Ratchet is the Autobots' Chief Medical Officer. If something's broke, he can fix it. Ratchet is known for his irreverent bedside manner; he loves having a good time, and his party-loving nature has given him a dry wit. He is not a particularly mighty warrior, which sometimes leads him to believe that he is expendable. Optimus Prime has trouble convincing Ratchet that this is far from the truth.

Although he's a healer, Ratchet often finds himself on the front lines of combat and, on occasion, the last hope the Autobots have. These pressures are sometimes too much for him to handle, but Ratchet ultimately never gives up.

Ratchet was one of the select Autobots chosen by Optimus Prime to travel aboard the Ark, and ended up in stasis lock for four million years at the base of Mount St. Hilary with the rest of the crew. Once the volcano exploded and the Transformers reactivated, Ratchet was rebuilt to transform into an ambulance.  He responded to Gears's complaining by telling him that at least he didn't have to fix everyone all the time!  Ratchet would rather be partying.  The Transformers (comic issue)

As their war against the Decepticons continued on Earth, Ratchet joined the Autobots' debate about how to deal with their dwindling fuel resources.  Thankfully, Bumblebee had located a human, Sparkplug Witwicky, who could help them convert fuel to a form usable by them, so the Ark was left in Ratchet's hands as the others left to meet with Bumblebee and his new human friends.  Ratchet noted sadly that without fuel, even his considerable skills were useless. Power Play!  While they were gone, Ratchet attended to the Ark.  During his attempts at repairs, he uncovered something interesting in its memory databanks, but Optimus Prime cut him off before he could explain.  Gears was badly damaged in the battle that followed, and his body was brought back to Ratchet for repairs.  After working on him for a short period of time, Ratchet was amazed that he could already speak.  Unfortunately, Gears had bad news; Sparkplug Witwicky had converted fuel for the Decepticons while he had been their prisoner!  Prisoner of War!

The Autobots were outraged at this, which upset Sparkplug so much that he suffered a heart attack.  Ratchet volunteered to driv Sparkplug and his son Buster to the hospital.    The Last Stand While Buster stayed at the hospital with his ailing father, Ratchet held fast to his oath to preserve life, an oath which made no distinction between organical or mechanical life, and spent long hours helping to ferry injured humans to and from the hospitalHis human drivers were alarmed to find this out after the fact.  Ratchet was happy to learn that Sparkplug, now able to speak, had told Buster that he'd poisoned the Decepticons' fuelWhile this conversation was taking place, his drivers were poking around his ambulance mode, trying to discover how he was talking.  After an angry, annoyed outburst, the humans fled.

Ratchet was the chief medical officer aboard the Ark and continued to serve in that capacity for Optimus Prime's forces on Earth during the mid-1980sHe formed something of a friendly rivalry with the human Sparkplug Witwicky, who often assisted him in his repairsIn 2005, Ratchet was killed by the Decepticons just prior to the Battle of Autobot CityHis body was interred on the Autobot Mausoleum, but it was ultimately destroyed in an explosion.

In a splinter timeline, Ratchet was eventually revived through means unknown, and in 2011, joined the Disaster Relief Team to aid Autobots caught in the destruction of Cybertron. By 2021, Ratchet had helped to restore Cybertron to its former state. In the 2030s, he joined his teammates in battling Grand Scourge.

Despite Buster's good news, Ratchet felt he should return to the Ark as swiftly as possible; no one there was responding to his communications.  Buster accompanied him, and en route tried to explain to Ratchet that the traffic signals were nonsentient and would not respond to his pleas. When a red light turned green, eventually, after Ratchet's attempts at persuasion, the Autobot admonished the child for his lack of communication skills.  But when Ratchet and Buster arrived at the Ark, they were horrified to discover Rumble and Frenzy standing sentry outside.  Buster, who was small enough to slip in unnoticed, snuck inside to investigate.   The New Order
The Special Teams
After crashing on Earth in the Ark and remaining dormant for millions of years, Ratchet, along with Sideswipe and Optimus, were the first Autobots to awaken after the Decepticons’ own resurrection. These three helped the other Autobots repair themselves with the aid of the Ark's computer. The Special Teams

Ratchet soon discovered, to his horror, that he was the last Autobot still functional on Earth, up against the entire Decepticon army. Covertly invading the Ark, he learned that even the mighty Optimus Prime had fallen. However, Prime's head, though detached, still functioned, and the Autobot Commander told Ratchet that he must rise up to meet this challenge. Ratchet did not believe he could; he was a doctor, not a warrior (damnit, Jim). Warrior School!  Buster later returned to Ratchet, looking like a fright, and told the Autobot that the Decepticons had taken over the Ark, and that their bodies were hung like meat from the ceiling!  Even crazier still was when Shockwave was seen carrying the defeated body of Megatron back into the Ark. Ratchet began to worry that he was the last Autobot alive.   The Worse of Two Evils!

Sideswipe was convicted of destroying the Nova Suspension Bridge and deactivated, despite his pleas of innoncence, in order to ease the strain on human/Autobot relations. Prowl became suspicious of the Decepticons being somehow involved, and discovered evidence that lead to the remote Carob Island. Ratchet accompanied Prowl, Windcharger, Hound, Bumblebee, and Brawn and headed to said island. Upon landfall, Prowl discovered a cave from where suspicious sounds were coming from. Leaving Bumblebee and Hound behind to guard the entrance, Prowl, Windcharger, Brawn, and Ratchet went inside. The Autobots exploring the cave came upon several Decepticon gophers and drilling machines gathering a rare ore for their evil masters. Working together, Ratchet and the others made short work of the Decepticon machines. When they exited the cave, however, they discovered that Bumblebee and Hound were missing. They were instead greeted by Madame Cee and her army of pig-robots. Madame Cee insisted that their friends were fine and brought the Autobots to her home, where she told them to rest and enjoy themselves. Prowl eventually discovered that Madame Cee was working for the Decepticons, and reactivated the captive Bumblebee and Hound. The Autobots learned that the Decepticons were forcing Cee to help build Autobot duplicates. After learning of the location of Megatron's temporary base on the island, Ratchet and the rest of the group entered it, finding themselves wandering in a vast, underground labyrinth. They finally came upon an open area, only to be captured in force cages by the Decepticons. Prowl managed to free the rest of the group, and Ratchet helped Brawn defeat Skywarp while the others dealt with Starscream and Megatron. Through a stroke of luck, the Autobots managed to escape Megatron's megamaze when they discovered that Ratchet's lubricant container had been leaking all day, thus leaving them a trail that led out of the facility. The Autobots returned to their headquarters where they were able to clear Sideswipes name, and presumably reactivated him. Deadly Paradise

Ratchet retro-fitted Skyfire with external fuel tanks in order to allow the Autobot superjet to reach a Decepticon satellite in Earth orbit that was beaming down heat and destruction thanks to a gigantic diamond lens. When Skyfire failed to destroyed his satellite and burned up on reentry upon falling back to Earth, Optimus ordered Ratchet to weld together a square-mile sheet of polished metal. This would be used in the Autobot's plan “B” in taking out the satellite. Satellite of Doom

Ratchet was no warrior, and he doubted what he could do to topple this new status quo, but still, Ratchet tried. In his weakened state, Megatron could not hope to defeat Shockwave and reclaim his leadership, but Ratchet approached him with a possible solution.  Ratchet knew how Shockwave had fallen 4 million years ago (having discovered this earlier within the Ark's memory databanks), and struck a deal, sealed by the Rite of Oneness: If Ratchet could defeat Shockwave, Megatron would relinquish Decepticon control of the Ark and its wrecked Autobot inhabitants.
When a boarding party encountered a time-delay booby-trap inside a Decepticon transport ship, two of its members were sent to Ratchet for repairs. When Continents Collide

Ratchet journeyed to the Savage Land, where the Dinobots had fought Shockwave to a stalemate, leaving all dormant in a tar pit prison. He dug up the Dinobots and repaired them. Soon after, he met with Megatron on a snowy ski slope and announced that he had fulfilled his half of the bargain; Shockwave was defeated. Megatron, of course, went back on his part of the deal and threatened to kill Ratchet. Ratchet declared that he knew all along Megatron would not hold up his end of the bargain and admitted that he had not, in fact, defeated Shockwave. The Dinobots sprung up out of the snow surrounding Megatron and fought him, but did not succeed. Megatron now stood alone, triumphant, mocking Ratchet and his lack of a warrior's edge. With nothing to lose, Ratchet charged Megatron, but he was ineffectual. However, the charge had loosened the ground on which Megatron stood, and the Decepticon leader fell off the cliff side and disappeared. Repeat Performance!
Ratchet was busy fixing up Slag inside the Dinobots’ secret base when Megatron's Thermo-borer burst through the wall of the medical room, activating the base's alarms. Though Megatron and Soundwave retreated immediately, Ratchet managed to plant a Memory Scrambler Mine on the Thermo-borer's hull. he then returned to fixing Slag, though he drew increasingly annoyed that repairs were taking too long, and distracting from his duty of reactivating the other Dinobots from their tar cocoons so they could join the Autobot ranks. Just as Ratchet finished up his repairs on Slag, the Dinobots’ headquarters began to tremble as the Crusher forced its way inside. Ratchet and Slag both ran to a safer spot. But the vibrations caused by the Crusher's entrance had inadvertently freed hundreds of Dinobots from their tar cocoons. Joining the newly activated robots, Ratchet beat back Megatron and Soundwave. Jaws of Terror

On their return trip to the Ark, Ratchet helped educate the Dinobots about human/Autobot relations by telling them the story of a recent battle with the Decepticons at a hydroelectric damDecepticon Dam-Busters! When they arrived, Ratchet and the Dinobots found the Ark defended by Guardian, an Autobot combat drone which had been reprogrammed by ShockwaveRatchet rescued the Dinobots from the powerful drone by remembering and exploiting one of its few weaknesses, an access port which could admit a fine laser. Ratchet then began the task of repairing the Autobots, placing priority on those whose command skills would be useful. This put him at odds with Dinobot leader Grimlock, who felt that the fallen Dinobot Swoop should be repaired first. The Wrath of Grimlock!

