrotitan. Black Metal A brief battle occurred when a group of Decepticons led by Soundwave arrived at the scene, but was interrupted when the Titan emitted a deadly energy wave that injured and corroded many combatants, including Slug. Winners & Losers Autobots and Decepticons alike stopped fighting while their leaders tried to work out what was going on. Into the Abyss

A murderous brute yes, but don't ever accuse him of not being woke.

Slug was taken to safety by the other Dinobots, complaining that he couldn't participate in the attack on Shockwave's base. When the Necrotitan began making its way towards Iacon, the Dinobots tried to slow it down to no effect. No Exit They and the other Autobots then retreated to Iacon, having no choice but to try and defend the city from the giant. Burning Bright Slug was cured from the death wave's effects when the Necrotitan was brought down by Metroplex. Finis Temporis In celebration of the Titan's defeat, Slug went to Swerve's to drink and sing alongside both Autobots and Decepticons. The Becoming The peace was brief, as an army of Ammonites then invaded Cybertron on Shockwave's orders, forcing the Autobots back into action. Black Planet Slug was ordered by Ironhide to drive the invaders out of the city, but in the chaos of battle the Dinobot couldn't even tell where the city limits were. Once the battle was won, he watched Megatron disembark the Lost Light wearing an Autobot insignia. ...And the Damage Done

Six months after Shockwave's defeat, Slug was drinking at Maccadam's Old Oil House when Windblade stopped by to get info on Starscream. After a couple of drinks he was all too willing to tell her what he thought about that jerk. A 'Bot and Her City He was still there two days later when Windblade showed up in search of Waspinator, A Long Way Down and was taken along for the ride when Windblade brought several bar patrons with her to Metroplex's insides to serve as witnesses to Starscream's illegal "mine" within. As they were attacked by three Terrorcons on arrival, the Dinobot fought Rippersnapper until Starscream himself showed up with his Badgeless thugs and had the group captured. They were broken out of jail by Chromia, after which Slug and Blurr remained behind to keep Starscream at bay while Windblade made her escape. Windblade vol. 1 #3 Slug pinned Starscream to a wall, but the Seeker got out of his grip by blowing him away with a missile. Windblade vol. 1 #4

Some time later, Slug helped investigate the murders of three Decepticons in the slums outside Metroplex, although he cared little about the case seeing them as karmic retribution for the Decepticons. City of Steel Following more killings, Slug and the Dinobots stood guard at the murder site where they flung threats at an angry Decepticon mob placing the blame on Optimus Prime. Fight or Flee Suspecting the Firecons to be the culprits, Prime, Starscream and Windblade had a team including the Dinobots take the trio down, which Slug and his pals did with gusto. Quest for Fire

Slug believed this proved his innocence, but Prime wouldn't relent, reminding him of his team's war crimes on Varas Centralus and telling him his stubborn adherence to wartime thinking was dividing Cybertron and representing everything wrong with their race. The Killing Jar That night, an infuriated Slug began plotting to kill Prime, only for him and his team be caught in an explosion, having become the killer's latest targets. As it turned out, Prime had only shouted about their crimes in order to lure out the culprit, the criminal killer Sandstorm, but had also arranged a trap door to open beneath them when the bomb struck, saving their lives. Forever Is a Long Time Coming

Prime's remarks would linger with Slug for weeks afterwards. He began to drink more and more to blot out his pain, getting violent a lot of the time,Redemption and being pacified by the drink at other times, such as during a party to celebrate Cybertron's reunion with Caminus. Windblade vol.2 #4 He took Chosen One Day to thank Blurr for the alcohol. Choose Me In his mind, that time they'd been 'turned into' beasts had just been showing the world what they really were. Barricade, who'd keep busting him, was disgusted at the waste of potential and how this person the Decepticons had feared so much could be so pathetic.

In a drunken rage, Slug tried to start a fight with two evangelists for Prime before being coaxed away by Swoop. (His antics almost crashed Sterling's faith) Redemption Aphelion He went back to the bar, started a massive fight, and was arrested by Barricade.

Redemption

A Dinobot is resurrected with a mutated spark through unholy alien science. Hmmmmm.

His corpse was recovered by Starscream, who wondered what might happen if it were given a mutated Sweep spark recovered from Bludgeon's lab. Salvation

The Dead Come Home, Part 1 The Dead Come Home, Part 2

Though Slug managed to track down his former teammates, he fell under the influence of Bludgeon's Void Scepter and subsequently attacked them. The Dead Come Home, Part 1 Though his friends managed to hold him back, Slug only regained his faculties once Starscream shattered the scepter. Himself again, Slug attempted to apologize only for Swoop to embrace him, dismissing casual attempts at murder as their version of a greeting. Though Slug didn't think highly of Optimus turning Trypticon into Earth's embassy on Cybertron, he conceded that they needed to be unified for whatever came next. The Dead Come Home, Part 2

When Onyx Prime returned to Cybertron and felled Metrotitan, Marissa Faireborn tried to call the Dinobots into action. Though Slug was ready and willing to go, Trypticon himself overruled that decision and space-bridged them all to Earth. The Hallowing Taking refuge atop Mount Rushmore, Slug perched upon Trypticon's head and pondered whether their story was ending, bemoaning the fact that the Dinobots had not been the ones to fell the recently-slain Constructicons. When Trypticon offered his sympathies, Slug declared him his favourite "robot space tyrannosaurus." Unstopped and Unstoppable