Ratchet was one of the many Autobots who followed Optimus into battle when it was discovered that the Decepticons were stealing fuel from all across the globe with the help of a molecular transfer device. He tended to Windcharger after their first battle against the Decepticons that day, and noted that the Autobots were running low on fuel, while the Decepticons' reserves were still plentiful. Ratchet helped Ironhide transfer some of his fuel to Windcharger and Jazz so that the more fuel-efficient Autobots could continue fighting. When the Autobots succeeded in capturing the molecular transfer device and turned its power on the Decepticons, Optimus trasked Ratchet with dismantling the machine afterwards, so that the Decepticons would never be able to use its power again. Summertime Coloring Book

After the destruction of Optimus Prime, Ratchet was not able to repair him. Unable to deal with his failure, Ratchet wandered off on his own during Optimus's funeral.  Ratchet decided that rather than moping, he should concern himself with the other damaged Autobots under his care, so he headed towards a junkyard to look for spare parts he could use. However, he was abducted in vehicle mode by the Mechanic and his accomplice Juan when the two thieves were found by the police. Ratchet revealed himself when they arrived at the Mechanic's hideout, but the Mechanic froze Ratchet with his own surgical weapons and headed for the Ark, intent on finding technology that would ensure he would never be threatened by the police again. When he had unfrozen, Ratchet followed the human back to the Ark, but was defeated by his own surgical tools. But using pieces he took from the junkyard, he repaired Prowl, and the appearance of the police car frightened the Mechanic away. The Mechanic escaped with Ratchet's tools and the Power Booster Rod.  Funeral for a Friend!

Shortly after Optimus Prime's funeral, Ratchet stood with Omega Supreme, Blaster, and the others, and an incoming fleet of aircraft piloted by the terrorist organization Cobra was detected.  Ashes, Ashes...  After the Autobots teamed up with the human counterterrorist organization G.I. Joe, Ratchet worked with [[Mainframe (G.I. With Optimus Prime dead, Ratchet and a few other high-ranking Autobots assembled to nominate a new leader.  Ratchet stressed that their nominee must be kind, just as Optimus Prime had been, someone who would be willing to give everything he had.  After a surprise attack on the Ark by Trypticon, Ratchet had his answer.  Ratchet's new patients, those that had suffered during the attack, had told him of Grimlock's selflessness in battle.  The other Autobots agreed, and Grimlock was declared Autobot leader.  King of the Hill!  However, Grimlock's leadership quickly turned sour, and Ratchet became the voice of sarcasm behind Grimlock's decisions.  When a second group of Autobots led by Fortress Maximus met Grimlock's Earth-bound Autobots, they brought with them a floppy disk containing the mind of the dead Optimus Prime.  Ratchet couldn't contain his joy, and so Grimlock struck him down and told him to shut up.  Ratchet was told to shut up again when he belittled Grimlock's disbelief that Fortress Maximus was part human.  Grimlock set up a battle for Autobot supremacy between him and Blaster (who fought in Fortress Maximus' stead), so Ratchet and all of both Autobot groups stepped out onto the surface of Earth's moon to watch the fight.  Ratchet cheered relentlessly for Blaster, but the spectators were cut short by a surprise Decepticon attack.  After the Decepticons had fled, Ratchet was glad to see that Blaster and Grimlock had, for the moment, set aside their differences, because they would need all the cooperation they could muster to repair the fallen and the heavily-damaged Ark.  Totaled!
Once Ratchet was in a big book of coloring fun.  The Big Book of Coloring Fun

When an Underbase-powered Starscream and a time-traveling Galvatron decimated the Earthbound Autobot forces, Optimus Prime no longer possessed the life-giving powers of the Creation Matrix, so Ratchet was left with the monumental task of repairing them.  Deathbringer During a period of work-induced stress, he began to hallucinate visions of his patients attacking him and accusing him of being worthless. It was during this time that the Decepticon Sports Car Patrol, posing as Autobots, offered to help transport Ratchet to Cybertron, where he could have access to new medical technology that had been created during his 4-million-year absence on Earth. He and three of the Sports Car Patrol took the bodies of Grimlock, Jazz, and Goldbug with him, though Ratchet was curious why Blackjack stayed behind on the Ark. Ratchet's concerns were answered when, upon arrival on Cybertron, he saw standing before him the believed-to-be-deceased Megatron, who had orchestrated the entire scheme. Back from the Dead
Ratchet was part of a small strike team of Autobots assembled by Ultra Magnus to help the Dinobots, who were currently engaged in battle against the Decepticons, just outside of Autobot City. Upon arriving at Oil Valley, Ratchet tended to the injured Slag. After they defeated the Decepticons, Ratchet and the others were cheered on by the nearby oil rig workers as they drove back to Autobot City. Battle at Oil Valley

While he and the other Autobots were busy having a good time, they were attacked by the Decepticons.  After a cerebro-shelled Springer hurt Hot Rod, Ratchet repaired the latter while questioning the former. When the Autobots discovered the cerebro-shell was the cause of Springer's behavioral turn, Ratchet helped lead the Autobots to the Decepticon camp to get their revenge. The Invasion of the Decepticon Camp

Megatron brought Ratchet the remains of Starscream, demanding Ratchet repair the Air Commander while Blackjack held the Ark and its medical bay inhabitants hostage. Ratchet agreed, and he used Pretender technology to repair Starscream while secretly repairing Grimlock, Jazz, and Goldbug as well. After Pretender Starscream was sent to Earth, Megatron sought out Ratchet to kill him, but Ratchet had his own Pretenders ready.  The Resurrection Gambit!  Ratchet sprung Grimlock, Jazz, and Bumblebee (Ratchet preferred Bumblebee's original form) on Megatron, but Megatron and his Micromasters were too powerful for them. The Pretenders and Micromasters' battle wandered outside the Decepticon base, and Ratchet was left alone. Sacrificing his life, Ratchet warped the bombs Blackjack had put on the Ark into the Decepticon base in an attempt to kill both himself and Megatron. Megatron tried to escape through the warp portal, but Ratchet tackled him, and the base exploded. Skin Deep

Upon awakening on Earth after being offline for about 65 million years, Ratchet met Sparkplug and his son Spike. With the Decepticons still not in the know of what forms the Autobots had taken, Ratchet was one of the troops that Optimus led into the desert in order to ambush their enemies. Though they successfully took by surprise a squadron of Decepticons, the Autobots had not anticipated a second group flying in from the opposite direction. Thanks to a warning from Spike and Sparkplug, the Autobots managed to fend off the Decepticons, and came to accept Earth as their new home. Battle for Cybertron

Optimus Prime was devastated by the loss of Ratchet. Yesterday's Heroes! He assigned the detective Nightbeat to investigate Ratchet's death, and Nightbeat hypothesized that Ratchet could possibly still be alive. There was an initial blast which could have knocked Ratchet into the portal and into unspace, a netherworld between the warp portal's starting and ending points. A probe was sent to retrieve him, and it succeeded—but it also brought back Megatron, who was fused with Ratchet as a single, monstrous being.  Eye of the Storm The Ratchet/Megatron creature rampaged through the Ark, wounding several Autobots, but Optimus Prime would not let them harm it. This put Optimus Prime in an awkward position: Was the life of Ratchet worth the possible loss of his other troops? The creature fought his way into the engine rooms and began tearing stuff apart, and Prime's choice was made for him: The creature must be stopped. Prime fought Ratchet/Megatron to a standstill, and, alarmingly, the part that was Ratchet took control and pulled Prime's gun to his own forehead, pleading for the Autobot Commander to put him out of his misery. In an unpopular decision, Optimus Prime ordered Fixit to separate Megatron and Ratchet, even if it meant saving Megatron. Bonded at a molecular level, neither could survive without the other, even when separated.  The Price of Life!

Ratchet raced onto the scene to repair Hound, and joked that his patient sure falls apart when a missile hits him! Also, Hound complained that Ratchet was screwing him together too tightly, causing him pain.

Separated by Fixit, they remained in stasis on the Ark until Grimlock and his Nucleon-revived Dinobots found the Ark abandoned during the Transformers' battle with Unicron. While Galvatron and Megatron teamed up on Shockwave, Starscream went to check on any other possible survivors in the medical bay. He found Ratchet, whose mind was still connected to Megatron's, and Starscream fought the confused Autobot easily. However, when Starscream mused that Ratchet was no fun to kill, Ratchet became enraged and defeated him in a berserker state. ====Dinobots Strike Back====
In the path where Mirage used a hologram of Optimus Prime to lure the four cerebro-shell-controlled Dinobots over the edge of Bandit's Bluff and into the ocean, Ratchet was one of the Autobots crewing Seaspray's destroyer mode. He helped haul the unconscious quartet aboard for safe transport back to the Ark, then dried them off, chuckling, "This is one Decepticon plan that was all wet!" (The Autobots never learn about Operation Black Coral in this path)

Classics
In an alternate path, Bumblebee and Skids were exploring Dolphin's Bay in search of Decepticon activity when the former was paralyzed and left in an underwater cave by Frenzy. This leads to four possible endings, two of which involve Ratchet rescuing Bumblebee. In one, he first repairs a waterlogged and injured Skids on the deck of Seaspray after Sludge hauled his disabled mini-sub off the ocean floor. Skids then told his three teammates about Operation Black Coral, prompting a full-scale Autobot assault, during which Ratchet and Skids used the repaired sub to rescue Bumblebee. Another ending saw a similar assault in which Ratchet was part of the land-force and rescued Bumblebee on his own. Dinobots Strike Back

Attack of the Insecticons
Ratchet was a minor player in many possible adventures centred around the Sun-Pak, a device created by Sparkplug to solve the Autobots' energy woes. The Autobot medic was present to tend to depowered Autobots should the situation allow it, as well as ribbing his friend Ironhide about the later's old age. Attack of the Insecticons
Fifteen years after Ratchet seemingly perished with Megatron, Starscream, and Shockwave when the Ark crashed into the Yukon, Megatron had returned to power. Starscream had been fully rebuilt, Shockwave's disembodied head was rigged to exist only in a tortured advisory role, and Ratchet's body was stashed, seemingly lifeless, in a dark corner of Megatron's new throne room within the Ark's remains.   Games of Deception

Decepticon Poison
Generation 1 cartoon
In one possible scenario, where a squad of Autobots recently cured from a Decepticon poison lead the charge against the Decepticons only to be overpowered by Megatron, Ratchet was quick to jump into action and tend to the wounded. His first patient was Sunstreaker, who had been struck down by a blast of Megatron's fusion cannon. Though the Decepticons were eventually forced to retreat, Ratchet would undoubtedly have his hands full repairing all the Autobots severely injured that day.

In another possible turn of events, Ratchet helped Perceptor dispense his cure to the ailing Autobots. Unfortunately, Perceptor miscalculated how much of his antidote to give to each Autobot. The Autobots who received the antidote soon found themselves falling apart, and though Ratchet attempted to fix them as quickly as possible, the Autobots were left outmatched against the greater number of Decepticons, and quickly defeated.
Ratchet served as chief medical officer of the Ark on its mission to seek out new energy sources to fuel the Autobot struggle against the Decepticons. When the Ark was boarded by the crew of the Nemesis, Ratchet attempted to defend his ship by attacking Soundwave, but was thrown into a computer console for his trouble. Ratchet and the other Transformers were forced into emergency stasis lock when the out-of-control Ark crashed into a volcano on a primitive planet. Four million years later, the volcano erupted, activating Teletraan I to rebuild the Autobots and Decepticons. Ratchet was rebuilt into a human-scaled ambulance. After Hound and Cliffjumper's failed scouting mission ended in a counterattack by Laserbeak, Ratchet arrived with Hauler to pull the damaged Hound out of a ravine. Once he finished repairing Hound, Ratchet was part of the battlegroup sent to stop the Decepticons stealing the oil from an off-shore oil rig. However, he did not fare well in this battle. More than Meets the Eye, Part 1

After the Autobots saved their new human friends, Spike and Sparkplug Witwicky, from the oil rig fire, Ratchet repaired Huffer's damaged arm in the repair bay outside the Ark. More than Meets the Eye, Part 2 When Optimus Prime was caught in the explosion of the Ruby Crystal Mines of Burma, Ratchet helped the Autobot leader recover, but evidently his skills as a medic were not required, as Prime was totally fine after transforming back into robot mode. Soon afterwards, Ironhide was shot by Skywarp, so Ratchet carried the old-timer back to base for repairs. More than Meets the Eye, Part 3
In another possible sequence of events, Optimus successfully retrieved the antidote to the poison from the Decepticons’ poison lab, and with Ratchet's help, brought the poisoned Autobots back from the precipice of death.

During an ill-fated Autobot attempt to defend the local solar power plant, Starscream managed to shoot the guns out of Ratchet and Prowl's hands. Smarting from the concussion blast, Ratchet called for the Autobots to fall back. However, Ironhide once again managed to get himself damaged while saving Optimus Prime. Ironhide objected to Ratchet and Sparkplug's diagnosis of his damage, but Ratchet warned him against backtalk or the medic would short out Ironhide's mouth circuit. To prevent further argument, he shut down Ironhide, cutting off the warrior in mid-sentence. After the Autobots were led into a trap by a reprogrammed Bumblebee, Ratchet discovered the tampering done by the Decepticons and restored the little Autobot. Transport to Oblivion
If Optimus later decided to bring a squadron of Autobots to the nearby water reservoir, in order to present the Decepticons from poisoning the nearby human population, Ratchet was amongst the Autobots who came along.

In addition to patching up his fellow warriors whenever someone (usually Megatron) had roughed them up a little, Ratchet was also in charge of helping whenever Wheeljack had another invention in the making. Working together, the two Autobots designed and built the Dinobots more or less from scratch—and did a pretty good job, considering they were working with substandard materials.  S.O.S. Dinobots Ratchet was also responsible for saving Optimus Prime's life, performing a daring surgery on the Autobot leader while subjected to attacks by Laserbeak. Divide and Conquer When Skyfire refused to assassinate the Autobots and was gunned down by Starscream, it was Ratchet who reconstructed the giant Decepticon scientist and gave him the chance to reform. Fire in the Sky
In one possible scenario, Ratchet was tasked with attempting once more with reassembling the many Autobots who had fallen on the battlefield. Decepticon Poison

Autobot Alert!
In 1985, after Spike was injured during a battle with the Decepticons, Ratchet carried their injured human friend to the metro hospital. While Spike's mind was transferred into the Autobot X experimental body Sparkplug had made earlier, Ratchet repaired the battle-damaged Bumblebee, but was forced to cut short his repairs after Spike went on a rampage in his new body. After Spike's mind was returned to his real body, Ratchet theorised that he could probably fix the problems in the mind-transfer process, but thought it was better left alone. Autobot Spike When Megatron captured Gears and unwittingly threatened the destruction of the Earth with his Solar Needle, Ratchet totally fly-kicked Thundercracker. After the Decepticons retreated, Ratchet and Wheeljack argued over which wire they had to disconnect to stabilize the Sun. However, nobody seemed to notice that he and Gears sounded exactly the same. Changing Gears
In one possible scenario, Ratchet was ordered by Ultra Magnus to prep the Autobots’ shuttle; the Decepticons were in the middle of taking over Earth's communication satellites. After a few technical difficulties, Ratchet was able to have the shuttle ready for take-off, allowing Ultra Magnus's team to head into space and attempt to foil the Decepticons’ ploy.

In another possible scenario, wherein Ultra Magnus agreed to prioritize theft of a coded message, Ratchet was part of the captive audience that listened to Kup divulge information about an ancient Autobot formula. Ratchet took off towards the Autobots’ desert research centre along with a number of other Autobots. Once there, he was tasked with fixing Springer.
In the year 2005, while piloting a secret mission to Autobot City in order to gather a stockpile of energon from Earth, Ratchet and his allies were attacked by Megatron. Ratchet and Ironhide returned fire, but they were both shot repeatedly and left for dead on the floor of the shuttle as the Decepticons continued with their attack on Autobot City. The Transformers: The Movie

Ratchet's body was evidently recovered for interment, as his grave was housed in the interstellar Autobot Mausoleum. Sadly, it was not Ratchet's fate to rest in peace; along with the mausoleum itself, Ratchet's remains were later plunged into a sun as a side-effect of a Quintesson plot. Dark Awakening
With Springer fixed, Ratchet and the Autobots learned that the cybertite sphere containing the formula was discovered by humans during the 16th century. If the Decepticons had decoded Springer's message, they would be searching off the coast of California, where the ship containing the sphere had sunk. If they hadn't decoded the message, the Decepticons would still be digging in the nearby crater.

Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers comic
If Ultra Magnus decided to assume that the Decepticons had already decrypted the message, he ordered his forces to split up to more efficiently address the situation. Ratchet was part of the main Autobot force being led by Ultra Magnus. Ultra Magnus's troops were informed by Powerglide (who had flown ahead of the land-bound group) that he had discovered the location of the sunken ship containing the cybertite sphere. Simultaneously, Blurr caught up with the group to inform them that the Decepticons were quickly approaching. The Autobots then needed to decide whether they would raise the ship themselves, or try and ambush the Decepticons after they had done so.
Amidst a massave battle against the Decepticons at the Autobot base in Arizona, Ratchet was one of the first to notice that Soundwave and his cassette forces were nowhere to be found. Now suspicious, Optimus Prime immediately alerted all his units in Japan to be on the lookout for the Decepticon. Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 2

Later, as Kenji was enjoying a tour of a secret Autobot facility in Japan, Ratchet was alerted to an attack by Megatron, Blitzwing and Starscream in Yokohama. The Autobots immediately rolled out to meet the threat. Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 4
In one possible scenario that ensued, Grapple had been tasked to retrieve the sunken ship containing the sphere via the use of his crane, only for it to suffer a mechanical breakdown. Though Ratchet was able to fix it, the Autobots had lost valuable time. The Decepticons showed up and destroyed both the ship and sphere within, leaving the Autobots to be pummelled by superior Decepticon firepower. Autobot Alert!