After Jazz had surrendered himself to the human authorities so Rom could make use of Trypticon's space bridge, the Dinobots began petitioning for their friend's release only for the Colonist Soldiers to come barging in on a half-cocked rescue mission. Though the Dinobots attempted to restraint the youths, Gimlet forgot his strength and fatally wounded Mainframe. In a rage, Slug cleaved the Eukarian in twain prompting Sky Lynx to attack the Dinobot commander. Slug's retaliation left him open for Slide to attack him, denouncing him as no better than Optimus. Reminded of his issues with the Prime, and his promise to protect the new generation of Cybertronians, Slug was overcome with horror at his actions. Before he could fully process his misdeed, the Junkions returned with their Sharkticon army only for Jazz to finally get everyone to stand down. The tentative peace was ruined a second later when Unicron appeared in the skies above Earth. Time Will Rust

Flint blamed the Transformers for Unicron's presence, which Slug took offense to, angrily countering that Earth was now the home of the new generation of Cybertronians that the Dinobots had been protecting. A furious Slide in turn pointed out that Slug had just killed Gimlet- a young Transformer just like the ones he had claimed to be looking out for. Shortly thereafter, the destroyed Cybertron's survivors arrived on Earth and a war council was convened inside Trypticon to assess Unicron's threat. Slug was present at the council and was chastised by Trypticon after he expressed his reluctance at working with so many former adversaries. After preparations had been made, everyone went their separate ways to await the final offensive against Unicron, and Slug once again took up his perch atop Trypticon's head until it was time to enact the plan. Slug and the other Dinobots boarded Trypticon, who space-bridged them into Earth's orbit to confront Unicron directly alongside many others. A Sunrise Dark Assembly

Slug fought against Unicron's Maximal army in orbit with the Dinobots, but was again called out by Slide in the middle of the battle for killing Gimlet. Slug tried to argue the point, but Swoop pointed out that Bludgeon's Worldsweeper had pushed past their forces and was headed into Earth's atmosphere. Slide swallowed her indignation and joined Slug and the others as Sky Lynx ferried them back down to the planet's surface. Once they arrived, the Dinobots eagerly leaped into battle against Bludgeon's massive ship, joined by the Torchbearers, who combined into Victorion and allowed Slug and his team to infiltrate the Worldsweeper. Making their way to the bridge, the Dinobots confronted Bludgeon, and Slug immediately took the fanatic's Void Scepter out of play. With the Worldsweeper set on a collision course with the White House, the Dinobots fought Bludgeon and his Maximals to the bitter end. Even with Sludge and Snarl both having fallen, Slug grappled with Bludgeon right up until the moment of impact. His last realization was that if the future was to be a peaceful one, people like him and Bludgeon had to be gone from it, and both of them died when the Worldsweeper crashed. Ceremony

At a time when their group was the Lightning Strike Coalition, Slug and Snarl were on a mission to find their leader Grimlock, who had disappeared. While searching the Sea of Rust, they were ambushed by Hardshell and the Insecticons. Slug and Snarl were overwhelmed and taken prisoners to Shockwave's lab, where they are reunited with the rest of their squadron. Shockwave experimented on the Lightning Strike Coalition, transforming them into the monstrous Dinobots. This backfired on the Decepticon scientist, however, when the Dinobots used their newfound power to rise up against Shockwave and thrash his lab. Rescue the King

Following the disappearance of Grimlock and Swoop, Slug took charge of the remainder Dinobots, claiming he wouldn't obey orders from anyone else. The trio set out for the Decepticon base, and when Optimus tried to stop them, they attacked him. Wheeljack attempted to use his magnetic inducer on Slug and scanned the Dinobot. Having dealt with Optimus, the Dinobots continued towards the Decepticon base until the Autobots managed to overwhelm and imprison them. Day of the Dinobots - Part 1 The trio were released during a night raid by Grimlock and Swoop. The five Dinobots marched on the Decepticon base, but were defeated by Shockwave, Ramjet, and Ratbat. The process it takes to build up a fiery (3,000 degrees centigrade plus) blast and reduce an enemy to molten slag is hardly energy-efficient, but he doesn't care. It's firepower well spent in his book. As he often says, "I have no need for friends, even less for enemies." Slug Bio

Slag had a few head-on encounters with the Predacon Headstrong.

Slug was a bad-tempered Dinobot who spent most of his time arguing with his comrades. Although he put up a cantankerous front, Slug was loyal to his comrades and even sometimes filled in for Grimlock while the Dinobot leader was otherwise indisposed. In his alternate mode, Slug was capable of spraying jets of superheated molten metal capable of melting raw cybernite. Technorganic Secrets

Notes

[edit]
 • Slag had the preliminary name of Tricerabot.[1]
 • The European exclusive Action Master Decepticon Charger cribs Slag's quote, his function, much of his bio, and his Tech Specs. Whether there was any relation intended between the characters or if the copywriters just got lazy is unknown.
 • The overall design and transformation sequence of the original Slag toy served as the basis for Horn Geist, one of four recurring villainous henchmen on the Takara/Sunrise co-production Brave Exkaiser, voiced by the late Daisuke Gori. In a more successful (if not also prescient) later development, the Geisters learned to merge in groups of two, with Horn Geist forming the upper body of "Hormor" (ホーマー Hōmā).
 • In the G1 cartoon, Neil Ross's portrayal of Slag was rarely consistent, frequently fluctuating in pitch between episodes, until it began steadily raising in pitch at a consistent rate. By the time of his final appearance in Call of the Primitives, Slag's voice had hit a comically high register.
 • Slag's name is also a popular Cybertronian expletive. That just seems right, for some reason. In The Real World, Slag is also a term of abuse in the United Kingdom and some parts of Europe, which forced Hasbro to release toys (such as an Animated toy designed with G1 Slag in mind) under the name Snarl in the late 2000s to avoid possible problems with cultural sensitivities. The original Snarl has yet to comment on the matter. Fall of Cybertron solved the issue without causing an identity crisis by calling the character "Slug", a name that stuck with subsequent incarnations and was eventually applied to the original Slag as well.