The Invisibility Factor
In one possible scenario, the Decepticons gained control of an Invisibility Device. When the invisible Decepticons attacked Metroplex city, Ratchet and the rest of the Autobots were reduced to scrap metal, unable to fight the unseen enemy.

Binaltech
In another scenario, Ratchet inspected Kup and Hot Rod's circuits after Springer and Jazz told him they suspected the former two had a few wires loose. Ratchet gave the pair a clean bill of health, but Kup and Hot Rod's claims of seeing spaceships with invisibility capabilities were dismissed and forgotten nonetheless. Then, Ratchet and the rest of the Autobots within Metroplex were caught by surprise by a fleet of identical ships swooping down upon them. The Autobots were all destroyed as Galvatron gloated of his victory. The Invisibility Factor
Along with Wheeljack, Ratchet helped implant Chip Chase's consciousness into the lifeless Prowl-2 shell when Prowl's spark was lost in subspace.

Ratchet was part of a detachment of Autobots that had operated covertly on Earth for at least four years, attempting to foil a Decepticon insurgency. The Autobots' Chief Medical Officer, a close friend of Optimus Prime and someone who had treated every Prime since Nominus Prime, Ratchet somehow ended up in a bog-standard Tactical Response Unit on a tenth-rate planet called "Earth" circling around a fourth-rate star called "the Sun" populated by strange creatures known as "humans". There, after several years, he went rogue to track down a human who had somehow found his way into a Decepticon Infiltration Bunker. Finding him dead, he found his palmtop computer with photos of the base in the hands of a runaway called Verity Carlo, triggering the discovery a series of events that would bring Optimus himself to Earth after even Prowl, his unit commander, ultimately had to admit was significant despite his hatred for Ratchet's "playing hero."

The Autobots and humans were leaving the Decepticons to finish their work when an enraged Megatron burst from the buried ruins of the bunker. Thankfully for them, Megatron was more concerned with the treachery of Blitzwing and Skywarp, allowing Ratchet and the others to escape with their lives.  Infiltration issue 5 Unwilling to risk their safety further, Ratchet subsequently returned the humans to Ark-17, where they met the newly arrived Optimus Prime. Infiltration issue 6
After the Decepticon Surge, Ratchet was amongst those stranded first on an uninhabitable Cybertron, then Earth for an extended time. After these and Galvatron's Chaos War were over, finished, he joined the crew of the Lost Light, aiming to find a successor as CMO - and while he did so, by the name of First Aid, he also found a new pair of hands to replace his worn-out set, courtesy of the mad Pharma who would become his new arch-enemy. Groovy.

After Sunstreaker was apparently destroyed by a mysterious human organisation, Ratchet determined that the wreckage the Autobots recovered was a fake.  Escalation issue 2 Later, Ratchet and Ironhide, against orders, accompanied Verity Carlo and Jimmy Pink to find clues on the missing Sunstreaker's and Hunter's whereabouts while Optimus Prime and the other Autobots went to Brasnya.  Escalation issue 4 When the humans set off a trap, the Autobots saved them, though Ironhide was critically injured and Ratchet was forced to abandon him to bring the humans to safety. Escalation issue 6
In his time aboard the madcap ship, Ratchet would form a grudging respect for the Decepticon turncoat Drift, eventually leaving the ship to find the exiled 'bot, forming a strong bond with him once they'd reunited. In time, this evolved into a full blown romance, the two becoming Conjunx Endura before, far in the future, Ratchet experienced "age-related burnout" and passed peacefully, knowing he'd found love and something bigger than himself.

The humans extracted Ratchet's DNA and combined it with mutated human genes to engineer a deadly virus, mistakenly believing it was the key to preventing a supposed invasion of human-alien hybrids. Ratchet was a member of the Ark when the ship left Cybertron four million years ago; when the Ark crash-landed on Earth, its occupants reactivated in the late 20th century to resume their secret war against the Decepticons until the destructive Eugenics Wars and the subsequent outbreak of World War III forced the Autobots to flee the planet aboard Fortress Maximus. After decades of travel across the galaxy in search of energon, Fortress Maximus was attacked by Trypticon and boarded by the Decepticons, with the subsequent battle sent Fortress Maximus and its occupants—both Autobot and Decepticon—crashing to the barren surface of Cygnus Seven.

The Autobots and their Decepticon combatants remained in stasis for many centuries, until the day that Federation miners stumbled across the Titan's inert form while prospecting a dilithium mineshaft, triggering Fortress Maximus automated repair subroutines and bringing the Cybertronians within his form back to life. Prime's Directive, Part Two While the Decepticons immediately launched an attack on the surface mining colony, with Optimus rolling out to stop them, the other Autobots had only just returned to consciousness when Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise investigated, with Jazz—distrustful of humans thanks to their time on Earth—taking command of the situation and preemptively trying to blast the humans. Prime's Directive, Part One Ratchet convinced Jazz to stand down, and after Kirk convinced the Autobots of their good intentions and filled them in on the situation the Autobots agreed to protect Cygnus Seven from the Decepticons; though the Decepticons collapsed the mineshaft in an attempt to seal the Autobots in, Ratchet hatched a new plan to bring Fortress Maximus back online and into fighting shape.

After adjusting Fortress Maximus's internal workings, Ratchet was able to rig up a mechanism so that Kirk could interface with the gigantic Autobot, and from his mind Ratchet was able to glean a memory of the starship Enterprise and its schematics. Fortress Maximus was able to reconfigure his body into a Cybertronian-scaled copy of the starship and blast free, and as the other Autobots and Starfleet personnel faced off against the Decepticons and their Klingon allies Ratchet, helped Kirk take command of the living ship in the ensuing battle, eventually getting Kirk to transform the Titan into "Fortress Tiberius." Prime's Directive, Part Three Despite Ratchet's best efforts, however, Kirk was unable to prevent Fortress Maximus's own instincts from overriding his own, nearly succumbing to the Autobot's desire for revenge before the human successfully defeated Trypticon. On learning that Starscream had absconded with a load of dilithium and planned to conquer the Klingon homeworld, Ratchet reunited with the other Autobots and their Federation allies aboard Fortress Tiberius as they rendezvoused with the real Enterprise and helped to get the damaged ship back online. Prime's Directive, Part Four

Needing to monitor the binary bonding, Ratchet remained aboard the Titan, even as his fellows were beamed to the real Enterprise, and clashed with Doctor McCoy on health protocol, before Kirk and Optimus came up with the idea of the Crewbots. Ratchet did not take part in the battle for Kronos, remaining aboard Maximus, where he reunited with his friends as they went off to explore the galaxy. Prime's Directive, Part Five

Ratchet joined Optimus Prime and several other Autobots as they battled for control of a space bridge, until a sudden accident pulled them across dimensions and into the Japan of an alternate reality. Upon arriving, the heroes encountered Baron Ashura, who misled them into supporting Doctor Hell and his Iron Mask Army in their campaign against Kōji Kabuto's Mazinger Z super robot. The Autobots joined their new allies when they made an attack on the Photonic Power Laboratory and faced off against Mazinger Z, but soon realized that they'd been deceived and turned on their former allies before forming a new alliance with Mazinger Z.

When the Decepticons and the Mechanical Beasts made a second run on the building, Ratchet watched from afar as Optimus Prime rode the Jet Scrander into battle. Eventually, when everyone involved put aside their differences to defeat a Maazinger-empowered Starscream, the explosion that destroyed Starscream proved powerful enough to open a second portal that transported Ratchet and the other Cybertronians back to their own universe. Mazinger Z versus Transformers

Before he was a doctor, Ratchet was one of the most brilliant engineers on Cybertron. He was well known for his ability to put machines back together as well as designing weapons, his fame even reaching as far as Caminus. But when he saw what those weapons did during the war, he gave up engineering and devoted himself to medicine. Embittered by how Optimus Prime had only prolonged the conflict, he established a hidden clinic inside an abandoned theatre where he committed himself to helping anyone in need of his care, regardless of faction, and asked only that his patients pay this kindness forward by helping all the other patients. While searching the ruins of Iacon, Ratchet uncovered the Decepticon Impactor underneath a huge pile of rubble and took him back to the clinic for repairs.

When the Autobots discovered a disused space bridge, Optimus Prime and Wheeljack sought out Ratchet clinic and asked for his help to bring it back online. Ratchet initially refused, believing that this decision would only jeopardize his patients and potentially spread their war to other planets, but eventually pledged his support when Prime informed him that Megatron planned to weaponize the Allspark. Siege episode 3 After joining up with the Autobots, Ratchet and Impactor travelled to the spacebridge to try and bring it online; Impactor and the Autobots were able to draw Decepticon fire so that Ratchet could complete his work on the device during a brief lull in Decepticon activity. Siege episode 4

Ratchet soon brought the bridge back online, and Mirage was able to disguise the installation from another Seeker patrol. Siege episode 5 During the final battle for the Allspark, Ratchet was on hand to reactivate the bridge at the right moment—but when Optimus ordered him to activate it, he would've died if not for Impactor deliberately throwing himself into Starscream's line of fire and sacrificing himself to save his rescuer's life. As Omega Supreme joined the melee, Ratchet joined Prime and the others as they boarded the Ark and flew through the spacebridge to a distant corner of the galaxy. Siege episode 6 Though Ratchet had gone, Elita-1's Autobots used his clinic as their new base of operations while resisting Shockwave's regime. Earthrise episode 1

After the Ark and its crew escaped Deseeus on the planet Chaar, Ratchet informed Prime that they'd found the Allspark but lacked the energon to make the trip. Instead, he proposed travelling to the nearby Nebulon system and using the still-active space bridge there to reach the artifact. However, when they arrived and sent a reconnaissance team to investigate, the Autobots found that an abandoned space station had blocked the portal; though Ratchet unsuccessfully tried to establish control over the old outpost, Wheeljack instead proposed sending an expedition to scuttle the vessel from withinEarthrise episode 3 Later, Ratchet took part in the final battle over Earth that ended with both the Ark and the Nemesis crash-landing on the primitive planet. Earthrise episode 6

The Autobots discovered that they weren't the only Cybertronians on prehistoric Earth—the Maximals, a group of Cybertronians from a dystopian alternate future, found the Ark first, and Ratchet was forced to intervene between Maximal commander Optimus Primal and Optimus Prime to tend to the still-wounded Autobot leader. Kingdom episode 1 Ratchet, Wheeljack, and Rhinox stayed behind to repair the starship and get a fix on the AllSPark's current position. Kingdom episode 2 After the heroes recovered the AllSPark, Ratchet and Wheeljack attempted to launch the vessel, but were unable to activate the ship before the Decepticons and their new Predacon used the Nemesis to launch a full-scale attack. Although the three struggled to repair the vessel, the day was saved when Teletraan I reconfigured their starship into a towering robot form and used this new body to defeat the Nemesis. Kingdom episode 5 After returning to a lifeless Cybertron, Ratchet took part in the final battle against a time-travelling Nemesis Prime and Galvatron and later watched as the AllSpark returned the planet to life, marking the end of the Autobot-Decepticon war. Kingdom episode 6

Ratchet used the distraction to prepare his equipment, but was interrupted by Knock Out taking some of it to use on Breakdown in an attempt to free him. Set upon by the possessed bots, Ratchet expressed scorn at the idea of "friendship energy" being the solution, only for Rarity to remind him that it worked against Sombra once before. Ratchet was among the many Autobots and Decepticons lying dormant on the crashed Ark when the newly arrived Jetfire—unaware of the Autobot-Decepticon conflict—used Teletraan One to indiscriminately reactivate all the Cybertronians aboard. As the newly activated Starscream rampaged through the ship, the freshly reactivated Ratchet leapt to Optimus Prime's assistance by kicking Starscream in the head. As more Decepticons sprang to life, Prime ordered a hasty retreat; Ratchet loaded as many dormant Autobots as he could into Prime's Combat Deck while the Autobot leader kept the Decepticons busy. Optimus blasted Teletraan to keep the Decepticons from  reviving any more Transformers before the two active Autobots fled the ship alongside Spike and Carly. The group retreated to an abandoned quarry, where Optimus attempted to use the Matrix to heal a terminally wounded Jetfire. Ratchet accompanied Optimus to visit a recovering Spike, although the boy had little to say to either of them. On the way back home, Ratchet assured Prime that Sparky had chosen to die for the cause, before a sudden Matrix-induced vision of a baby Spike caused Prime to swerve off the road. After recovering and returning to the Ark, Ratchet and the other Autobots stood by as Optimus revealed his plan to find what remained of the Decepticons. Transformers (2023) issue 7 As part of this plan, Ratchet successfully repaired Jetfire; as Ratchet later explained to his leader, there was only enough left of his spark to bring him back as an improvised troop carrier—Jetfire was now trapped in alternate mode, permanently blinded, and unable to move under his own powerLater, when renewed Decepticon activity was detected, Prime, Ratchet, Cliffjumper, and Jazz flew Jetfire to the Pacific Ocean to investigate. Transformers (2023) issue 8

: The mold's standard "receiver dish" weapon was not produced; instead, he came with a new "light bar" that pegged onto his roof in much the same manner.
No sooner had they arrived before an energy pulse sent Jetfire crashing to the sea, sending his occupants flying. The team discovered that Shockwave had arrived on Earth by way of a space bridge with the intent of converting Earth's natural resources into energon. In the ensuing undersea battle, Soundwave—wielding Shockwave's gun mode—cornered Cliffjumper and prepared to execute the little Autobot. Ratchet jumped and took the shot intended for his comrade, blowing a massive hole in his chest. Though Cliffjumper survived, he and Jazz were captured by the Decepticons and dragged away for further experimentation. Transformers (2023) issue 9

: He could only be purchased in an at-show "souvenir" two-pack along with Flareup.
News of Ratchet's death hit Wheeljack particularly hard. Transformers (2023) issue 10 Sometime after, the US Coast Guard recovered Ratchet's body from the ocean and brought it to Farmingham. ====Autobot story====

:While similar in execution, there are a great many changes from Henkei Ratchet to Universe Ratchet. The red paint detailing on Universe Ratchet is different than that of Henkei Ratchet in color and layout.  The Henkei version's stripes resemble that more of his original counterpart, while the Universe version resemble that of his Animated version.  Henkei Ratchet uses chrome paint on his weapon and both sets of lights while the Universe version leaves them unpainted. Gray paint covers Henkei Ratchet's gun barrel and silver on his upper chest (behind the chest window), these parts remain unpainted on Universe Ratchet.  The paint used for the windows of Universe Ratchet is a light blue while Henkei Ratchet uses a deeper metallic blue paint. Henkei Ratchet has black forearms and upper thighs, while the Japanese version uses a pure white (different from the white used through out the rest of the figure).  Universe Ratchet has a yellow vanity plate and red head crest while Henkei Ratchet has a blank gray plate and gray head crest.  Universe Ratchet features a blue blade on his weapon, while Henkei Ratchet features a red blade.  Universe Ratchet also features a lighter red plastic than the Henkei version.
Decepticon story
During the search for the Jewel of Mystery, the Decepticons needed a key to proceed through the ruins. While searching for Chromedome and the key, they came across Ratchet. ===Transformers G1: Awakening===

Ratchet was among the Autobots who left Cybertron aboard the Ark, and spent four million years in stasis after it was shot down over Earth by the Decepticons. He was among the first of the Autobots to recover, and sent Bumblebee on a series of energy gathering missions while he attempted to repair Optimus and the others. Ratchet worried about involving the humans in their war, but Optimus awoke in time to announce they had no choice. During a battle at Dyson Dam, the Autobots captured Jetfire, whom Ratchet repaired after it turned out Jetfire wasn't a Decepticon after all. Discovering that the Decepticons had built a space bridge, the Autobots used it to return to Cybertron, onto to find that their home world had been conquered by Shockwave during their four million year nap.

By rewiring the circuitry in his embedded tool set, Ratchet was able to free himself and Bumblebee and the pair liberated Optimus and Metroplex before the Autobot team retreated back to Earth. They arrived back in time to help Grimlock in battle against the Decepticons. When the Autobots detected a distress call, Ratchet thought it might be Grimlock, but as it turned out, it was a trap. They managed to survive that, and hurried back to the Ark, where they had to repel a Decepticon assault on their ship. Transformers G1: Awakening

Ratchet is one of the oldest members of the Autobots. This was evident in a chipped corner of his helm, a reminder of the Cybertronian civil war. As a skilled medic, Ratchet was praised for his charisma and positive attitude towards others. When Ratchet comes to mind, he is first perceived as a comedian who's able to describe things in an interesting manner. To any Autobots, he is both their friend and medic. As long as his iron will lives on, Ratchet's performance on the battlefield will always be exceptional.

*Bob Budiansky has said that he named Ratchet after the less-friendly medic Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
*Ratchet never really showed his party animal spirit in Marvel, outside of the start of "Warrior School". Budiansky gives two answers for why: "1) in the comic book stories, he always found himself in situations too serious to allow his party personality to emerge. 2) I screwed up and forgot I had written that as part of his profile. I prefer to go with answer number 1."
*In the Shout! Factory Matrix of Leadership Special Edition DVD set, an interview with Bob Budiansky features close-ups of his original character notes for several characters, Ratchet being one of them. Oddly, his handwritten notes refer to Ratchet as "her" and the Autobots' "go-to gal" for repairs. While this obviously was not the final direction the character took, it is an odd coincidence... and a fact that makes the early nicknames "Cool Hand Lube" and "Greasefinger" even more embarrassing.
*In a different gender-related coincidence, the French Diaclone release of Ratchet, "Ambulance", was referred to as female in one of Joustra's pack-in minicomics.
*The colors of Ratchet's helmet differ depending on the medium... and sometimes within the same medium: The original Sunbow cartoon gave him a white helmet with a black crest, whereas the Marvel comic gave him a red helmet with a white crest. The 2005 exclusive figure was the first Ratchet toy with an actual head, and it followed the cartoon coloring for the helmet (although the crest ended up silver rather than black). Since then, pretty much every toy ever put out by TakaraTomy has followed the cartoon coloring for the helmet, whereas a lot of Hasbro's toys as well as numerous video games have opted for a "hybrid" cartoon/Marvel comic version (or an "inverted Marvel" version), a white helmet with a red crest. (The 2016 customization class figure offered all three versions as part of different possible Ratchet decos.) The Dreamwave continuity featured the "Marvel" colors for the helmet for stories set in the distant past (such as the War Within titles), while stories set in the then-present day depicted the helmet in "cartoon" colors. The first IDW universe long favoured the "Marvel" colors for the helmet, although the "cartoon" colors as well as the modern-day "Hasbro toy" colors occasionally slip in by mistake, sometimes even alternating within the same issue (and are then sometimes fixed for the trade paperback collection); and it was reversed towards the end of the continuity. The second IDW continuity (and indeed most contemporary media like the War for Cybertron cartoon and several IDW crossover miniseries) go with a Sunbow-accurate white helmet, though the colour of the chevron can vary depending on the artist. Another weird one-off version, a red helmet with a red crest, appears in the storybook The Great Car Rally.
*Speaking of colors: The Hall of Fame banner that was outside the Pasadena Civic Auditorium during 2011 depicted Ratchet with inverted shoulder colors. While ostensibly done to avoid the legal wrath of the Red Cross organization, it suggests that Ratchet has suddenly become Christian and/or decided to align himself with Switzerland.
*While Ratchet has a toy-accurate head design in the War for Cybertron Trilogy cartoon, the rest of his body is just a redressing of Ironhide's model, as evident by the lack of the remolded details that the toy received.

The name or term "Ratchet" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Ratchet (disambiguation).

This article is a featured article, and considered to be one of the most informative on this wiki.

Ratchet is an Autobot from the Generation 1 continuity family.
All aboard the party ambulance!

His vehicle mode sometimes splits into his robot and a separate component. In some universes, he can combine with his fellow Autobots to form Defensor, Sky Reign or Modulus, or serve as a "universal donor" to any other combiner.

In some timelines, Ratchet becomes the last Autobot alive, thus taking on the moniker The Autobot.[1]

I guess I've been too busy to think about the dead... I've been too concerned with helping the living.

—Ratchet, "Funeral for a Friend!"

Marvel Comics continuity

Generation 1 cartoon continuity

[edit]
Ruh-roh. Rooby-rooby-roo!

Ratchet was the chief medical officer aboard the Ark and continued to serve in that capacity for Optimus Prime's forces on Earth during the mid-1980s. He formed something of a friendly rivalry with the human Sparkplug Witwicky, who often assisted him in his repairs. In 2005, Ratchet was killed by the Decepticons just prior to the Battle of Autobot City. His body was interred on the Autobot Mausoleum, but it was ultimately destroyed in an explosion.

That's so (1984) Ratchet!

"You sure are a jerk when you repair me, Ratchet!"

The following summarizes one or more multipath adventures. Details vary depending on the paths taken in-story. See the book's page for information on alternate paths.

Dinobots Strike Back

[edit]

In the path where Mirage used a hologram of Optimus Prime to lure the four cerebro-shell-controlled Dinobots over the edge of Bandit's Bluff and into the ocean, Ratchet was one of the Autobots crewing Seaspray's destroyer mode. He helped haul the unconscious quartet aboard for safe transport back to the Ark, then dried them off, chuckling, "This is one Decepticon plan that was all wet!" (The Autobots never learn about Operation Black Coral in this path)

[edit]

Ratchet was a minor player in many possible adventures centred around the Sun-Pak, a device created by Sparkplug to solve the Autobots' energy woes. The Autobot medic was present to tend to depowered Autobots should the situation allow it, as well as ribbing his friend Ironhide about the later's old age. Attack of the Insecticons

Decepticon Poison

[edit]

In another possible sequence of events, Optimus successfully retrieved the antidote to the poison from the Decepticons’ poison lab, and with Ratchet's help, brought the poisoned Autobots back from the precipice of death.

If Optimus later decided to bring a squadron of Autobots to the nearby water reservoir, in order to present the Decepticons from poisoning the nearby human population, Ratchet was amongst the Autobots who came along.

In one possible scenario, Ratchet was tasked with attempting once more with reassembling the many Autobots who had fallen on the battlefield. Decepticon Poison

Autobot Alert!

[edit]

[edit]

In one possible scenario, the Decepticons gained control of an Invisibility Device. When the invisible Decepticons attacked Metroplex city, Ratchet and the rest of the Autobots were reduced to scrap metal, unable to fight the unseen enemy.

He repaired Skids after the theoretician was damaged in a battle with Trypticon. Confrontation

Ratchet was among the crew of the Ark when it crashed on Earth, and awoke in 1984 to battle the Decepticons. After years of fighting, Ratchet and the other Autobots took part in Operation Liberation in 1998, a joint human/Autobot operation that defeated and captured the Earth-bound Decepticons. However, the Ark II, which was meant to convey the Autobots, the captured Decepticons, and a number of humans back to Cybertron, was sabotaged by General Robert Hallo, sending Ratchet and his comrades to the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. Years later, Ratchet was brought back by the sinister Lazarus, who had recovered and reprogrammed a number of Transformers for his nefarious ends. However, when Megatron broke free of Lazarus's control, he hooked up Ratchet and a number of other Autobots to a device that generated a deadly "metal virus". Prime Directive #3 Soon after, Optimus Prime detached Ratchet and the others from the doomsday device, Prime Directive #4 and he eventually recovered.

When the alien Keepers took over Las Vegas, Ratchet was among the Autobots assembled by Optimus Prime to invade the occupied area. While the others engaged in battle, Ratchet was tasked with dealing with the collateral damage, and leading the human residents of Las Vegas to safety. He returned to the protection of Optimus Prime and his Matrix augmented power before a nuclear strike hit the city, and lent his skills to repairing the Autobots who had given their energon to power up Prime's "Finishing Move". Annihilation

Over the next few days, Ratchet brought all the Autobots back on-line, including Bluestreak, Bumblebee and Sideswipe, who had each been drastically injured over the course of the preceding events. No sooner had Bluestreak been reactivated, though, that he was drawn back into the Keepers' control by their pawn, Franklin Townsend. Franklin's status as an "augment" — a human specially engineered using Cybertronian technology — allowed him to bypass Teletraan I's security and infiltrate the Ark. Ratchet blamed himself for allowed that loophole in the security system. Later, Ratchet diagnosed the effects of the deconstructionites—reverse-engineered nanotechnology used by the government against the Transformers to drain away their processing power. Fusion

Ratchet took part in a battle on the shores of Alaska with the Decepticons over possession of a crashed spacecraft containing Scourge. As the Autobots overwhelmed their foes, Shockwave arrived on the planet and gave them an ultimatum: surrender and return to a newly unified Cybertron, or be destroyed. While the Decepticons were overwhelmed by these new arrivals, the Autobots managed to retreat from the battleground. Returning to the Ark, Ratchet tended to the wounded, including Ironhide, who had gotten several explosive shells lodged into his backside. Grimlock rejoined their ranks, and though it caused a stir among the other soldiers, Ratchet welcomed back the Dinobot, claiming that his bravado was exactly what the Autobots needed at the moment, faced with their new powerful enemy. New World Order Optimus Prime assigned Ratchet to a Jazz-led team that was to remain on Earth while he surrendered himself to Shockwave, having been left with little other options on the matter. Brothers' Burden After Shockwave's lieutenant, Ultra Magnus, took Prime and others back to Cybertron, Ratchet and Wheeljack remained at the Ark as Jazz, Brawn, and Windcharger attempted to locate Scourge and his ship. Unfortunately, Jazz informed Ratchet that both the ship and its passenger had vanished from the battlefield in their absence. Cold War

My crotch is my stomach.

After the end of Shockwave's despotic rule over Cybertron, the Autobots on Cybertron made contact with Ratchet's crew for an update and promised to send supplies. Generation 1 #0 When Starscream and a team of Decepticons arrived on Earth, they attacked the Ark's inhabitants, wanting the starship for themselves. In the initial assault, the Autobots managed to take Soundwave, his cassettes, Thundercracker, and Skywarp prisoner, but eventually all the Autobots but Ratchet and Brawn were defeated by the mighty Bruticus. Expecting the arrival of the supply ship from Cybertron later that day, Ratchet and Brawn slipped past the Ark's defense systems, made haywire by Bruticus's assault, in order to contact the ship and warn them. Unfortunately, Bruticus caught up soon after, and they were forced to destroy the Ark rather than let the Decepticons have access to Teletraan I. Night of the Combaticons Before the battle could escalate further, it was interrupted by the arrival of Sunstorm, a Seeker seemingly powered by supernatural forces. While the Decepticons' attention shifted to this new arrival, the Orion supply ship also came on the scene, only to be downed by Sunstorm. Thankfully, most of the Decepticons were also knocked offline by the radiant super-warrior, and Sunstorm left in pursuit of Starscream. After being cheered up by Bumblebee somewhat, Ratchet set up three Powerdasher drones to repair the damages done to the Orion. They completed their task in a few hours, only for Starscream to then turn up again, now accompanied by Jetfire. Black Sunshine An uneasy truce was formed between the small group of Autobots and Decepticons, and Ratchet begrudgingly put his medic skills to work on Starscream. Using his expertise, he built a homing device that duplicated Starscream's energy signature, and an energy-siphon for his allies to attach to Sunstorm when he inevitably returned. Thanks to Jetfire's help, the Autobots managed to attach the siphon onto Sunstorm, forcing the super-clone to flee. Skyfire However, after Jetfire left the Orion to go after Sunstorm, Starscream used his null-ray on the remaining Autobots, including Ratchet, and deserted them. The Omega Effect The Autobots recovered, including several that were fixed up by the EDC to help them out in ousting an Insecticon infestation in the town of San Desto. After the completion of their mission, they were picked up by Ratchet in the Orion, who filled them in on what had happened to the rest of the Autobots in their absence. Lost and Found

G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers

Physician, arm thyself.

Two years later, a malfunction in Teletran 3 sent dozens of Transformers into various points in history, an act which, if not reversed, would result in a perpetual holocaust being unleashed across Earth. To retrieve one Transformer and bring him home, a team of Cobra and G.I. Joe agents were sent 15 years into an apocalyptic future where Shockwave and his Decepticons ruled. The remaining cyborged humans had formed a resistance which had only one Autobot warrior who stood between them and utter annihilation. The last Autobot alive, Ratchet had grown bitter and battle-hardened after years of guerrilla warfare, and he demanded the team sent to bring him back to the present day help him complete one more mission. Ratchet, the Joes, and the Cobra agents were successful in freeing a factory nearby that was manned by enslaved humans, but Ratchet refused to go home with them and abandon his calling. Barbecue returned Ratchet home against his wishes, and as Ratchet cursed the stupid little creature, the Shockwave of the present day shot Ratchet in the back, putting him out of commission. G.I. Amazingly not dead.

Years after the Decepticon and Autobot Wars had ended, Ratchet and five other Autobots were sent to Ceti Alpha Seven to destroy General Deathsaurus's Insecticon clone lab and stop his planned Decepticon uprising. After a team of four (consisting of Fallback, Chromia, Flareup, and Ricochet) failed, Ratchet and Ironhide followed to help.

Groovy.

Specifics: Modern bodies

Ratchet fought in the "Ice Age Wars" on ancient Earth, transforming into an unidentified animal with scales and spikes. As the increasingly colder climate began to threaten the Autobots and Decepticons, they powered down underground to finish their conflict at a later date, and were eventually awoken by humans in the mid-19th century. Ratchet and Prowl agreed that it was too early to awaken Optimus Prime and interfere with humanity, but they were disregarded by Bumblebee who wanted to help the humans reach their goals. Hearts of Steel #1

Upon learning from the humans that the Decepticons were also awake, Bumblebee reported this to Ratchet and Prowl, who were seemingly in charge while Prime was asleep. Now that he knew Decepticons were involved, Ratchet felt it necessary for the Autobots to do something. Hearts of Steel #2 Taking on a medical boxcar altmode, he joined the other Autobots in forming a train and pursuing the Decepticons' Astrotrain as it headed towards New York. Hearts of Steel #3 They were briefly held back when the Decepticons collapsed a tunnel entrance on them, forcing Ratchet and the others to stop and dig their comrades and human allies out of the rubble. Once the Astrotrain was stopped and the Decepticons were defeated, the Autobots went back underground to continue fighting another day. Hearts of Steel #4

In 1888, the Elder Gods began threatening Earth, causing the Autobots to resurface. Seeking the energy needed to reactivate Optimus Prime, Ratchet and several other Autobots brought inventors Tobias Muldoon and Nikola Tesla to their deep-frozen leader. Infestation 2: The Transformers #1 After sacrificing their energy to awaken Optimus Prime with Tesla's invention, Optimus Prime granted his soldiers some of his personal energon reserves. Soon, the Autobots set out to save Port Cenotaph; there, they found Ironhide, who had been infected by the Elder God. The Autobots continued to protect humanity for many years, keeping an eye out for the reappearance of Decepticons. In the 21st century Ratchet investigated a possible Decepticon signal, but it turned out to be a trap set by the human organization Skylogic Systems, who captured him. The humans extracted Ratchet's DNA and combined it with mutated human genes to engineer a deadly virus, mistakenly believing it was the key to preventing a supposed invasion of human-alien hybrids. He was eventually rescued from the Skylogic labs by Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and a trio of heroic humans known as the Lone Gunmen. The X-Files: Conspiracy: The Transformers

"Strange Visitors" establishes that events identical to those of Hearts of Steel and Infestation 2 occur in the 2005 IDW continuity; however, they happened to Maximal explorers brainwashed by Shockwave into believing they were the Autobots and Decepticons of the Great War.

Two different bios were given for Ratchet with the BotCon 2016 customising class figure. We've chosen to document the one that slots neatly into the existing Combiner Wars microcontinuity on this page, and the one that broadly aligns with the Generation 2 comic on Ratchet's Marvel Comics subpage.

Ratchet was known to be a highly skilled craftsman, capable of curing any injury or infection with the right parts and time. He often took on challenges that outstripped his capabilities, and reportedly worked for years on restoring some of his patients, though he could become melancholic if overwhelmed and often required convincing to take rest.

After being exposed to an arcane Autobot artifact, he was capable of serving as a "universal donor" to any combiner that required a replacement limb. In this form he could heal damaged comrades with just the touch of his arm-mode's hand, though this was a draining process for his host combiner and could disengage the impromptu team if overtaxed. Star Trek vs. Transformers

[edit]

Mazinger Z versus Transformers

[edit]
Does Bumblebee turn into a clown car or something?

During the war for Cybertron, Ratchet's main functions were to rescue and repair. As part of the Ground Command Engineering unit, he held the rank of Private Siege toy box/instructions and/or Specialist Siege webpage/toy packaging tray (or maybe he was a Ground Command Special Ops Sergeant[2]). After the Tagan Heights region was compromised — its high strategic value leading to it sustaining heavy damage in the war — salvage operations by the Autobots were made on its outskirts, with Ratchet taking charge. Their main objective was to search for leftover technology that could be reused. Siege Teletraan-1 Data Files[3]

After Cybertron fell, the Autobots left their homeworld aboard the Ark, traveling through space in pursuit of the AllSpark. Earthrise webpage[4] When the ship eventually ran low on fuel, required the Autobots to search nearby planets for fuel sources. Teletraan-1 detected a source of rich energy on the planet Paradron, leading Ratchet on a mission to the planet's surface. There he encountered the Paradron Medic, Lifeline, a refugee who fled to Paradron after the war broke out. Reluctant to help him secure Energon due to his ties to the war, Ratchet proved himself useful in helping injured bots, such as Hot House, impressing Lifeline with his dedication to help others as high as her own. Closer than ever to reaching the AllSpark, the Autobots awakened after crash-landing on pre-Ice Age Earth. While battling the Decepticons, both sides were joined by the Maximals and Predacons, their epic battle changing their combined destinies.

I diagnose you with dead.

However, when they arrived and sent a reconnaissance team to investigate, the Autobots found that an abandoned space station had blocked the portal; though Ratchet unsuccessfully tried to establish control over the old outpost, Wheeljack instead proposed sending an expedition to scuttle the vessel from within. Earthrise episode 3 Later, Ratchet took part in the final battle over Earth that ended with both the Ark and the Nemesis crash-landing on the primitive planet.

Some time later, Ratchet performed another autopsy on the young Rubble, the second murder victim in living memory; based on his findings, he determined that the little 'bot had been killed through blunt force trauma and reached the uncomfortable conclusion that two separate murderers were active on Cybertron. The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part One When Windblade helped uncover a Rise base under the Memorial Crater, she was heavily injured in a blast and brought to Ratchet for repairs. Windblade managed to retrieve a list of probable Rise members, and Chromia had Ratchet compare and contrast the suspects with his findings. There were too many heavyweight 'bots to narrow down Rubble's murderer, but Ratchet believed it was likely that Frenzy, with his integrated drills, could have been responsible for Brainstorm's death. An annoyed Ratchet planted a "bomb" on Knock Out and warned that he'd detonate it if the Decepticon didn't help them. After tracking Sombra's minions to an energon spring, the group launched an impromptu attack on Sombra's forces. Asking if she can do it again, he fitted a device to her head which allowed her to channel her magic and Knock Out's emotions, successfully freeing the Transformers present from Sombra's control. On Cybertron, Ratchet was friends with Arcee; on more than one occasion, the female Autobot had saved his life. Transformers #5

However, Ratchet informed him that not even the Matrix could stop the inevitable, and a remorseful Jetfire succumbed to his wounds. Transformers #1

File:TF2023 – Carly paints her van.jpg

With the raw materials in the quarry and the last of their stored energy, Ratchet used Prime's Combat Deck to revive Cliffjumper, but warned Optimus that they had no more resources to revive anyone else, and that Prime's life was too valuable to risk using the Matrix. When the Decepticons attacked a nearby power plant, Optimus told Ratchet that it was now his duty to defend Earth from the Decepticons before ordering Cliffjumper to stay behind and protect them. Transformers #2

Some time later, Ratchet was working on a dormant Wheeljack when he received a distress call from Optimus warning that Spike had been injured. The necessities of the situation required an Autobot with some firepower, and Ratchet wound up reviving Jazz instead, pooling all of their remaining energon to bring him online for a few hours. With Prime's trailer in tow, Ratchet and Jazz arrived at Farmingham Hospital in time for Jazz to force the Decepticons into a retreat. Against Ratchet's own advice, Prime used the Matrix to restore power to the hospital, saving the many patients in critical condition inside; although Prime justified his actions by claiming humans were innocent, Ratchet remained skeptical. As Jazz collapsed, Ratchet told Optimus that the Autobots had to start thinking of themselves or risk Decepticon victory—although they were running out of options, Ratchet revealed that he had salvaged Megatron's fusion cannon arm and brought it with him to serve as a replacement for the Autobot leader's missing right arm. Prime was initially hesitant, but when Spike's father Sparky suggested a solution to the Autobots' energy problem, Prime decided to take the initiative and accepted the new arm. Transformers #4

File:TF2023 no. 5 – Ratchet and Arcee Have a Moment.jpg

Sparky's idea involved jury-rigging a nearby hydroelectric dam to generate the energon the Autobots needed; to help build the turbine, Ratchet rebuilt Wheeljack's upper body, mounting him on a mechanical pedestal so that he could oversee the refit. To begin with, the Prime decided to revive Arcee; the two were happy to see one another again, but an incoming Decepticon bombardment forced Arcee to tackle Ratchet to safety. Amidst the battle, Ratchet revived Jazz while Arcee rescued Carly from certain death; the battle ended with the turbine damaged. Optimus then ordered a counteroffensive to retake the Ark. Just as they approached the starship, an explosion rocked Ratchet off his wheels, and the medic could only look on as Long Haul rammed Optimus Prime aside. In the ensuing fight, Scavenger used his excavator arm to sever Ratchet's leg before all the newly revived Constructicons formed Devastator. Transformers #5

File:TF2023 no. 6 – Door shuts on Ratchet.jpg
Now he's twinning with Wheeljack!

Pursued by Devastator, the Autobots made a run for the Ark, watching in terror as the monstours combiner gravely wounded their leader. Devastator manage to seize Ratchet's one remaining leg before the Autobot medic ordered Jazz to close the door, amputating his other leg. Despite his own dire injuries, Ratchet tried tending to Prime's wounds, but finally admitted that Prime wouldn't make it. As Prime surrendered the Matrix of Leadership, Sparky voluntarily entered the Matrix and sacrificed his own life for the cause by re-energizing the artifact, instantly restoring Prime to fighting shape. Transformers #6

Though the Autobots successfully retook the Ark and pushed the Decepticons into a retreat, Skywarp remained embedded in the Teletraan One computer system and deliberately locked the Autobots out of the computer's repair functions, requiring Wheeljack to manually repair Ratchet's legs. Transformers #7 As part of this plan, Ratchet successfully repaired Jetfire; as Ratchet later explained to his leader, there was only enough left of his spark to bring him back as an improvised troop carrier—Jetfire was now trapped in alternate mode, permanently blinded, and unable to move under his own power. Later, when renewed Decepticon activity was detected, Prime, Ratchet, Cliffjumper, and Jazz flew Jetfire to the Pacific Ocean to investigate. Transformers #8

Transformers #9

News of Ratchet's death hit Wheeljack particularly hard. Transformers #10 Sometime after, the US Coast Guard recovered Ratchet's body from the ocean and brought it to Farmingham. There, a group of friendly humans showed the corpse to Optimus, who lamented that he'd failed the medic as a leader and as a friend. Transformers #22 Some time later, a recently-reactivated Brawn and Trailbreaker observed Ratchet's fallen body. Transformers #27

After Elita Prime gained the Matrix of Leadership and took command of the Autobots, Ultra Magnus carried Ratchet's body back to Cybertron as Elita promised Optimus that she'd do whatever she could to bring them back online. Transformers #30

[edit]

Kre-O Transformers Konquest

[edit]

The Autobots' peaceful day in Kreopolis was shattered when the city was bombarded by the Decepticons, and a number of Autobots including Ratchet were shattered into their component blocks. As Ratchet's pieces rained from the sky, they were caught by Optimus Prime's Kreon, and the Autobot medic was soon reassembled. Ratchet subsequently dropped Prime off back at the battlefield so he could catch other Autobots. Kre-O Transformers Konquest

Prime Defence

[edit]

Ratchet's Kreon helped Optimus Prime defend Earth by periodically appearing on a highway to repair his shields. Prime Defence

Kreon Chaos

[edit]

Ratchet would aid his fellow Autobots in their mission to retrieve the Optimus Prime Kre-O kit parts held within the Decepticons' headquarters by fixing sabotaged computer terminals. Once repaired, Bumblebee could hack into said terminals to grant them further access into enemy territory. The Autobots eventually managed to make it into the enemy's base, and retrieved the kit parts. Ratchet then assembled the kit into a colossal Optimus Prime. Kreon Chaos

Transformers Legends

[edit]

When Megatron challenged Optimus Prime to a duel, Ratchet was one of the few Autobots left at HQ to defend it from an attack by the Constructicons. He joined Ironhide, Wheeljack, and Brawn in mounting a defense, but they were no match for the Decepticon team. Heavy Metal War - Part 1 During a Decepticon attack on a major human city, Ratchet, Inferno, and the Protectobots launched rescue operations. Unfortunately their efforts were hampered by Thundercracker and Dirge, who unleashed all manner of sonic attacks on them. To the Rescue He was among the Autobots affected by Megatron's sabotage of the Autobot recharging chamber, and on Megatron's orders attacked Rutter Military Base. He and the other Autobots were returned to normal by Sparkplug's attitude exchanger. Attack of the Autobots

Ratchet went missing, and somehow became fused to Megatron. The other Autobots located him in inter-dimensional space, where he had come under attack by a time-displaced Galvatron. The Autobots were able to rescue him, taking him back to their base where he was successfully separated from Megatron. Savage Circle

MEEEDIIIC!!!!

Never talk to Ratchet about problems, for him it's all solutions. If it's broken, he'll remake it. If it's a battlefield wound he'll patch and repair it. It's this comforting repair bay manner that puts those he treats at ease, and a deft, gentle touch with the laser scalpel doesn't hurt either. All of which belies his otherwise gruff, somewhat outspoken manner, and Ratchet's one of the few Autobots that Optimus Prime tolerates any backtalk from... mostly. Ratchet Bio

When Ratchet first arrived, Melody asked who the new guy was, and he introduced himself, while Blaster stated he definitely had his work cut out for him. He was then asked to get his repair kit ready when they came across three Decepticon bases. He advised the other Autobots not to get hit too much. Power Play Campaign

 • Class: Medic
 • Lowest Star Rating: 1 star

"HAMMER DOWN!"
Broken? I'm here to fix ya.

In battle, Ratchet wielded the "Sapphire Scalpel" buzzsaw and the "Toxic Syringe". His active skill is "Vital Linkup":

 • Vital Linkup — Ratchet tethers himself to a nearby ally, conjoining his health with his ally's. Any damage taken by said ally will also be dealt onto Ratchet. Meanwhile, the tether heals both parties at a rate of 80 HP per second. Transformers Online [6]

Transformers: Forged to Fight

[edit]
Ratchet's advice: "Pop it, Don't drop it."

Ratchet was one of the Autobots pulled from his universe by the Quintessons and forced to fight. He eventually joins the Commander. There are at least a few of him running around! As a Tech bot, He Shocks enemies with his blasters, and performs Self-Diagnostics to repair himself when low on health, and sometimes automatically when hit with a single strong attack. Transformers: Forged to Fight

Ratchet eventually joined the Quintesson ranks, saying that their technology was much more advanced than their own "primitive" technology. He had some sense knocked into him by the Commander. He spent much of the rest of his time repairing others.

He developed a "mind device" that was stolen by Grimlock.

Notes

[edit]
So Ratchet basically avoided becoming part of the Girls Gone Wild cast. Good on her. Er, him.
Bork bork bork - wait, no, that's Sweden...
 • Bob Budiansky has said that he named Ratchet after the less-friendly medic Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
 • Ratchet never really showed his party animal spirit in Marvel, outside of the start of "Warrior School". Budiansky gives two answers for why: "1) in the comic book stories, he always found himself in situations too serious to allow his party personality to emerge. 2) I screwed up and forgot I had written that as part of his profile. I prefer to go with answer number 1."[7]
 • In the Shout! While this obviously was not the final direction the character took, it is an odd coincidence... and a fact that makes the early nicknames "Cool Hand Lube" and "Greasefinger" even more embarrassing.[8]
 • In a different gender-related coincidence, the French Diaclone release of Ratchet, "Ambulance", was referred to as female in one of Joustra's pack-in minicomics.
 • The colors of Ratchet's helmet differ depending on the medium... and sometimes within the same medium: The original Sunbow cartoon gave him a white helmet with a black crest, whereas the Marvel comic gave him a red helmet with a white crest. The BotCon 2005 exclusive figure was the first Ratchet toy with an actual head, and it followed the cartoon coloring for the helmet (although the crest ended up silver rather than black). (The BotCon 2016 customization class figure offered all three versions as part of different possible Ratchet decos.) The Dreamwave continuity featured the "Marvel" colors for the helmet for stories set in the distant past (such as the War Within titles), while stories set in the then-present day depicted the helmet in "cartoon" colors.
 • Speaking of colors: The Hall of Fame banner that was outside the Pasadena Civic Auditorium during BotCon 2011 depicted Ratchet with inverted shoulder colors. While ostensibly done to avoid the legal wrath of the Red Cross organization, it suggests that Ratchet has suddenly become Christian and/or decided to align himself with Switzerland.
 • While Ratchet has a toy-accurate head design in the War for Cybertron Trilogy cartoon, the rest of his body is just a redressing of Ironhide's model, as evident by the lack of the remolded details that the toy received.
